    Jealous? You can pick up my version of the Wassily Chair here (this is not an "original" or official):
    amzn.to/2yWXfer
    One of the most iconic pieces of furniture of the 20th century, the Wassily Chair AKA the Club Chair B3 is one of the most iconic creations of Bauhaus designer Marcel Breuer. To celebrate the new studio pick up, I'm talking about the history of the Wassily chair, starting with a BRIEF overview of the Bauhaus and what elements inspired Breuer and made the Wassily chair possible.
    Friends, please watch until the end of the video for my special announcement and please let me know what you think of this content (it basically has nothing to do with fashion!) but as we already know, the world of fashion, art, design and architecture should all bleed together for a healthy diet.

      sounds like your grandparents had some prettty rad interior decorating style. It was fund doing research about the chairs, I knew the design was popular but it's cool to see how all the pieces came together in the 20s to make them a reality.

    I love my replica Wassily. It was an impulse bargain buy from eBay. It took 10 years of it sitting awkwardly in corners with many housemates wanting to know why I didn’t get rid of it, before I moved into a house where it had a place to be enjoyed.

    I think he meant "least cozy" in that it doesn't LOOK cozy, with its exposed steel frame and minimal use of fabric, not that it's not comfortable. Comfort is an important function for a chair to have, and Bauhaus is, after all, about form following function.

    • @BraveNewWear
      @BraveNewWear  4 роки тому +6

      really interesting point, it certainly looks like it wouldn't be cozy especially compared to a traditional club chair / lazy boy type of overstuffed chair. And certainly it has to be comfortable, just being stripped down and uncomfortable would basically make the chair less functional.

    • @BraveNewWear

      they're all connected man, obviously fashion is in its own "space" but visual mediums all influence each other. I find it really natural to talk about design in the same space that I talk about fashion I guess bc I often think about them in a similar way.

    My father (the lead Code Architect for DFW Airport up until his death in 2007) had two wassily chairs. They were always in our home growing up, I had no clue they were expensive or sought after. I just loved them cause they were a perfect embodiment of my fathers style. My step mother made off with them and a lot of other stuff and we never heard from her again after my fathers funeral. I wish our family still had the chairs just so I could sit in them from time to time and think of my father.

Thanks for your great video, really appreciate it and I didn’t find something similar on UA-cam. Can you see the difference and or have clues to spot a model when it was produced in the Gavina time (before Knoll)?

    What makes the Wassily chair so cool is that its called a 'Wassily' chair is afetr Wassily Kandisnky NOT because it sells better!! The chair was not specificly designed for the non-objective painter Wassily Kandinsky, who was on the Bauhaus faculty at the same time. Kandinsky had admired the completed design, and Breuer fabricated one for Kandinsky's personal quarters. The chair became then "Wassily"

    • @BraveNewWear
      @BraveNewWear  4 роки тому +2

      I’ve read that the manufacturer Gavina named it the wassily when they started reproducing it and I make the conclusion that they probably figured people would recognize Wassily Kandinsky’s name consider B3 is pretty abstract

    In 2000 I was working for Structure/Express for Men in New Orleans .During the transition of the store's name change they offered the decor/customer wait chairs for sale to the employees. At the time I did not know the history of the chair nor that it was The Wassily Chair. I purchased based on my love for the design/art. I have had the chair for 22 yrs and it still looks nearly new. It is chrome and black leather, with no plastic black caps, no stamp, nor labels anywhere. I know at some point Knolls engraved at the chrome base. I'm just wondering if anyone knows where Structure (Limited Brand) would have purchased these from? Also I do realize the chair is now sold by others not just Knolls. I have only seen these in very nice stores with prices as low as $500, and as high as $3500. How do I find info about my chair? I am not sure how long Structure had these in their stores before it was sold to me. I may never know where my chair was originally purchased but hoping someone can help. Btw where is yours from?

    Going to do some shameless self promotion as I wrote about the Bauhaus last year, mostly because it touches on the intersection of the Bauhaus and fashion! I looks at the politics, pedagogy, and legacy of the Bauhas and I make the claim that Commes des Garcons can be seen as a spiritual successor to the school www.illuminationsmedia.co.uk/bauhaus/
    Great vid btw! I'm absolutely here for these types of vids. It's really good to see fashion youtubers not to relegate themselves to just 'how to style' stuff and actually dive into wider and specific history of the medium(s).
    If you're ever in Berlin go to the Bauhaus museum there, it's fantastic. After visiting it really cemented by interest in the school.

      this article is awesome! I hope all of my research holds up (even if it's a brief overview of the bauhaus) I would love to see Berlin, its on my "must visit" list I hear the city is relatively affordable and the nightlife is fun. And in terms of doing "non-fashion related content" it really just feels natural to me. I love art and design as well so I'm glad people are enjoying it.

    My only personal contact with this iconic piece of furniture called Wassily was the 14-year old me getting strongly into fashion (and I'm not exactly talking about the things other kids were attracted to, but deeper stuff) Runways, photography and architecture. A world I built for myself without realising but indeed, enjoying to live in it. Even tho trying to hold my, probably not appropriative for my age, passion back, because I realised I would only be judged, I was proud of my ability to analyse a fashion show, and also to pronounce Wassily correctly, German. Yeah, thats actually what I wanted to say. Isn't it prounounced German?

      That’s dope I love to hear that it resonates with people - I’m PRETTY sure wassily is technically pronounced the German way so yeah it would be “vassily” rather than the w sound in English

    Breuer wasn't German tho, he was Hungarian. Sadly, due to several factors, he doesn't have any building in Hungary.

      True same with Weimar, supposed to be pronounced with a German V sound. I’ve heard the English phonetic pronunciation so many times that it kind of stuck. Same with how people say neanderthal (th sound) instead of a hard T sound and silent h like it actual is in German
