I worked at Lenovo as an OEM test engineer for 8 years and I can say that we did extensive testing with different types of thermal grease and paste and we conducted many test in a lab setting. One interesting thing we tested was thermal paste longevity and we always had test subjects in the lab running with different types of paste in different climate controlled areas. To conclude, we found out that thermal paste that contains silver will usually last for around 20 years on a CPU application. The drying and cracking of thermal paste is quite common but is still making a seal to the heat sink. During testing, we also noticed that hot spots develop over prolonged periods of use making the CPU a little bit hotter over time. OEM thermal paste always looks bad and seems to dry and crack but let me reassure you that the thermal paste being used is very high quality and is designed to last a very very long time. When engineers are designing laptops, they never expect the end user to replace the thermal paste in the lifetime and afterlife of the device.

I recently bought a fully maxed out 15'' 2015 MB Pro for only $300. The main downside of it was that one of the previous owners literally used sandpaper to get rid of the anti glare coating. Because of it he completely obliterated the screen layer beneath it. Fortunately that screen layer was made from some type of plastic so I spent 40h on dissolving it with acetone and polishing the remains of the glue. It came out really good and I even bought and applied a new anti glare coating onto its screen. The computer is in overall perfect shape and its original battery even had only 300 cycles on it. All in all if think I got myself a great deal, tho German keyboard layout is starting to annoy me, but I may get used to it. Thank you for such interesting and engaging videos.
Nice! Do you have any link to a guide or website on how to apply the anti-reflective coating? Or did you did you just stick an anti-reflective film on the screen?
I have the same MacTop and had a bad case of the screen delamination. I used the Target "up & up" brand "fragrance-free cloth-like baby wipes" in the light blue package. I watched that guy's Listerine video- and I was prepared for hours of scrubbing. I was done in well under 15 minutes. No scratching and it looks great.
This exact Macbook has been my daily driver since 2018. The display coating went bad over time (as expected), and I remedied that with babywipes! (of all things). Looks the business now 👍
I bought the exact same MacBook for $200 off of eBay. To get the anti-reflective coating cleaned off I used metho mixed with water and baby wipes. The MacBook works good especially with opencore Legacy Patcher I'm now running Ventura with an adaptor so now I've got 2 terabyte SSD in the MacBook.
We have 2 of these, and I thought the one was bad for a long time. I thought the screen was scratched or some glue residue, so one day, ready to bin the machine, I took oven cleaner to see if I can get rid of the gunk. What a pleasant surprise when it came perfectly clean! I now need to replace the trackpad as it will not click anymore.
LOL the timing of this video is uncanny. I purchased a 2014 MacBook Air for $1 from my work as it had cosmetic issues, someone dropped it and the corners were bent. It was marked as non-working for some reason, came from another building. A rag and a pliers fixed them back to almost normal. The battery was toast and would not hold a charge but had a pile of old batteries that were slated for recycling and found one with a lower amount of cycles. So it holds a charge now. Loaded MacOS Ventura via OpenCore Legacy Patcher, works great! Also picked out a decent charger from the pile that was left over after the auction. So being an IT admin has it perks and I had a great MacBook Air for my recent vacation trip. Gave me hours of movie watching as I loaded the drive up with TV shows and movies I had ripped. Cheers!
I'd actually disagree since moving to quad cores was such a nice change even for just normal web browsing with as heavy as pages have gotten nowadays, especially if you're a heavy multitabber like me. There needs to be a light abrasive that won't scratch the screen, toothpaste or Brasso works well with a microfiber cloth, using Brasso, I've done the coating in as little as 10 minutes. You end up with a very shiny screen and yes, there will be glare, but there are ways to deal with that as well
I think some of these had plastic screens, so the Brasso might polish them a bit. The ethyl alcohol in the wipes is probably the least invasive method (avoid IPA because that'd probably dissolve the plastic).
