At 1:53 >> You can put some hot glue on the wires before covering them with the tape to be completely sure that you avoided the short circuit ...
In my case you can see at 1:41 that the wires weren't so close so I covered them directly with the tape .

Im trying to make an emergency hand crank phone charger from a microwave motor connected to a standard USB cable. I would think I just need the positive and negative wires inside. (The red and black) but what is the process to deal with the green and white? I tried to just twist the green and white together and crank but that didn't show a charge. I can turn on a LED lamp with the motor so I know it works. Do I need to actually remove them from the end that plugs into the phone? I know very little about electrical but I am really wanting to learn.

i made a USB OTG cable by shorting pin 4 to pin 5 just like you did, i connected a wireless mouse successfully ...
out of curiosity i used the multimeter to check the voltage on the OTG cable and my phone just went dead !!!
