a really intensive tutorial,
and now knowing about the Custom Controller is super useful,
I did find this tutorial is a bit above my level for DaVinci Resolve,
but in the future, this could be mind blowing and super useful.
A useful Effect for myself would be to have Light or dark Smoke coming from a Chimney or chimneys,
or Fire from the top of a hand held stake (when exploring in the dark)
and Gun Flashes & smoke from Gun Barrels.
and, just a thought,
when you were describing the the Location of the Folder for FX,
when using Icon View, and double clicking each folder,
if you go to Finder Menu Bar,
View Menu,
Show "Path Bar"
Then at the Bottom of your Window,
there will be a horizontal path of all the folders you have navigated to get to the Target Folder,
visually this may be easier for us learners to understand,
I wrote down the path fo future use,
Also you can double click any folder in this "Path Bar" to open it
It's a shame DaVinci Resolve doesn't have an easier Save option.

Once you hit 'enter' on the first expression, the point link doesn't show up immediately. Maybe a short edit to add a note to tell everyone how to get it up (I ended up needing to reload the node by clicking away and back) would be helpful -- oops! Looks like it was a bug in Resolve - seems to have sorted itself out with a restart!
Yeah I had that problem too! But I quick reset fixed it all!
I think I have the same problem too. I try to restart, or click away and it still doesnt work. Any other solutions?

Been waiting for an updated Da Vinci tutorial on this. I was going to switch to Hitfilm express because they have a lightsaber built-in by default. The only thing I would like to learn is how to move it in 3D space, as a lightsaber really does or taper the edges at the very least? The way I’m thinking, which would take a long time, is have a rectangle and key frame the four points?
I can't figure out the 3D space part other than using a 3D cylinder but this makes it incredibly more complicated and resource heavy. I came here hoping to find a solution to this using the paint node with a z space option for the points somehow.
You don't have to worry about 3d space if you use four points and continuously draw a rectangle frame by frame. You likely won't be able to use his "divide and conquer" technique of key framing. if you move it frame by frame you'll have pretty good results....much better than what he came up with. You'll also notice if the saber goes behind something you'll need to either mask it out with an alpha channel or you'll just need to make a more elaborate shape for the lightsaber itself. To get really good results this takes time...and by time I mean a CRAZY amount of time. But the end results will be better. Don't take shortcuts and it will look pretty good.

When i add the glow tool it makes the background black, how do i change it to transparent?

Very nice tutorial! But I was wondering how you could implement a motion tracker. I would like to put two stickers on either end of the toy saber, track the points, and then link the points of the light sabers to the trackers. I think this could potentially save a lot of time with longer animations and get a smoother result (if it is possible).
If you have a look at one of my tutorials "Advanced Callout Tutorial" this would be the method used to create this effect. Im not sure how good it would work though

Nice video. In the future, could you please do a tutorial on "how to make folders inside of the effects library panel in Davinci Resolve". This way you can organize your templates into different categories depending on their purpose. I haven't found any tutorials on this topic and haven't been able to figure it out myself. Jay are Tv seems to have his templates organized this way. Thanks!

I downloaded the lightsaber preset but the growth control is missing. I only have top & botton control & green, red and blue channel control. I have the free Davinci Resolve Versión. I either couldn't follow your steps to build lightsaber by myself, you use glow effect that I dont have in my Davinci version. Can you help me.
I'd also like to put this suggestion out there that I think it'd be more realistic if you masked out the part of the lightsaber that is covered by your hand.

You just need to keyframe the blade growth
Could you make a green screen lightsaber where you replace the green with a colour and add a glow effect?
Good idea, I don’t know if it would work with a glow effect but you could for sure add it after the colour
but what shall I do if the middle of the lightsaber is behind a object?

Just make sure the nodes are in the correct order and it should work
Should explain were to save the lightsaber for Windows computers. Not all the folders from you files is on mine :(

So when i key framing the lightsaber, i have a long and detailed clip no i have to input more points, its starting to get hard to see with the lines showing me the entire history of where the points are going, is there a way i can remove those lines?
You can change what the viewer displays in fusion if you select the three dots ... in the top right off the viewer
where is the preset link?
I tried making a Lightsaber effect in DR and I managed to get it to work. The problem is when I was ready to export it, the effect was not showing up in the video. Like, it wasn't completely composited into the shot. Could you tell me what I did wrong and how to fix that?

Hey, I don't know why but once I have exported my fusion effect (like at 11:30), and want to import it into another project, points 1 and 2 appear but not the lazer .. . Someone can help me ?
You may not have had that node selected when you exported!

The easiest way would be to just animate a blank background image with a soft mask on it and maybe a glow effect... That would achieve the desired result. The actual effect in the movies was created with an illuminating prop to simulate this exact effect

Frame by frame will be the most accurate. It is how they did the actual films

Then added folder vfx
If you are using davinci without installation the setting location will vary.
I thinks that goes to
C:/Users/your username/app data

There are a bunch of blur options in Fusion that you could use
no a blur for the lightsaber when you move it fast, like what they have in the films
