Derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Vishuvam,’ Vishu symbolizes the equal division of day and night. The festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil, as it is believed that Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura on this day.
The most important ritual is the Vishukkani, an arrangement of fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, gold, raw rice, and new clothes in front of a mirror and Lord Krishna’s idol. It is believed that seeing this auspicious sight first in the morning ensures a prosperous year ahead.
Bursting crackers is another tradition, said to ward off evil spirits.
In Northern Kerala, two boys dress up in dried banana leaves, representing Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi, and visit ancestral homes to bless them. A grand feast called Vishu Sadhya, prepared with seasonal produce and served on a banana leaf is also enjoyed during the festival. While it is called Vishu in Kerala, similar celebrations occur throughout India, such as Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Goa, Bihu in Assam, Baisakhi in Punjab, and the new year in Nepal.
