I recently went abroad to play poker for a week, my first real foray into live poker. Compared to the online competition the players were so terrible I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing, but I wasn't running over them as hard as I thought I should. I remember sitting down on my bed the second day asking myself what I needed to do, and came up with basically your exact list. Wait for good hand, 3- bet it, hope to hit, rinse, repeat. I absolutely cracked up listening to you say it in almost the same voice I used in my head when I realized what I was doing wrong.
Yeah, it's boring as hell, but it works. I started getting accusations of ''this guy is so lucky, he always has it''. Yeah, I do always have it, that's what I'm doing, it's not luck. I'm just playing pure value nothing else, no light 3-bets, no balance, just have a hand, bet, and hope they made some bullshit like second pair to call it down with.

Yeah you're exactly right. How are you supposed to play your range and your opponent's range and use your frequencies when they don't understand what rangers are? You can have AQs, raise under the gun and go heads up against the small blind. flop comes KJ5. Small blind makes a pair of 5s and starts betting not even understanding that this flop is much better for you. You can't raise or semi bluff because he's just simply not afraid of the board nor your range. Lol

This was so helpful. I've had to start playing like this against my friends on poker night as I play quite a bit more than they do, and I also watch lots of videos trying to better my game. It was mildly disheartening to hear my exact thoughts confirmed, as I was hoping to find a little more room for creativity, but I'm sure over time they'll get better, and the game will become more like chess and less like checkers between us.

Problem is people don’t have that much respect for fake games. Another thing I’ve learned in tournaments is that people will play wide when they’re not hitting anything. They’ll play 10 hands and by about the eighth fold they systematically get wider and wider because your blinds are going up and you don’t have enough chips to sit around and wait.
I always wait you do have to play a little loose early on . But once the cut off is done and no more rebuys that’s when you can implement poker strategy

Hi Alec...I really enjoyed this video. I play in a weekly game at my community clubhouse. I find that this exact advice is what I needed. I would say that I am by far the best player of the 15 or so people...in recent weeks, I have really taken my education the the next level. However, I haven't won the game in a month...even though I know my plays/range/bets were solid. I feel like I wasn't straying from my range.
    Literally:
You'll lose on the River bc people think K/3o is a good hand.
Everyone limps in with anything...but you have to bet 4-6BB to isolate a hand.
Hard to represent anything anything beyond an obvious over card pair.
I just need to get back to the basics, and I bet I cash next week. This is the first of your videos I've watched. Looking forward to checking out more. The link above to your hand reading PDF doesn't appear to work. Could you send a new link please?

i played the game against 7 guys, where half of them did not know the rules of poker well. the other half rised whatever two hands. there were no flops 1vs1 - almost every time, at least 4-5 ppl involved in flop. and if they found something interesting on flop, they call to river.. for example: flop: AK4 rainbow... the guy with T4o calls to the end against few opponents who bet/rise preflop. I played tight against them and end up with the same money I came with (luckily)... anyway it was from my perspective like playing against 7 guys. they simply moved chips between them all the time, if something went wrong they buy in... even with AA you are always behind against 5-6 opponents since they dont fold... its like 10-12 cards against your two - each time. it wasnt a fun and I could not call this a poker game ;-)

With the big hands did you make the pre-flop raise bigger. Like if it is a 1-2 game instead of making it 10 make it 27. If there are that many callers each time. Gotta make them pay/ thin the field.

I used to crush live games vs weak competition. But normally those tables had 2-3 crazy loose players and few ok players.
Now lately i am playing vs 6-7 super crazy and super loose players, and even when i 3 bet big they all call and impossible to know where you are vs 7 callers everytime you raise. And if i go all in they will fold , and we play super deep stack.
I still win regularly but having much more problem vs this group. We are playing 5/5 but almost every one have 200/300+ deep stacks.
Anyideas what should i do and how to approach this kinda table, i start to play more small ball then i like but it kinda helps me to control pots. And they pay me if i caj make my hand, however i was expecting to win much more with this table as they were all loose maniacs.

But .if you mostly play with only very good hands. And play them well !!
Well you should have above average wins
It's when you ,go off track. Then you start losing .
I'm an ok poker player and I have won a few small poker tournaments around 80,/ 100 people.
    But ...
    I remember when
Fidor holtz. Came about 3 Rd on the final table.and he was asked how he felt about that.he said
I played the best way I could,so I'm not disappointed..
That about sums it all up .

Years ago, I used to see pretty much nothing but calling stations in micro stakes games online. Now it seems like most people play tight before the flop. I used to make money by playing tight before the flop and aggressive if I hit a hand on the flop. This doesn't seem to work anymore because my stack drains away from posting blinds for a couple hours without seeing much action and from people folding when I make a hand.

Because the people playing poker for money these days are much better poker players on just about every level. There is a reason all the poker "pros" are selling books and coaching these days. Go to a card room and play lower stakes, it can be hit or miss. Some games won't even beat the rake with a decent win rate.

I completely agree with you. It’s harder to put lose aggressive players on ranges, but they easier to play against. Don’t bluff, don’t C-bet, don’t represent hands. just play level 1. You’re almost getting pot odds and implied odds with them. So I get in pots with them often. Pretty much what he said. J,10 suited, Q,J, K,Q. Raised or 3 bet with A,A, K,K, A,K. Raise or call raise with QQ> , If late potion call with suited connectors. get in the pot when it’s cheap or when more then half the players are in the pot. You’ll go in a small downswing, but again with so many players are in the hand, you’re getting the much better pot odds and implied odds. When you have the winning hand, bet it get the max value. You’ll almost get the worse hand to call over 80 percent of the time. Ever since I have done that, I have way more of a winning session.

Both cards have to interact with each other somehow that makes sense. Very basic and easy basics that will get you on your way to losing less.

How do you play against amateur players that place large bets in the dark (before they see their cards), raise constantly, and never folds no matter how bad their hand is. I’m an amateur to by the way.

You camp at that table until you have all the chips. It may take a while, but it's inevitable. Problem is that most players from the online poker scene don't understand that the game pace is much slower in the real world and it can take hours (5-6 sometimes) to catch enough hands to make decent money. Looking for places to double up is the key.

So I consider myself a pretty decent poker player, and I have been playing cash games with a group of friends everyday for last few weeks and normally I end up with a pretty nice stack. Last few days though I have been playing against the luckiest players ever, ex: I have AK in big blind, limps around I 3 bet and get one caller, flop comes K36 two spades, (I don't have a spade) I bet, get raised and shove, they call with a Qs and off suit 6, I have them crushed on flop, but I already knew what was gonna happen, I announced to the table that he was going to runner, runner a flush and I was gonna leave. He did it

If "good" players cant figure out how to play loose amatuers, they are not good players. First. Dont be afraid of variance. Loose players increase table variance, and sometimes they go on heaters. Second, look for exploitable patterns in post flop play whether in a hand against them or not.

I guess there was no reason for that. I think that most of ppl started following you because of your personal brand as Alec Torelli, well known poker player. I think that's way more appealing business/viewer proposition than some anonymous Conscious poker, which could be created by any random Joe. Honestly even the word "conscious" is not that appealing for the UA-cam viewer. As a designer who did also some branding I suppose that your idea didn't come from nowhere and you ve done some analysis or hired professional before making this change. But for me it doesn't really work and I thought I could be somewhere in your core target group as a winning live cash game player.
Anyway good luck and send me a message if you want to discuss more. I m quite a nerd into content strategy :D

I agree. I don't like the new channel name. Initially I wondered if it was even your channel or some random guy re-uploading your old videos. Secondly, the name 'ConsciousPoker' doesn't sound good to me. It is very passive and does not justify the brand in Poker that you bring in.

Pros play pros because they don't have a read on upcoming amateurs that still play 10k hands a month or more. I would love to run into you at the 300k gauranteed at the Beau in Biloxi. May change your mind about amateurs. I will be there. So will the top 5 of our poker league. Those 5 play the WSOP yearly as well as this same event and have cashed. 1 player took 7th at 300k gauranteed and took home 35k bucks. Not bad for an amateur.
Little did the pros know that they were up against a skilled player . There were many "pros" there. I use the term loosely. Anyone who profits in their local 1/2 cash game daily at the casinos consider themselves pro . Insert belly laugh.
Your advice against extreme. Amateurs is solid but you need to differentiat between. The two and understand that hiding your big chips behind your stack isn't gonna work on me or any serious poker player that's seen 500k to a million hands or more over their "amateur" career. Maybe one day I hope to see you at the tables.

It's a fallacy to say it's "easier to play against a pro". Rubbish. Good pros understand MDF and will not let you run them over or bluff them so easily. They will stick around NEARLY as much as the "reckless amateur". Only it will be with a finer understanding of ranges and probabilities. If you fold too easily you can't really be considered a pro. In Ed Miller's book "Poker's 1 %" he explains that very sticky amateurs are actually playing much closer to theory then even they realize. You're supposed to be a "pain in the arse" to make you less exploitable. The problem with amateurs is they start with ranges that are just too weak and their "stickniess" is just too much, they are losing players as long as you don't go overboard trying to exploit them.
