    My 2015 MBP (w/ upgraded SSD & replaced battery) is still my daily driver -- emails, browsing, some webadmin work, etc. I've got it nicely set up with a triple-boot for macOS, Win11, and Linux. For anything more computationally or graphically intensive, I've got my desktop PC.
    Though I have been looking at new laptops because it'll be time to upgrade within the next couple years.

    I worked at Lenovo as an OEM test engineer for 8 years and I can say that we did extensive testing with different types of thermal grease and paste and we conducted many test in a lab setting. One interesting thing we tested was thermal paste longevity and we always had test subjects in the lab running with different types of paste in different climate controlled areas. To conclude, we found out that thermal paste that contains silver will usually last for around 20 years on a CPU application. The drying and cracking of thermal paste is quite common but is still making a seal to the heat sink. During testing, we also noticed that hot spots develop over prolonged periods of use making the CPU a little bit hotter over time. OEM thermal paste always looks bad and seems to dry and crack but let me reassure you that the thermal paste being used is very high quality and is designed to last a very very long time. When engineers are designing laptops, they never expect the end user to replace the thermal paste in the lifetime and afterlife of the device.

      What is the carrying agent ( emulsification agent ) you were using for the silver based paste ? When that flashes the solids flip and turn into insulators in many instances. I assume it was desiged to " flow " to get it out of the syringe ! ?

    my first MacBook and still one of my all-time favourites! I actually had the display replaced by Apple in 2018 as the anti-reflective coating came off, it's been fine since. FYI the northbridge chip is supposed to be left unpasted (6:21 note how the heat spreader doesn't actually cover the smaller die) . Applying paste to it will make the machine run hotter since it's soaking up heat from the CPU.

    • @timrault
      @timrault Рік тому +4

      Yeah that's what I thought too, there's probably a reason why they don't paste it in the factory. Now the smaller die is absorbing heat from the CPU and that's probably not how it's supposed to be thermal-wise

    I recently bought a fully maxed out 15'' 2015 MB Pro for only $300. The main downside of it was that one of the previous owners literally used sandpaper to get rid of the anti glare coating. Because of it he completely obliterated the screen layer beneath it. Fortunately that screen layer was made from some type of plastic so I spent 40h on dissolving it with acetone and polishing the remains of the glue. It came out really good and I even bought and applied a new anti glare coating onto its screen. The computer is in overall perfect shape and its original battery even had only 300 cycles on it. All in all if think I got myself a great deal, tho German keyboard layout is starting to annoy me, but I may get used to it.

    LOL the timing of this video is uncanny. I purchased a 2014 MacBook Air for $1 from my work as it had cosmetic issues, someone dropped it and the corners were bent. It was marked as non-working for some reason, came from another building. A rag and a pliers fixed them back to almost normal. The battery was toast and would not hold a charge but had a pile of old batteries that were slated for recycling and found one with a lower amount of cycles. So it holds a charge now. Loaded MacOS Ventura via OpenCore Legacy Patcher, works great! Also picked out a decent charger from the pile that was left over after the auction. So being an IT admin has it perks and I had a great MacBook Air for my recent vacation trip. Gave me hours of movie watching as I loaded the drive up with TV shows and movies I had ripped. Cheers!

    I'd actually disagree since moving to quad cores was such a nice change even for just normal web browsing with as heavy as pages have gotten nowadays, especially if you're a heavy multitabber like me. I just won a bid for the 15" with the M370X used, excited to get it! Until the 13" models moved to quad core, they all felt pokey to me even just on web browsing and basic use.

    There needs to be a light abrasive that won't scratch the screen, toothpaste or Brasso works well with a microfiber cloth, using Brasso, I've done the coating in as little as 10 minutes. You end up with a very shiny screen and yes, there will be glare, but there are ways to deal with that as well

    • @eh86055
      @eh86055 Рік тому

      I think some of these had plastic screens, so the Brasso might polish them a bit. The ethyl alcohol in the wipes is probably the least invasive method (avoid IPA because that'd probably dissolve the plastic).

    After disconnecting the battery, I would also press the power button 3-4 times to drain as much power as possible from the components. Great video, the visuals are awesome, truly satisfying. Love it ❤❤️

    4:38 I recently bought a cheap thinkpad and did just that. I was surprised when I found out it had another big battery inside when it turned on out of nowhere. No damage done and a pleasant surprise.

    You keep saying die in all of your videos for the package.
    The die is what's inside the package and sometimes visible (the shiny bit on top)
    But the package that holds the die(s) has the pins and the bond wires. So please don't confuse both, thanks.
