  • Pregnancy toxemia has struck my sheep again. And its hitting hard, and fast.
I saw a ewe sort of wobbly on her legs two days ago, and worse yesterday. So we brought her and a couple others slow to get up to a sick pen to test their ketone levels.
Sure enough, our one little mama has full blown clinical pregnancy toxemia.
Question is... am I too late treating her?
The very next day, we got struck again... only this time with a ewe lamb!
Caught this one early, I think... so hoping her chance of recovery is high!

This is just me. Don't take anything I say to heart. If it was me, after giving all the meds for pregtox I would just add giving a few syringes of water cuz they can go without food for awhile but avoid dehydration. I remembered you saying how the urine smelled. I love your whole operation and amazed how far you have come from beginning farming sheep to now. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Hi Sandy my uncle breeds goats and sheep and I asked him and he said that he would be shocked if it is not linked with mom he has found in his lifetime (my grandfather raised sheep only) that mothers who have preg tox usually will have daughters who do as well. AND he is wondering the same as you about being open and a possible coalition. He keeps rat hoarder notes as he calls them, meaning he notes ANYTHING and everything about his ewes and does, so he is gonna go back through his notes and see if he can find anything that would tie in and if he does he saod he would gladly share what he finds if positive with you. As for the feed, he said you feed the same length and 'strength' of rations and that you are SPOT on in his book for what they need verses not. He said don't second guess yourself, you know more then you are giving yourself credit for. If you think it is this then you are 9 times put of 10 right. After all the ewes you thought had preg tox were in fact afflicted so trust yourself queen you have it and are such an inspiration to all of us here at Wandering Tales Family Farm. If it is somehow genetically passed on through mom, I would strongly consider selling and not breeding ewes from moms with previously known pregnancy toxemia. I guess this is where thorough record keeping comes in. I suppose you might save yourself a lot of heartache if you didn’t breed them again. Nature is difficult to understand, yet here we are trying to make sense of it as farmers.

She is having the same symptoms as your "downed" ewe, so we called the vet immediately, and she agrees that momma is in the early stages of pregtox and our ewe is now being treated. Fingers crossed that all will go well. Your videos are another tool we use on our farm. Thank you!!!!

Hi Sandi, I have farmed most of my life (Michigan) and can tell you that inclement weather is also suspect in producing preg-tox in does. This winter started out slow, but we have had wave after wave of heavy snowstorms and are seeing increased numbers of preg -tox as compared to past kidding seasons without the roller coaster ride of severe weather events. I have found great success in saving my animals with high carb feed (1# of corn each) for the last 6 weeks of pregnancy, oral glycol 200 ml 4 times a day and 3-4 liters of electrolyte solution to stave off dehydration. You are doing great, never beat yourself up for giving 110%, you run one of the cleanest, most caring and empathetic farms around, trust me there is one that I will not even tend to anymore as they have a lot of sheep, they never are sheared, they drop their kids in frozen, muddy fields and the adults all have huge bald patches due to lice infestations.

We also try to make them walk a long way for water to keep them exercising but again that is not really an option for you in enclosed spaces. All I know is fat lazy cows have trouble calving haha. Also is mama going to end up being shipped during the next culling or will she get another chance since she missed 2 (though one was expected since she was so young), now has pregtox and her babies if they survive will most likely end up being bottle babies. One of the best elements of your videos is authenticity. Obviously you are selective about what you show and share, but there is “truth” in your daily interactions with these animals, with your hard working and capable Carissa, and with your family. I think that I am coming to understand that life is relentlessly exhausting and challenging for farmers, with moments of fulfillment and reward thrown in occasionally as well. I sincerely thank you for keeping it real for your followers. It’s a brave choice and I admire you greatly for that. ❤

Wow! You are a super woman. I am so incredibly impressed by you. I love your channel and all of the data you share as well as all of your compassion for your sheep. You are way too hard on yourself. He's little but mighty too. He goes to a sensory session but can only attend during an older kids session because of his sisters tricks classes. So he runs all over and plays with these much bigger kids. And look like that little face lamb with all the other bigger ones. It's just so cute.

Re: Preg Tox - As I understand it, basically the ewe needs more energy from her food so she doesn't get preg tox (hence why you're giving them glucose to treat them to get them the energy). Would a high energy food slurry or something like that work out in a similar way? Like, not just giving them the glucose straight but something like molasses mixed with hay and corn to get their whole stomaches working again?
To everyone reading this: Please consult your vet. I'm not a professional, I'm just curious and have no one else to ask.

I feel for you Sandi. I have a flock of laying hens going down. We had a second hen die last night. My protocol is 2 unexplained deaths equals necropsy so I took the hen (already disposed of the first) and dropped her off for a necropsy with our state vet lab this morning. The initial exam showed intestinal eneritis, likely from a clostridial disease. More testing is pending and hopefully we will have results soon. The heartbreaking part is that my favorite hen is now acting like she doesn't feel good. I'm throwing everything and the kitchen sink at that flock and hoping the results come back soon and treatable 🤞 Most folks wouldn't understand and say "it's just a hen". The vegan activists say we only care because it's our profits at stake because we only see our livestock as a paycheck. Anyone who has actually worked on a farm or with livestock knows that farmers DO care deeply for our stock. Up round the clock, in tears, trying desperately to save the ill/injured ones. I thank you for being brave enough to share your experience with the world. Hopefully more people will see that farmers aren't just soul-less robots. You really do good by your sheep and as a fellow farmer, I love your channel
