    I'm glad that you are one of the few UA-cam "hosts" that actually wears a microphone on his lapel when speaking. It makes your audio sound so much better than the hosts who sound like they are in an echo chamber across the room. Good job, man!

    Props for being one of the FEW who ever mention the importance of a BLACK ROOM... I've often told people the same thing you said... "projectors can't project BLACK... so the light on the screen is the darkest your black areas of the projected image will ever be". Good job mate! Now if I can just find me one of each for my collection... like you, I love the tech, regardless of the usability!

    Interesting note about these (and closely related products)...if you can put up with a bit of roughness on the projected "screen", it is relatively common to find outdoor places at night that have big, relatively white concrete walls. Connecting one of these to a portable emulation device (such as a Raspberry-Pi machine or the like) to play old-school games with random passersby is a lot of fun. My personal recommended games for such an occasion are NES Contra, ARC Bubble Bobble, ARC Rainbow Islands, MD/Genesis Dashin' Desperadoes, Neo Geo Crossed Swords, or SNES Mario Kart.

    Thanks for the great review. To me this falls into the type of tech that makes you think "wow, cool" when you first hear about it but considering it a bit more and reality bites, especially at that price. Kind of makes me think of the slide projector my dad had in the 70s and 80s when they were still a thing; good fun but such a faff getting it set up with the projector screen that you rarely bothered.

    I got hooked to your channel with all those obscure formats and I haven't looked back since. I never realized how many truly existed before the digital age! Your show has a lot more personality to it than a lot of tech reviews. I don't even normally watch tech reviews until I found this channel. So awesome, informative and it never feels "fake" like some of the companies that obviously get paid a lot to bias the opinion on the products from the manufacturers. Nothing wrong with that either but it is refreshing to get a more neutral opinion. Keep it up! I'm always excited to see something new or old and obscure!

    Thanks for pointing the lumens thing out, Tech.
    For comparison, your average 60-watt equivalent CFL bulb produces 650 to 800 lumens, depending on whether it's warm or cool in colour. Your laptop and phone are usually about 400.
    This projector only has 40 lumens. For more perspective, my six LED flashlight that runs off of a single AA battery is rated at 35, and can barely project more than ten feet in front of me.
    This thing is really, REALLY weak.

    • @VulpesHilarianus
      @VulpesHilarianus 7 років тому +4

      The biggest problem can also be seen in that same clip. That being that ambient light, even in a very dark room, can wash out the picture. Not ruin the view, but enough to upset the brightness.

    • @mikecd6489
      @mikecd6489 5 років тому

      @@VulpesHilarianus I have one, it outperforms some bigger and more expensive home cinema projectors in terms of image quality. Unlike a TV, once you reach HD, it really doesn't matter about if it's 720, 1080 etc. It's down to viewing distance. The auto laser focus is superb. You need total darkness, but that's about the only issue. Excellent pico projector and more than capable home cinema option when used with a good quality projector screen.

    I wish more reviewers would do this - wait until technology has been out for a while. Then, when all the kinks have been ironed out and the price has sunk to a reasonable level, a review just makes more sense to me. Love the vintage reviews, too. And your English, it's awesome.

    I think the "whine" you mentioned may have been the fan motor. And all projectors will have some sort of fan noise. The full-sized ones are considerably louder. When you mentioned it and left the hole for us to hear it, I had crank up my volume to hear it at all so it's not that bad, although it could be worse, is suppose, live in the same room. Interesting review; quite helpful even though it's dated. Your supplementary information about the new version makes the difference there.

    • @corn322
      @corn322 7 років тому

      The noise was probably the circuitry regulating power to the lasers. I doubt it has forced air cooling. What little heat the laser diodes make will dissipate into the casing.

    A feature of the new one you overlooked: The vastly improved laser light (spec): from 2000 hours to 10000 hours.
    Due to 1920 pixels in horizontal direction: can this projector be sused for structured light 3D scanning? The low resolution of 720 pixels does not matter there.

      yeah price to performance for these just isn't there yet. Just gonna wait for 1440p 120hz regular projectors so i can play games with low lag (less than tv anyway) at a potentially huge screen size. Pretty much all of the 120hz projectors are 1080p or lower, which just doesnt cut it at larger viewing sizes. Plus, they cost upwards of 3x that of a 60hz for the same res.

    • @jasonkiminseoul
      @jasonkiminseoul 7 років тому +2

      You really made a good choice. I got one of this and it was horrible. I travel a lot so I thought hey this could be like a portable TV that I can bring around. I was wrong, very wrong.
      First of all, it's not bright. It's much darker than typical DLP/LED projectors, so if you want it to project more than 32", you would be out of luck most of the time.
      So, let's say, in order to avoid this, you make it project about 32" and sit close to the screen. You will start noticing small artifacts all over the screen. This is a common problem among laser projectors.
      So, in the end, I ended up with a product that only works when a really specific condition is met. I just watched videos and played games on my laptop instead.

    How is Sony doing financially? I ask because it seems they have there hands in many areas and when I look at other companies in the past that are extremely diverse in many products they eventually go under. So how is Sony? Thank you in advance.

    • @Sabundy

      Bo88y Beretta I assume SONY is doing quite well as they have posted record profits for 2017. Sonys shares are also doing very well and climbing. Thus they seem to be doing well. They did get out of manufacturing certain products such as laptops.....so they are not so over diversified anymore.

    • @Sabundy
      @Sabundy 6 років тому +4

      Ano Niem Nope. Not remotely true. You should do some homework. Sony posted record profits this year. No way they could do that with only their gaming. The Playstation and gaming is actually their second most profitable. First are semi conducters and image sensors which are the best in the world and are used in almost every other smart phone manufacturer and Tvs and their image sensors are what makes the facial recognition on the iPhone X work. Also, SONY is waaay ahead of everyone in VR having now sold over 2 million VR headsets (far more than anyone else) and they pretty much made a comeback with their TV sales, among other ways they made money (such as their audio division) In fact.... Their mobile division was the only one that underperformed. So your statement is completely wrong

      Allan Lamb yeah... Despite that they aren't more widely used, Xperias are very well built. Cameras: Sony quality, with a very good software (except for the panorama function. Is difficult to get a good shot with that) that covers a wide range of situations
      Sound: typical Sony (although they renamed the music player app from "Walkman" to just "music". This suggests that Sony plans to kill Walkman as a brand) with clarity that you expect from a such company.
      Also Sony has a very good selection of additional software around image, and sound.

    11:01 I can find one; there's a nice blank square of not-quite-white wall in my bedroom, of which the only thing blocking it is my bed.
    If I were to move around my desk, set of drawers and my bed, I could conceivably use it as a projector screen.

    I love these and have one as part of my Motorola Moto Z Play and use it WAY more often than I thought I would. I use it mostly for mobile gaming on the ceiling, but it's great to take out at get togethers, I've used it in class, I use it to project the chat to my UA-cam live streams on the wall so I can talk to viewers. it's pretty unnecessary, but still pretty cool.

    I just watched the very first seconds of you going on about not being the first. Yes, you ARE! With thorough research, not the usual 10:10 length videos because youtube money, decent amount of background knowledge and great humor. I've been following you for years on youtube and when you went more from just showing off tech to a more tech-knowledge-biweekly show format with alternating segments of you addressing the viewer and hands-on parts combined with on-screen text from old news magazines this channel became so much more valuable and gained a tremendous amount of professional tech-journalism

    Hi Mr. Techmoan! I really like the vintage equipment reviews you do. I'm not familiar with your audio recording setup, but I have a suggestion. When I make videos, I move the lapel mic closer to my mouth (maybe on your shirt collar), and I turn the gain down. This reduces the echoes that the mic picks up. When we see shots of you in front of the projector screen, we can hear the reflection of the room. It's subtle, but it's there. I do keep my mic upside down too, though! Helps with sibilant Ss and Fs. Thanks for everything you do.

    A thing like this is useful for beach parties, camping, glamping on a budget, mobile DJs/VJs who also want the focus-free feature for projection mapping, sci-FI & gaming conventions, for playing video/console /PC games, for use with your R.P.G. to display maps or other features by the game master. There are lots of cool uses.My walls are all smooth and white.

    Ok so this is unrelated to this video in particular however one thing I've noticed in your videos is that, as far as I know, the display for the Akai EA-A7 isn't set up right. I think the bars on the right and left of each channel should peak in the middle of the display, there's even a visible lime halfway in the middle. Try it out, I bought one of these after seeing your video on it and doing this has given me the best results. Love the videos keep doing what you're doin.

    All my wealthiest friends showed movies on a 16mm film projector back in early 70's. Like steam trains, projectors have an enduring appeal that transcends the sheer practicality of the massively big-screen OLED TVs of today.

  • @kurtwolfe6639

    I have one and have found it especially fun for the grandkids to watch a movie on a whole wall and also while hunting or camping it projects across a whole bed sheet very clearly. While visiting in a hospital I have been able to show pics and movies of friends and family on the ceiling for those laid up in bed. A very fair review. I connect a U megaboom for sound when 'planning' any showing. I have a portable battery to carry with me for phone or projector if I need more power.

    "It's a solution looking for a problem" - that about hits the nail on the head.
    I had thought about picking up one of those projectors at one point but then decided against it for precisely the reason laid out in the video: you'll rarely ever find something to project video on.
    My use case would also have been business trips. I wanted this as a sort of fallback in case the place I went to for giving a presentation does not have a projector. It has happened a couple of times and in the end we had to get one of the bigger screens from a computer and huddle around it rather awkwardly.
    Conference rooms or offices are pretty much like hotel rooms (and when I say that I don't mean in the sens of "I only go there to sleep"). Everywhere you look there's stuff in the way. This is true almost everywhere in the world, btw. Also, you often don't get the room dark enough and rearranging the whole place just for a one hour presentation does not make sense. And even IF you could find a section of wall that is not cluttered with pictures, paintings, mirrors, windows or doors, it will probably be too small to be of any use.
    So on the off-chance that no projector is available where I go, I just try to make do with what I have. Anything else is not worth the hassle.
    Still - I find the devices strangely intriguing, even though they are of no use whatsoever (at least to me - your mileage may vary).

    I brought one of these with me on a deployment -- Would use a sheet on the end of my bed (bunk bed) and hung it above my head. Worked great. Downside was the battery life (the original company that made these didn't put a large battery in them) and the brightness was terrible.. but it was quick and easy to use.. no focusing.. simple.

    I love the fact that you put the camera's microphone next to the projector's speaker. I don't know if irony is the right word, but that's got to be something, given that you could say a camera is the opposite of a projector, and a microphone the opposite of a speaker.

    I would think that the big audience for pico projectors is for business travelers who may need to make a presentation at a customer's location only to find that there isn't a projector or TV to hook up to, being able to bring your own without carrying something super heavy is a huge benefit.

  • @christophermcmichael880

    Maybe not for everyone, but i think it would be pretty cool to use that projector for a small home theater. Hook a blu ray player to a surround sound reciever then from the receiver to the little projector and you have a sort of discreet movie projector. Even though it only displays 720p but still cheaper than a 2,000 on up dollar projector. And takes up a lot less space as well.

    Excellent review! I am happy that you included the differences between the Cl1 and the Cl1a. I wish the Cl1a was 1080 resolution, but a full size hdmi port is nice. As for the price.... I agree with you. It appears that the Cl1a is a solution looking for a problem which might explain why in December 2018 the thing is still $399.99. Sigh.... I wanted the Sony A8f oled tv, but it is refusing to drop in price for me to justify it. I do like the idea of the pico and thanks for sharing that there is a tripod adapter. That is actually a pretty good idea. Although it would have been nice if that was an included accessory. And the bluetooth speaker idea is cool as well.... If it was $299.99, I would like pull the trigger and get this thing just to have a cool toy, but still at $399.99 and then after warranty and tax, I still can not justify it. In either case.... Thanks for sharing your experience.... Really coool video!!!!!

    Some years ago I remember reading an article on laser projection. It mentioned a special crystal whose refractive index could be changed by exposing it to a magnetic field. The idea being that the laser is routed through such a crystal and two small coils mounted close to the crystal are used to create variable magnetic fields that change the direction of the laser as it exits the crystal. After watching this I started searching for the article again but I couldn't find it, nor can I find any mention of the principle anywhere. Maybe it failed? Seems odd that all trace of it has vanished.

    The best use I can figure for these pocket projectors is business meetings/conferences etc. Although most conference rooms have projectors in them already so the use would still be minimal.
    I got a MicroVision projector a few years back in some boxes of random old tech a relative was throwing out, got a carry bag and a proprietary cable with it (think back to the charging cables for mobile phones from the mid 1990s and it looks similar to that).
    It also has some other ports, (HDMI mini, USB micro, 1/8" audio jack). Manufacture date says Aug 2011.
