i would go ahead and say m. ward is my favorite current songwritter. He has been for at least the last 5 or 6 years. I listen to a lot of music, but i always come back to him. Jim is amazing too, but for me he doesnt hit the spot like matt. I'll resort to violence to defend him. So...bring it on haters!!! you wanna meet somewhere??!
the thing about M. Ward is that he uses the guitar to make the most beautiful music. he may not be as technically as impressive as, say, joe satriani, but the actual music being made is so much better than most virtuosos' boring shred-heavy instrumental records.
Exactly. There are a lot of "honest" musicians out there. They just aren't as easily accessible as a Metallica or a Green Day. Matt is pretty well known though, so obviously a lot of people care for professional musicians rather than commercial ones that simply are selling a product. :)
Revolutionary gets thrown around a lot. I wouldn't say he's revolutionary. He definitely has distinguished himself though. Honestly, I don't think Hendrix was that impressve technically, but he rather changed how the guitar was played. M. Ward's fingerpicking isn't necessarily extravagant either, he just uses a different style. I've been playing a lot of M.Ward lately and its more that he gets a different tone with D6/9 tuning, which he adopted from Fahey. I just love the way it sounds.
for Matt's guitar, it looks like the size of a D-45 but I can't make out the name on the head. I mean it could be customs, but then I highly doubt he would play something like that... Gibson? Gretsch? I really don't know.
You're kidding right? Have you ever played a live show? You don't want to sit there using harmonics to get the tuning just right. It's much faster to use a tuner. That's hardly something to criticize. I think it shows confidence that he can stop and move back into it. I guarantee by the end nobody was thinking about such a minor incident. The strings were probably new and weren't stretched out enough.
M. Ward has no thumbs and two extra fingers, I have normal fingers and screwed up joints in my thumbs, somehow though I don't get that hateful jealousy and just want to hear more of the man. That version of Chinese Translation was moving for a moment.
cop out.heaps of guitar players tune by ear live, not to mention hes playing in an environment where it would be quick and easy to tune by ear, but whatever - you think hes some revolutionary guitar wizard so you've obviously got no idea. also he doesnt kill the signal - and furthermore no self-respecting guitar player (including myself) would kill the signal and tune their guitar blind relying on a machine. and to provide an example for all of these points - ladies and gentlemen Mr Jimi Hendrix
How has the world not imploded from the sheer concentration of awesome? i'm almost scared to listen

Great video, its like being there again...by far the best SXSW show!
damn, he so smooth!
Which one m ward? Or james?
@kincaidj1 Jim James' song at the end is called Bermuda Highway and it's off My Morning Jacket's album At Dawn.
you're like a roller coaster - you give me heavy metal dreams
class!
Roller Coaster...so smooth...;)
The last song Jim sings is called Bermuda Highway, it's from the second MMJ album, "At Dawn".
@LennyWeen M. Ward is playing a Gibson Southern Jumbo. It's the rich man's version of a J-45
1 person blacked out in pleasure and hit their head on the mouse, inconveniently hovering over the dislike button
A musical experience is always (subjectively) honest. M ward is just speaking to a lot of people and they're all agreeing.
Can they make a duets ep!!
SUCH AN ORIGINAL THOUGHT! NO ONE HAS EVER SAID SOMETHING LIKE THAT BEFORE. WOW YOU SURE ARE INSIGHTFUL!

black & white footage

All of his acoustic guitars are" draughtnoght "design, and Gibsons. they have the "big" tones that you hear in his music.

Any ideas where this video came from? It seems like a pretty professional taping. Was there a DVD made of this show?
IR TEX Aproves
wow this chinese translation is such a lovely version, its not all lofi and shit like on letterman.
you're right 1:15 soo cutie !
Can anyone post a tablature of this song? None of the ones available are right. He's clearly playing in D-droped but I can't figure out the chords.
the first one is roller coaster and the second one is chinese translation
can someone give the name of the jim james cut at the end plz? thx, hope everyone's having a nice weekend. unfuckingreal.
@deadheadfan71 It's the lack of a guitar pick that makes it possible.

Anybody know this song?
not to mention he doesnt even tune his guitar by ear, he looks down at a tuner (right?)
Pooch!

Yeah! Totally!! Hendrix was soooo much sloppier!

Lol capo @ 6:03 then capo @ 6:08
one more thing RE1206 - Robert Johnson was playing way better and more complicated 'finger picking' guitar 70-odd years ago :)
sorry bud but he's just fingerpicking.
