  • This episode of the series “Alive! In America’s Delta” from December 9, 2013, focuses on the efforts of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and their partners to reestablish the Louisiana Black Bear and restore its habitat. It covers: the story of a famous Louisiana Black Bear hunt by President Teddy Roosevelt that led to the creation of the Teddy Bear; the importance of hunter education; the research into bear populations in Louisiana; the work of LDWF agents in trapping and releasing a nuisance bear; land management initiatives; and the work of LDWF agents in tracking bears and their cubs.       One was in a dumpster at the Jena courthouse and I saw a small one near a pond and blackberry patch in Belah near Jena.

    I truly enjoyed watching your informational documentary. Your conservation efforts will ensure the survival of these bears in your beautiful state.
    It was very interesting watching and listening to how you all handle bears. I've lived my entire life in central PA.. and we too had to act in order to ensure that the black bear would be around for generations to come. Nowadays Pennsylvania boast a healthy bear population of somewhere between 16,000 to 20,000 animals. Something my grandparents never experienced in their time.
    Definitely goes to show just how well these bears do if we all pitch in and do our part.
