These katas are nearly indistinguishable from the ones we do in my dojo. Ah, I love me some traditional style karate. Something about seeing people screaming and stomping like roid-raged dinosaurs makes my stomach turn.

2014 I am reviewing the three sections posted by New England Budo....really the most important record of Matsubayashi early teaching. It seems yo be about 1964 or 1965 based on the ranks noted. Takayoshi came to USA in 1968 as a nidan to Cincinatti, Ohio to attend college about 19 years old. The home of Jim Wax, Frank Grant, and others. Ansei Ueshiro arrived in 1962 to teach in New York....he had trained 1955 to 1962 in the Nagamine dojo plus Toguchi goju and kobudo with Kyan Shinei.....He was also 3rd dan instructor and did demonstrations for guest visitors. Sam Palmer was a nidan in Okinawa at that time..returned to USA in 1965 and taught in Beleville Illinois before moving to Panama City. In 1964 the first kata taught was Naihanchishodan...and kiba dachi horse stance...Half hour.later Three Fukyugata kata...Pinans were considered advanced kata. Wankan, Rohai, were black belt kata, then bo and sai fundamentals. We owe a great deal to these early karate-ka Thank you all for your comments. @ennot That is Gerardo Sensei who belongs to the Kyudokan Association of Minoru Higa Hanshi as I do. He is a big man over 6 feet tall. I see the Matsubayashi kata and the older version done by the Kyudokan as very different kata. I tried to find another Kyudokan dojo kata, but did not find any. 35 years and going, yes I still enjoy Budo. I empathize with the student that had medical problems, but I shake my head when people do not think about personal budget, etc. when they sign contracts. The onus is put on them. I starved for too many years b/c I listened to "I'll pay you tomorrow!"

@GreatSirZachary This version of Fukyu gata dai ichi was created by Nagamine Sensei and is widely used in many Goju Ryu & Shorin Ryu dojo. I looked up Empire State Karate dojo and it purports to be a "Matsubayashi " dojo & "Matsamura" dojo. If the above Master created the kata, I fall on his side as to be correct. BTW, you even typed the name incorrectly.

Why is it improper for martial artist who are professionals to have people sign contracts? Other profs. have people sign contracts in other fields? Know how many of my old students said, "I pay you tomorrow?" You don't pay for classes in Okinawa? Let me know where, so I can train there!! 8-)
The Okinawans are very proud people and many of the older generation do not call themselves "Japanese" due to the Battle of Okinawa and the destruction brought down on Okinawa due to the war.
I would also like to see early James Wax, Frank Grant, Gary Tikten, and Bob Yarnell clips if any one can can post. All (or most) modern Matsubayashi in America has been handed down by these first students, we owe them thanks and giri for what we cannot repay, only learn earnestly, and pass on to the best of our abilities.

Watch the kobudo influences of Matayoshi Watch the kumite of Kushi and Nagamine Watch the Makiwara of Yamaguchi and Omine Watch the yakusoku variations and continuous striking.... ni-ren double strikes Especially watch the tandem kumites arm training....Uechi like kotikitai strength. See also very japanese training influences from mainland(JKA) ???, not acknowlegef..but remember this Nagamine books were first published in Japan prior to 1970..???, Then in USA in 1976.
Was is Yamashita himself, or his billing people, or one of his student's dojo? Let's find out who is to blame. Unfortunately, if you had a gym membership would they have helped you out? I think not....sad facts of life.

This is incorrect info. Okinawans spoke Uchinaguchi (Okinawan language) and Japanese to a lesser extent. Some envoys and traders spoke better Japanese or Chinese due to their exposure trading with these groups. Okinawa was an independent government governed by its own King until 1625 when the Satsuma clan from Japan took over. They eventually kidnapped the Okinawan king to Japan to control the Okinawan populace!
@jiggahippo The Okinawan people are a race of their own. Yes, perhaps because of Japanese & Chinese relationships their were multi-cultural off spring but to say that most Okinawans are Chinese is just wrong.
Hah, LOL. If that scares you then definitely stay away from Shotokan's historical beginnings of Naha & Shuri TE (hands) which are Okinawan Shorin Ryu, Goju ryu who kata are much more complicated that the linear Shotokan

The essence is the ultimate version taught today Those very early days they did not teach Kata in order The very early teaches taught Naihanchi first following the Chinese tradition for horse stance. I trained in this system for 6 months in the past in Little Tokyo. Some of my favorite katas were shown on the clip such as Pinan Godan and Nidan. However, a bad experience in training led me to stop training in Okinawan karate altogether. Excellent clip though.
I agree with you 100%. The Hanshi of my style recently died, but my sensei keeps telling us all that back in the day Hanshi Toma originally learned 1 kata (I think Seisan) and did it for a year before learning another. Often kata was learned from other Hanshi. This is why so many different styles have similar kata.

It would seem that Naha-te had Sanchin as its root kata and Shuri-te (Shorin) had Nahanchi as its root kata. Both seem to trace back to China and Shaolin. The details of the transfer are however very sketchy.

I only have the Ota tape that was distributed a few years ago. Sorry, nothing of Matsuda Sensei.
No, it was a demo that Nagamine Sensei put together for some visiting 'Gaijin'! Did you see all 3 parts?
@TMRonin85 If you're looking into something japanese, I would suggest kyokushin karate and then Jiujitsu.
It is atypical of all the Shorin styles. Matsamura Seito is a bit more higher than the others but during Kusanku they drop into a lower stance.

no way the first Kata they do is Fudagata itch (begginer kata number one) I remembe rlearning it as a white belt at empire stat Karate

I did and don't seem him performing Rohai much less performing at all. Am I missing something?
