Wave Ceiling Keeps Outdoor Spaces Cool Without Fans

- K-Studio is an architecture firm in Greece that designed a wave ceiling for Barbouni, a restaurant in Costa Navarino. The ceiling cools down the space by providing shade and helping the cool air circulate through the space. The design concept of the entire space is meant to be removable and sustainable.

Wave Ceiling Keeps Outdoor Spaces Cool Without Fans
*Let me tell you a secret. It's not the ceiling that makes the space cooler, it's the wind and the open space. It's called ventilation.*
Exactly.
r /woosh
Also it's on beach where the weather is always windy.
The shade provides the cooling.
The wind ventilation is there either way.
It is an interesting organic design.
lmao
If the sheets move because of the wind, doesn't that mean that air circulation is already present? These sheets seem redundant.
Hahahahahahah
same. it also requires wind. i think this is just an artwork only lured by clickbait title.
Yes it’s redundant. It’s already wIndy. It does not necessarily produce wind. It’s only for design purposes. Dumb title for this video.
Marketing
it magnifies the air circulation brought on by the wind.
Thanks for pointing out the ceiling with a big red arrow on the thumbnail. Wouldn’t have seen it without it.
Ikr. I have a hard time telling my ups from my downs.....
😐
I have a problem telling left from right sometimes...
No joke °-°
Lol
Lmaoo the red arrow caught my attention to make me want to read the tittle watch the video
it's just so beautiful ❤️
Like you
Dust everywhere 😜
Looks nasty to me lol
Creepy. Looks like some kind of tentacle.
Eons ago, I saw a video clip on panels of fabric on an indoor ceiling. You touched one then it was like a domino effect for the other panels to 'wave'. It was meant for cooling/ventilation. Obviously, you wouldn't want to have to touch it every 5 minutes but once every hour to freshen a room is doable. I believe it was a Japanese design. I have been searching for years to find it. (This seems like a good place to post with the hope someone else has heard/seen this). Cheers
Did you find the design?
@@mcr5605 Sadly, no. I still think about that design, even mentioned it in a conversation last week. Perhaps it was just a dream 'sent' to me and my quest (contribution) was to find an engineer to make it real...🤔😇😉🖖.
but the restaurant is near the beach, it’s already breezy from the wind from the ocean whatsoever
Couldnt agree more.. you r smartass
The girl keeps asking us rhetorical questions and I’m losing brain cells. It looks really cool tho lol

Is it noisy? I can imagine if the breeze is a bit stronger than usual, the fabric would flap against each other violently. Like literally a loud bar.
Seems like it's light fabric
the most sound produced by a flapping fabric is at the end. and they installed it quite close to each other so that will reduce the wildness of the flaps. plus sea breeze is noisy as it is, the area is open so u will hear more sea breeze than the slight flapping sound produced by those fabrics. i think XD
I would guess it is noisy and distracting. That's why they used a music track and didn't play actual audio from the location.
So what if the rain comes down?
ucak they die
It would become africa.
I thought about this as well
ucak it willbe way more cooler
Jeez read the description. It's removable 😏
*These would be great for Tropical places*
Ha I know you
Na
_Bob McCoy Lisa Guerrero would confront that wave ceiling
Tropical place rain too much
hahaha it would be dead on the first monsoon rain.
I noticed a lot of people commenting the ceiling is redundant on an open space near the sea.
Well... I thought it too, but as a brazilian I can tell you that it doesn't matter much if a public space is an open place with a roof, it can still get warm as if there were no roof at all, and doesn't matter if it's sunny, the inside could still look dark or tainted by the color of the roof if it's translucent, and the people on the edge of the space gets the fresh air while the people on the center or on the escaping side of the wind gotta deal with strangers' aromas and heated air.
Maybe it works by screening the sun just enough as a tree top, while the sway cools down the fabric even on the center, while the open top allows for light to reach everywhere and the heat to escape up instead of being contained. If it works like that, this design is genius for a tropical climate.
Untill it rains
@@ViniSocramSaintThey mean how to install the roof, if you have any information, please do so.
Cool, questions: Rain? Wind? Dust? Insects? Maintenance? How long do they last with sun and weather changing conditions? Can they fold up for rain and storms etc?

Why does an OPEN Building like that, where a lot of wind is, need more ventilation? I think a normal roof would have had thr same effect xDD
LMAO ! I was thinking the same thing ! Like it has no walls on a beach front....how hot can it get ?!
@@palm0607 Very.
Aesthetic purpose
And an actual roof would protect the space from hot sun and rain. That cloth will start rotting after a few months of being exposed to hot and bright conditions as well as salt water and rain.
*"When I am working on a problem I never think about beauty. I only think about how to solve the problem. But when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong."* -- _Buckminster Fuller_
Incredible! I like how the design is practical in the way it acts like an air conditioner/ light filterer and yet it still maintains a very natural look. Great job
THIS WAVE CEILING IS SO SATISFYING
I would pay just to spend hours watching it there. It's so hypnotically relaxing, geez
This is unique and beautiful 🥰
What a masterpiece!! 🤩🤩🤩
And when it rains, it doubles as a waterfall/drinking fountain =D
and builds up mildew for those who prefer the green color
@@PHlophe
Yumm extra flavor
Exactly my thoughts :)))
*If indeed it cools the place and not cause it's OUTDOOR, I want to see this design used in an enclosed environment, like a regular room.*
Here comes hurricane tortilla
That would give me so much anxiety!
Just imagine you are in a car going though a car wash.
That's great! what're wavy's materials?
Greece architects invented a Wind Architecture, that I was looking for in UA-cam, if they will continue a movement in this direction it can become a new style
Any DIY instructions to recreate this at home??? I want to do this to my pergola
Me too
Iv done it, it’s a lot of work and alot of $$$ in fabric lol
What kind of fabric is that?
@@xpatcan1 what kind of fabric did you use?
Seriously !!! ?? This is freaking AWESOME !!!
Does anyone know what is the fabric has been used? would love to use this for an outdoor seating. Thanks
Beautiful ceiling.
This is so *AESTHETIC*
So *BEAUTIFUL*
Beautiful how engineers can copy nature with just art
It's so good that they take so much care of the environment
This looks so cool. 😮
It is beautiful but looking at this is making my skin crawl for some odd reason
I have a bunch of sheets laying around waiting to.be used ..I got my summer project test this out
Great art installation.
ahaha its the coast.. theres a 20 mph wind every day
No guys, it's not the *wind* which makes the place cooler, it's the *damn bed sheets*
Beautiful! Love the design
Awesome design. What an innovation I hope to see one day
Great! Practical and esthetic.
This is so satisfying...
WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL
Wow that is awesome
It cools down the space by using the wind that's already blowing throughout the space? Amazing.
That’s freakin amazing 😱🤯😳
It's crazy how far animation has come when you can compare real life video to it, and ask "It looks like animation right?".
It looks so surreal. Nice!
Looks super sick!
*GET ONE FOR [insert expensive amount]*
It’s so cool and satisfying
I wish more designers would mimic what nature has done since the beginning
So satisfying 😍 yes Or no
Oh my god it's beautiful
Could this be applied in a interior foyer setting if there was circulation nearby?
Before watching the video i impresed but after knowing it is outdoor and near beach i strted to doubt. Without this i think wind still flowing
It's already next to the beach just put a regular canopy or roof over it. Its a beach its generally windy already.
Love the ceiling, the lamps seem ridiculous.
It's beautiful
Nice 👍🏿 keep up the good work
This is trippy
Fine fine, I clicked it !!
So satisfying
Those CUTE baby Turtles : )
Brilliant and beautiful
Mesmerizing!!
What a great idea
So satisfied if I was at that restaurant I would be looking at the Roof
Wow, this is brilliant
Genius
What if it rains?
You beat me to it 😭😭😭
Literally said this outloud
There are no rains in summer at Greece
it will get wet.
The narrator will have you covered: it keeps the rain out and allows it in.
What kind of fabric is that ?
now thats genius
Just wow
bravo.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please anyone tells me what the material of these wave ceiling?? 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Yesssss more of this stuff!!!
Reminds me of mushrooms
reminds me of sails :D
Who needs this in their house? ME!!!!!
Umm...
Rain
Wind
Storms
Animals
Bird shit
Leaves
Tree branches
Imagine looking up at night and you have no fukin roof
So...it's an awning. Besides the aesthetics, I'm questioning the claims that the ruffles actually increase cooling beyond that already presented by the air circulation allowed and shade provided.
Alas there will be people buying this stuff without understanding it is totally useless. But it looks so nice and customers will be attracted no doubt.
what is the temperature difference that it actually reduce ,any real data to backup any practicality of this design .This kind of windy area don't really need fans to cool down anyway
but what material is the fabric?
Good idea, but need testing in S.E.Asia for its efficiency, durability, maintenance, anti-insect housing & etc.....
For someone with allergies... The thought of those sheets collecting dust and being fanned while you sit under it.... Scares me 😭
This is soooooooooooo cool.
i can imagine that it does not cool actively. more likely, heat cannot build up underneath it but sun doesnt reaally shine through it. so cool shade is made. the example that its like an aircondition isnt quite the correct example.
I've actually got the patent for this type of ceiling. What should I do now??
Beautiful but friendly to Bees or Wasps before I actually watched it. Nevermind.. 😍😍
Beautiful
Now this is what we need not fans with smoke comeing out and destroying our air
What kind of fans are you using my dude?

How can I buy this?
there is also one in Medan Indonesia, not like this but its the same concept using many steel plate on a wall. It make it look like a wave using wind also, and probably a chime sound?
Trippy af
Bravo!!!!!
Makes me itch
I don't understand why they keep on insisting that it's the fabric that makes the area cooler, as if the wind moves up and down. The area would still be cool because, duh, it has no walls to block the wind coming from the sea. Also, what if it rains? What would you say to the customers when the get wet under those hanging fabrics that won't catch rain? Yeah it looks cool but it's straight up lying if you say that the fabric cool the area when it's not. Pretty but not practical.
Wow you're so smart you really had to type a paragraph for that
I think they meant to say it makes the area cooler by shading it.
The wind is what's cooling the area, the placement of the fabrics allows there to be ventilation, which can be simply seen and I know for sure you noted that. However, the fabric also shields the area from the sun, dynamically speaking. Also, if it rains, y tf r u at the beach for? btw at 1:15 you can see they have cover on the top, so maybe the fabric is also removable.
