- I am not very good at using my knife to get the fine shavings sometimes needed to get a fire going, so is there an alternative, _ yes, it weighs nothing, takes up no room, but is almost magical, and so easy,.
A pencil sharpener!
Brilliant!
Well done brother.
Excellent idea, I did just the same with the same Staedtler pencil sharpener! Besides, it’s multifunctional, since you can always use it for the intended purpose… Good work!
Good info Dave. I have a nice little M&R brass barrel type sharpener myself which works great.
Agree with you 100% Dave! A firm MUST HAVE for any fire kit! I learned about that when I was in Boy Scouts 60 years ago, and it is still a valid method today! That 2-hole sharpener is the one to get, as one can use both. I have commented this on countless fire-kit videos where the reviewer doesn't seem to have heard about this! Weird!
To make feathersticks that fine, one would need to be extremely skilled and have an exceptional knife for it. One could even take along a few soft wood dowels of the correct diameter, just for real emergencies.
I do, however, agree with kaostribe below that I'd not use my cutting edge to get sparks like that. Fortunately my Cold Steel Trail Master has a very sharp spine, as do the Victorinox Hercules and Silky saw backs. All these will strike sparks just as well as a blade edge.
Cheers mate!
Thank you very much for the comment.
Mine has a smileyface on it :-)
For cough, morale.
Is it advisible to use the sharp of the knife to use as a ferro rod striker?
It's up to you really, however I have never damaged my blade and if you NEED to get a fire going, quickly, don't mess about, get the best sparks you can. You can always re- sharpen your blade later.
never use your edge to strike your ferro rod, bad form. The ferro rod can destroy the hardness/temper (they burn at up to 3000°c) of the edge.
