  • In this webinar, Tate Wentz (Water Quality Division Manager with the Arkansas Dept. of Agriculture), Shanon Phillips (Director for the Water Quality Division of the Oklahoma Conservation Commission), and Leif Kindberg (Director of the Illinois River Watershed Partnership) present on "The Planning and Implementation of Conservation in Critical Source Areas through Watershed Based Management Planning in a Multi-Jurisdictional Watershed" emphasizing the use of the USEPA’s Critical Source Area Identification and BMP Selection: Supplement to Watershed Planning Handbook.
In their webinar, Tate, Shanon, and Leif demonstrate strategies for CSA identification and BMP selection. Specifically, they:
    1. Highlight key components of CSA Handbook
    2. Provide an overview of methodologies for the identification of CSAs
    3. Present on local-level implementation of conservation using watershed management plans and CSAs to guide efforts, including:
    • How the state of Oklahoma is updating the Hydrologic and Analysis Water Quality System (HAWQS) for statewide use and a demonstration in the Illinois River watershed. HAWQS uses the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to simulate effects of land management practices on select water quality parameters (e.g., sediment, pathogens, nutrients).
    • How the Illinois River Watershed Partnership, a local non-profit, has guided local-level identification and implementation of BMPs through voluntary conservation practice adoption within the watershed.
This presentation is part of our Outcomes Estimation Tools Training Webinar series. With support from US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Walton Family Foundation, American Farmland Trust is providing project managers with these trainings to aid in their quantification of outcomes associated with farm conservation practices. The webinars are held on the first Wednesday of each month through 2024. See all sessions and REGISTER HERE: bit.ly/3MZQ5K8. Find recordings of past sessions here: bit.ly/45uGLEp.
