Agreed, often if I'm unhappy with the painting, the white highlights stage really helps form details and transform the piece into something I like. This was a great way to break down a tutorial for beginners. Lovely work, the dog turned out so preciously cute :)
Splatter effects are a lovely touch to the piece. They remind the viewer that the medium of water color is not easily controlled and the contrast with the colored shapes is visually harmonious.
I have never used gouache with my watercolors. I will try it. I will also use some of my metallics. I’ve only used those with fish and frogs. Great suggestions!

Hey Lioba. I tried to make a painting from a white dog. Although I did learn a lot from this great tutorial , i found it hard to select colors.. can you give some advice? I choose just like you did for a color like burnt Siena with sparkle, also paine.s grey, some yellow tones.. So far it doesnt look that bad. But i think i can do better...
Hi one of the watercolour paper pads you recommended was arches hot pressed but in the video you showed cold pressed ,, which do you recommend for painting pet portraits , cold or hot? There’s so much and I’m trying to find what will work best . Thank you love the video

I'm happy with all of my paintings, which doesn't necessarily means I like them all, Id rather say I'm never 100% happy with what I did, there's always something I would change, but that's what i like about it, every next painting is better, and hopefully one day I will get to a point where I'm happy with my art! Do you always have to use watercolor paints on watercolor paper?? I tried using them on a canvas and the colors didn’t blend nearly as well as this :(
You can't use regular canvas because it isn't absorbent enough for watercolors. The colors tend to lift off instead of saturate the paper. I think I've seen canvases made for watercolors but not sure how good those are because I've never used them. Hope this helps you.
You can buy a watercolour ground medium to prepare canvases for watercolour, but it is a little less forgiving than paper and it's important to be precise and plan out the painting.

It’s not good to trace on top of your laptop screen, you can give it even micro scratches which can really do a number on the screen after time.
If you ABSOLUTELY cannot get a lightbox, a bright windowsill does ok
