Sorry, sometimes I slip in TV Tropes references without thinking about it. Basically, it's a character you feel sorry for: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheWoobie
The part with Rimmer and the sandwich is one of my favorite parts. Its one of the few times Lister and Rimmer communicate like normal people instead of people hate each other and actually almost seem like friends.
To be fair, corporations having access to a creepy and privacy-violating amount of information about individuals and everyone just kind of accepting it as normal is possibly the most accurate prediction about the future Red Dwarf ever made.
Regarding the Triple Fried Egg sandwich from the episode's first act, it's not at all surprising that a few fans have replicated it, myself included the day of this writing (albeit with just two slices of bread, hot sauce rather than chilli (though I'm sure there isn't much of a difference) and three slices of seared ham in place of the third slice of bread). It's very filling, but it tastes really great! It's no wonder why Rimmer spoke favourably about it: The chutney (in this case Mango, which most fans agree on) and hot sauce add a subtle spicy sweetness, resulting in a genuinely good brunch sandwich. It's definitely worth making at least once. I still have no idea how a book on Bacteriological Warfare could lead Lister to make such a surprisingly good sandwich, though.
"I've always got a pen." Has become my life quote. I've currently got 75...fountain pens. A few over 100 years old. I also own the Parket Frontier Translucent Blue, which is the fountain pen Rimmer uses in series 10-12.
I must admit I am one of those Rimmer fan girls. Rimmer is my fav character from the original run. Second would be Lister, then Cat and finally Kryten. With the new run though it's changed. I'd say Cat is my fav, then Rimmer, then a tie between Lister and Kryten.
I love the opening scenes on the moon. Rimmer drunk is amazing and same with again Chris Barrie with the sandwich as his reaction and description is fantastic. I love the idea that Rimmer explaining even if you do all the right things morally in life with following the rules doesn’t give you the best life at times. Lister doing the right thing of giving Rimmer a good memory to help him is great in theory but in the long term it would cause harm which is like every action can have good or bad actions depending. I only noticed about the Lister appendix situation when watching some of the DVD extras. The confession scene and its aftermath is brilliant physical comedy. Craig Charles is brilliant at his range in this episode. I love it is a simple story that does have heart and I feel means well but goes wrong not on purpose but more accidentally. One of the weaker episodes of the series but still better than a lot of episodes later on. Again great analysis Dena.
Ya know, I always wondered why Cat laughed at Rimmer only having sex once. It's one more than Cat ever had. Doesn't Cat say in other episodes that he never met a woman in real life?
+leahcim I always thought that too, but this time, something occurred to me. He says "THAT many?" which makes it sound like he's reacting to hearing a big number--so maybe to him the joke is that he's shocked that it's such a high number. Ie, he's surprised Rimmer's been able to have sex that many times.
There are features in the early series from other parts of the world, Lister has the Stars and Stripes along with the Union Flag on his quad bike and the crew were multinational, think it's trying to show the Earth is more unified in the future, the global currency is called the dollarpound.
@@Cyborcat Watching your Red Dwarf vlogs I'd noticed (for the first time) that the message changed quite frequently. According to this page: reddwarf.fandom.com/wiki/Sleeping_quarters it's a status display which changed to reflect what the bunk occupants were doing at the time and would display messages such as "Asleep", "Drunk" and "It's too naughty". :)
The appendix been taken out again could be explained away by the episode DNA, where Lister is transmogrified into different creatures and then back into himself. Possibly making him "whole" again as his body has been remade from DNA. But then again he still has his tattoos too so is a stretch
+Kelcore You are absolutely correct. It's like in the "Animorphs" books where one can lose a limb, morph into a new, undamaged form and then revert to their natural form. Their limb would be fully regenerated. DNA is not affected by injuries or surgeries.
I've came to the D,N,A explanation myself and there could be another, when lister tricks the inquisitior into erasing himself, his last words were that "ALL MY GLORIOUS WORK WILL BE UNDONE" maybe one of the replacement lives was the doctor who told lister (perhaps incorrectly) that he needed an appendectomy.
The moment where Rimmer tells Holly to fast-forward past his drunken confession, I'm reminded of the scene in Spaceballs where Dark Helmet tells the crewman to fast-forward past the Ludicrous Speed incident. I half expected Rimmer to say "In fact, never play this again".
I enjoyed this episode, too. One thing you forgot to mention, which was one of my favourite parts, is when Rimmer is explaining how the aliens that allegedly entered the ship spoke. They break legs, and it hurts like Hell. They do it below the knee -- low. They do it twice -- two and jigsaw puzzle must mean "you" -- hello to you. After this, Cat says, "I would hate to be around when one of these suckers is making a speech." This was fun to watch and I liked it. Also something to notice that is mentioned in the collector's booklet. When Lister and Cat are looking at the headstone, Lister is not shown wearing a cast. Craig Charles (who played Lister) was not present at the moment, so they had a double fill in for him (behind the helmet). The cast did not fit the person's leg, which is why "Lister" is not shown wearing the cast.
I don't know if you read about this or saw it in the DVD commentaries but Craig Charles's girlfriend went into labor during this filming so somebody else took the role of wearing the cast and it's on the wrong foot by accident
Did you like the Glen Tokyo whiskey Lister has beside him? I like how Rob and Doug melded cultures together in their future as it would be in real life and is already happening thanks to the internet where a pan net culture is occurring right now with all of us from different countries suddenly able to communicate instantly. I also liked how the episode ended with Lister placing the last piece of the the jigsaw of the back of Red Dwarf in as it lifts out to turn into the credit shot.
Recipe for delicious Lister fried egg sandwich. Take 3 slices of bread, toast if you want a firmer sandwich. Fry eggs. Spread chili sauce over first and last bread slices. Lay half of the fried eggs on first slice, spread spiced mango chutney over middle bread slice, place slice chutney side double over eggs. Place chutney on the dry side of bread. Layer fried egg over that slice, place final bread slice on top, chili side down. Prepare to feel like you're having a baby.
I’ve been a Rimmer fan girl for a looonngg time now (36, going on 37) and I was introduced to Red Dwarf as a pre-teen. I’m really trying to think when exactly the coin dropped for me and I can’t say. Nice theory, though. I do remember being distinctly attracted to Rimmer around the Captain Emerald era, but it’s also when puberty hit hard for me. Chris Barrie has always been a bit of totty, tho... 😎
Same with me. I once mentioned it to a Red Dwarf fan who is a good friend. She looked at me like I was BONKERS for thinking Rimmer/Chris is hot. I think the only reason some people can't see it is because both his famous characters (Rimmer and Brittas) constantly pull really unattractive but funny faces. He goes for laughs over vanity. Too bad he didn't make more stuff as himself when a bit younger. But I'll still take the older one.
4:16 Love how that's not actually Craig Charles in the spacesuit, but someone else standing in for him as he had to rush off to hospital for the birth of his son. But sadly got there too late.
Your red dwarf vlogs are always among my favorite things you do Dena! I love this show so much and don't really think there is a bad Rimmer episode ( I think holoship is probably my favorite episode). I wonder what your favorite episode is? I do think the first 2 seasons overall are the best, I will probably get some hate over this but to be honest i'm not the biggest Kriton fan ( he's ok just not in the same league as dave, Arnold, and especially the cat),though I would take kiton over kachanski any day. I can't help but feel from one episode to the other we are seeing different realities, that would be the only explanation for things like Dave's appendix, the fact that in the first couple episodes it's mentioned that he's only tlked to Kachanski like a total of 5 minutes ( when later it's lore that he had a relationship with her), and later in another episode it's mentioned that Rimmer lost his virginity to a girl in the back seat of his brothers car ( along with many other inconsistencies). Anyhow I always await ptiently for your next RD vlog and just when i get ready to give up you come out with another, great job as always!
There was an explination for Lister's appendix. In the series 4 episode DNA, Lister got turned into a chicken, a hamster and then back into a human by the DNA machine. When the machine rebuilt his human form, it also rebuilt his appendix.
Another thing they do a lot on this show, besides the beer glasses on the head, is the fist biting thing. I've never seen that anywhere but on this show.
I remember Lenny & Squiggy, a couple of secondary characters in Laverne and Shirley (a sitcom made in the late 1970s & early 80s) did it quite a lot. It was even added to the opening credits. It may have been an 70s/80s thing or a 50s/60s thing, not really sure.
You could easily compare this episode to other Star Trek episodes what with it having a holographic character and playing with their memories and a conspiracy.
Further question about the crew memories: if the entire crew has their memories stored with their personalities to become a hologram, why does Lister have to record his again for the mind patch?

In my opinion, 'Thanks for the Memory' is the best Red Dwarf episode of them all.
The music in the observation lounge is some of my favorite from the series.
