- Today we explore a topic that is often overlooked by newcomers to falconry - finding and securing land permissions. Without land you won't be able to fly your raptors! It should be one of the most important things you do at the start of your falconry journey. Without land it will be impossible to choose the right raptor for falconry.

I have great respect for Amy. She is so knowledgeable, it’s astounding. I’ve followed her from the startup of her channel. This is one case in point that you must really love what you do in life, and do it to the best of your ability. You can see her passion and the great care she takes in every aspect of her profession. I was particularly impressed with this video. You don’t realize the complexity of all the steps you have to take to insure that the owners, the birds, and the areas you can access all work in harmony with each other. To be honest, my head was spinning after listening to her because many people would say: No thanks, I have trouble just teaching my dog how to sit. 😂 I wish you continued success Amy.

Loads of really good information for the aspiring falconer or hunter, Amy. One thing to add, if I may - don't forget that when you're on someone else's property, the creatures you hunt are (technically) theirs, too. If you are successful, it never hurts to offer the results of your hunt to the landowner once in a while. I shoot rabbits and the occasional brace (paunched and skinned) can be not only evidence that you're doing what you have agreed to do, but also a chance to chat and improve the landowner/permission holder relationship. If nothing else, it can mean some fresh meat for the farm dogs if the household don't eat rabbit themselves. Hope you're finding plenty of permissions in Scotland.

Wow, it never would have occurred to me all the tiny little details that go into falconry. Details that make the difference between life and death. Fascinating 💜
Great information in this piece to consider! Touched on but not explained much here are bait traps and their danger. In the USA many people, businesses rely on purchasing bait traps. A high likelyhood of these being used around apartment complexes or industrial/commercial centers due to issues with mice & rats around trash disposal areas that attract them. The danger with these poisons eaten by rodents contain blood anti-coagulants which causes those that eat it to bleed to death. Such can also can end up being consumed by birds of prey that catch & eat rodents that have previously eaten poison (they can end up as primary or secondary consumers of the rodenticide). Meaning if you were using some sort of owl for falconry (which rodents are often target species) you'd really need to get far out of town to mitigate the risk of accidental consumption. Best wishes all!
Now I worry about the red-tailed hawk who nests in a downtown park, and the peregrines at City Hall. (I also saw a pair of turkey vultures circling over my apartment today.)
I feel quite guilty as I have watched so many of your videos but as they were on my TV I was unable to comment. Now I am here I must applaud your amazing commitment, Amy. I doubt very much I will ever get in to Falconry at my time of life but it doesn't stop me from hugely admiring your work and the effort you put in to looking after and training your birds. Your videos are a delight to watch and I have to say, Fable does leave me with many a smile. Incidentally, something you may not have considered but has realised itself for me. Watching your relationship with Fable has inspired a deeper relationship for me with my dog, Jenny. I think you've just shown how man and animals can have a greater bond if it is nurtured by man. I won't join your channel as I can't see how I can be actively involved. However, I do think you should have a F.O.F, which can read either as 'Friends of Fable' or 'Friends of Falconry', whereby members can contribute whatever they are able to afford, towards the cost of running your operation. Thanks for posting this important segment Amy!👍Your a lady and a scholar!🎓 Some Falconers covet and horde Land🏞 that they have access to, and prefer not to share their hunting locations with others, for fear that it would soon be over hunted and not useful after prey species gets depleted after a short time.🕙 I can understand this sentiment, especially since after putting all the effort in finding and securing a pristine hunting location to fly your bird or birds, but to keep it just to yourself, comes from a greed mentality, which is a personal flaw with people with issues and doesn't apply to all Falconers🦅. I appreciate all your efforts and sharing your valuable insights with other Falconers, 🦅 like myself and others. Great upload, common sense instruction that needs to be taught - for everyone, not just falconers. Also, it is good to show why you might need a falconer, many people don't know this!
Great tutorial on bird hunting. I hate to say this but the USA has more and better falcon hunting land. Blessings on your new child but also the parents too. I am positive your child will grow up respecting nature and all the animals who inhabit it. Be well and be safe.

I fly My bird at my local golf course,it's ideal as it's got open areas and woodland,there is plenty of quarry aswell.

Dear Robert, I have to go to the doctor & get my skin cancer zapped each year. They tell me my vitamin D is low, to get more sun, then I tell them I have a slight case of skin cancer. They don’t know what to say to me? Just one of the disadvantages of being 70 years old & Caucasian. I would use factor 1,000 if they made it. 😁 As an amateur astronomer, I’m exposed to thousands of suns each night. I’m glad they’re thousands of light years away! 🤔✨
Although I will never own a bird of prey, I love learning about Amy’s birds. I once had a cockatiel for 17 years. She was so much fun and loyal to me; like a dog - unconditional love. She passed away a few years ago and that’s why I’m a bird person like you and Amy. Keep looking up, 🔭⭐️🪶🕊🦅🦉😀

Glad to read you’re a fellow amateur astronomer! I have two astronomer friends in Cardiff, Wales, UK who visited us in the fall of 2019. We treasured their visit as though they were royalty! I’m a BIG fan of the UK 🇬🇧, even as a child because my childhood heroes were ‘real’ people, not fake made up people like Superman, Batman, Lone Ranger, etc. My number #1 hero was Admiral Horatio Nelson, with others like Christopher Columbus and John Paul Jones. 😀 They influenced me later on in life, I spent 20.5 years in the U.S. Navy. How I wished to visit Portsmouth to see the HMS Victory. 🤔 Sadly, never made it to UK. 😔⛵️
How’s the stargazing in Scotland? Do you have a dark sky place you can drive to, in order to see the Milky Way? Sadly we are losing our dark sky to light pollution. I have to drive 1 hour to the local mountains to see the Milky Way. I go there once a month, to a mountain resort and walk campers across the dark starry night sky with my 10” Dobsonian reflecting telescope. Too much fun with Sagittarius and Scorpius being the 2 big constellations of interest. I love to show them where the center of the Milky Way is using Sagittarius (teapot asterism)… its spout points there as you well know. 😀✨⭐️ Saturn & Jupiter are the favorites now too, especially Saturn with its rings! 🪐

Don't understand land-ownership. How can an individual own a part of the Earth?
In truth.... They don't.
Actually, this essential task of falconry should be the first requirement today. Far too many folks keep raptors and have nowhere to hunt them, have no game or have very poor and hazardous areas in which to fly their birds! This circumstance gets worse with every passing year.

I'm not a falconer and don't plan to become one, but I'd appreciate if someone would answer my curiosity questions regardless:
In your respective countries ..
If your animal (bird or dog) kills a rare and/or protected specimen, do you have to report that? What are the consequences?
If your animal hunts off limits and kills privately owned fowl (chickens etc.) do you tell the owner and repay the loss? What do you do, if you don't know, can't identify or locate the owner?
Is land permission the only kind of permission you need? Or do you have to get permission by a local forester (or similar) that dictates how much of which species you're allowed to hunt and at which time of the year/day and at which locations?
What if I see a falconer "in the wild" flying their birds. (When) Is it safe to approach for a chat? Or are falconers better left alone?

Q1. The Wildlife and Countryside act protects species in UK law.
Q2. Best practice here would definitely be to knock on their door, apologise and offer to pay for their loss.
Q3. There is not individual tags here for most pest species. We work within seasons set for each species. However if you wish to hunt certain protected birds for the purpose of falconry or pest control then licensing is required and you are told how many you may hunt. You then must fill in paperwork at the end of the year recording what as caught, where and when. This is sent back to a governmental organisation who issues the license. If you request to renew your license, depending on the data, you may be allowed to hunt more or less than the previous year (depending on sustainability, population pressure or other effects).
Q4. Falconers are generally very solitary bears. Most would not necessarily appreciate being interrupted mid hunt/flight. However many are happy to chat. If the bird is on the glove and the dog at heel or on a lead then you're probably in a good position to approach and talk. Top tip - don't suddenly reach out to touch the bird. That's a good way to get them to stop talking to you lol.

That's very true, I don't have birds, but I've got a Bloodhound. When I put him on the scent, he will kill himself to track it, human or animal.

I don't know any falconers nor do I think I will ever be around one or get to hunt with a bird. But I watched this whole video with great interest. Has falconry always been a sport or did hunters use it to catch prey for their own comsumption?

My tips would be to practice with the system before using it on a free flying bird so that you feel confident with the way it works and its limitations. (Get someone to hide the transmitter for you then track it down). Also I always fit telemetry to the bird at the creance stage of training - a. so the bird gets used to the process of fitting and removing it before free flight. This stops the bird getting distracted by it on that first free flight and b. it helps if god forbid you have an accident or equipment failure while on the creance. Hope that helps :)
@@FalconryAndMe it does help yes, very much, I was after a small transmitter, I used tail mount last season, but this year would like a smaller leg mount, it looked like I could see a fairly small transmitter on your HH leg. I had deck feather damage last season, very woody and bramble are everywhere in my areas.

Yes we do. Fantastic, tenacious dogs which we also find great for tracking deer.
