A business mentor told me decades ago "Do what you do best, pay people to do the rest." This applies to making this DIY. I have the skills to make one, I no longer have the tools or space, and earning the money to pay for one wouldn't take that much time, so just buy whichever and move on with your day.
I use the Astropad Darkboard and it has completely changed how I use my iPad for art. It works perfectly for me. I haven't had any heat issues at this point.
Looks like a positive improvement though the lower minimal angle might not be enough for everybody - I would suggest different size or adjustable legs. Still the probability of loosing one these is high. One other thing I would add is a cover for the iPad space allowing you to use the as a regular drawing table (maybe a reading one, too…)
I have been thinking I need something like this. Generally I use a lap desk but you know the problems there, no propping up on desks, doesn’t stay put, blah blah. Just checked and my size is out of stock but I bookmarked it for later.
I still love my Sketchboard Pro Gen 1. Never have any issues with the foldable “legs”. But the con is the thing is big and bulky and heavy AF. I actually used Posca Markers and drew on it, I felt it needed color than a simple black Sketchboard Pro. Pro 2’s stick pegs or legs worries me of losing them despite they can be stored securely.
Same, I just ordered the Nano textured ipad pro and I will be ordering both of these products for it. It’s so cool that they even make these. Cool videos!
Thanks for your lovely review! I’m trying to finally get into drawing and love how informative you were but also funny with the random gifs and comments 😂
I wish they sold the "upgrade" thingy for the iPad Mini 6 size too. I wonder if the Pro 2 will have a Mini 6 upgrade, the page is coming soon, it says on their website.
Glad they made some changes. I wasn’t crazy about the first one. Been looking into the Darkboard and Sketchslate. The SB2 seems like a solid choice for now.
I got the original SBPro when it first came out and love it! I might get the second version for my second iPad to use in amobile situation as my first one is setup as a workstation.
I use a Parblo drawing display stand. I like that its fully adjustable to whatever angle with a single lever action and it fits fairly flat in a suitcase. No weird legs to take off or lose, no need to buy different adapters if you change devices. If your charging cable is on the right or the left just flip your iPad, you aren't forced to have it in one orientation or another.
Dude. That was seriously funny with the “build your own stand” clips. Totally me. I don’t have time or ability for that crap!😂 FYI, there is a video where the new M4 fits a bit tighter in the SB 2. I hope there will be a new one soon
Hah thanks! I actually put it in my sketchboard pro in my new iPad video. I’ve been using it that way since I got it and the fit really isn’t bad at all.
Just got the Darkboard on sale at Amazon and I’m loving it. It makes the transition from the cintiq that much easier. Wasn’t too crazy about the handle at the top of the SBP and the DB being so lightweight was a huge bonus for me as I move around a lot. Although I am really digging that white color 🤔

I had one foot inside the home improvement store for plywood-you saved me. Jk. This is a great find. I’ve had my iPad for a while now; we’re both excited for this upgrade! 😊
Great video, I just switched form 2017 ipad pro to 2022 and the older version almost had a border like the drawing boards but smaller. I'm really happy with the upgrade but kind of miss it 😄
Thank you to bring this to my notice! I'm wondering which should I buy: Wacom cintiq or Ipad Pro. I have tried Ipad pro but it hasn't been ergonomic and I have arm/shoulder issues already. Maybe these might help?
They definitely make it way more ergonomic and it makes the iPad screen feel a lot bigger because you are no longer resting your hand on it all the time.
Currency disadvantages. In Malaysia these things costs a whopping MYR1,000 bucks with shipping. Just for a board that holds your ipad pro. I wish i can claim it under a business expense HA! :D Love the cool review nonetheless!
LOVE my original Sketchboard, but I definitely see some significant advantages to the new one. I'm gonna bet I put off buying it . . . then eventually buy one anyway. Maybe after the next iPad Pro release, so I don't have to buy another cradle. (That's one of the best things about the Sketchboards, by the way. Completely worth it.)
The crazy thing to me about these art boards is the lousy adjustments. They are still severely lacking in my opinion. I have a lap top board that my laptop sits on and it has about 6 varying degrees of adjustability. Very simply designed as well. When I’m drawing on my iPad I don’t want such a massive incline all the time and would prefer just a little angle. Most of the time I have to resort to using a book to rest the top half of my iPad on. I would love to have this product but still adding those legs that are set for one height is so insane to me. What a waste of an opportunity to have a more flexible range of adjustments. A big big miss.
I'd like one of these, but I use PC pen displays. These drawing/painting board-inspired designs are exactly what I've been looking for. I guess it'll be a while before they start making proper ones with adjustable Length, Height, and depth. I don't think weight should matter, either
sup Chris, I like your way to explain! I have a question; as you know in this year new iPad is coming and we just wanna know, is there any improvements in procreate? More layer capacity, out of canvas no remove the layer, etc. ? Do you have any knowledge?
Thanks! I know the new iPad Pro will have the M3 which is more powerful than anything Procreate could throw its way. A lot of that stuff comes down to how the apps utilize all the power though. I mainly work in Fresco over Procreate and layers aren’t limited like they are in procreate.
Got any updates on how you like it months later? I got the sketch board pro after watching your review a few months ago while I do love it I wish it could stand vertical
In the previous video you mentioned the ipad can easily slip out of the sketchboard pro when carrying it around the house. Does the sketchboard pro 2 fix that issue?
That was mainly user error as I found out you aren’t supposed to carry it from the hole at the top. And I usually carry it with the iPad facing me so I haven’t had any issues with either since I first started using the original.
Yeah, I get it, but this is a very niche product for a niche audience. So production numbers are going to be dramatically lower than they would be for a regular iPad case which drives up the price per item dramatically.
It seemed about the same with my old iPad. I’m using it with the new iPad now and it’s perfect because the new one is slightly bigger making it fit a bit more tightly

I was considering one of these pads but the prices are at least double of what I feel like paying for something like this :/ (even as a business expense lol) Wondering if it's a result of a demand (unlikely), productions cost (maybe, if they are selling very few of these), or a niche product up-charge. Probably my overall frugality talking.
@@chris-piascik Not my case. I opted for a rugged non-apple case because it was built for durability and 1/3 the cost of the cheapest apple option. Because of that, it is a royal pain to remove my ipad.
well it is interesting...but stupidly expensive for a board......but I did buy one...I am in Canada...so exchange rate is ludicrous....but it is okay. It is well made, well designed...the one comment I would say is the legs need a better clip in to keep them in place...Otherwise very satisfied. More than I thought I would be. So not bad...and size of Sketchboard Pro 2 is perfect. Thanks!
Well there is the removable rubber cradle, the aluminum legs, and the overall design. I guess it’s a little pricey, but it is a very niche market so I imagine production numbers are pretty low. New product development and production costs add up very quickly.
Anyone looking for a cheaper version of the sketchbook pro .aliexpress has a knockoff version of the sketchbookpro 1 with zugu case adjustable height stand for 60$cad but 60$shipping but if I ordered the sketchbook pro it’s around 200$cad.something to think about if your strap for cash like me.bye the way Chris ,i enjoy your content.keep doing your thing.
I've got a sketchboard pro that I really don't use as much as I should. I found it a little too big and heavy in the end. I was really tempted by the dark board because I like the look of the extra depth for sitting it in my lap for some couch drawing, but I didn't pick one up in the end. Considering how little I use my actual sketchboard pro, I don't think I'll be rushing to make any new purchases, but I'm excited to see more development for these kinds of products.
He has covered different iterations of this (which he clearly also mentioned in this video😒). You could easily answer this question by looking at his list of posted videos, so why ask? You’re giving passive-aggressive troll vibes. If he wants to cover the same topic multiple times, he can do that.
No, the sketchboard pro 2 just came out. I did make a video about the DarkBoard and original sketchboard pro but thought it made sense to include them again in comparison. I did include some b-roll from that other video. So maybe that’s what you recognized?
for me the price is rly "urgh", but also the selfmade from foamcore just dont look "clean". 🤣(goes for all Videos i saw on making one) Woodskills and Tools are out of Reach for me 2, i guess waiting for a Sale it is xD
Might be good to wait and see if you’re planning on upgrading, I will be. But most people won’t need to upgrade if they purchased in the last few years. I’m still on a ‘21 M1 iPad Pro and it’s more than adequate. I’m just upgrading because I want to and it’s business expense. That said, it may still fit with the same cradle as I think the overall dimensions won’t be changing, the bezels should just be getting thinner. We’ll likely have to wait until next month to find out. The plus for the sketchboard is that you can swap the cradle instead of of buying a full replacement.
$130!?!?!?!? I just bought a handheld device with a screen for less than $40 that plays n64 and Dreamcast games. That thing has a circuit board and a screen. This costs as much as a the fancy high-tech juicer with a gazillion attachments my fiancee just bought wtf!?!?!? I'm flabbergasted.
Hah it is a bit pricey, but it’s a much smaller market so production numbers are pretty low which would make the price per unit go up a lot. There’s videos out there showing how to make DIY versions.
So I bought the Sketchboard Pro 1 a few weeks before they announced they were selling the sketchboard pro 2. I was kinda pissed they did not announce it before going to market as this is a big investment. When I reached out to them, they didn’t extend any commercial gestures and compared themselves to Apple and iPhones, who supposedly never disclose their iterations beforehand (lol)… it was one of the most ridiculous customer service email. Full of themselves. I hope they read comments because they suck. I obviously do not recommend the brand. And yes, the product looks like a good idea, while it’s not.
The price on these things is egregious. Accessories like this used to cost a tiny fraction of the devices we use. This kind of product is the ultimate grift. They may be useful, but I’d rather make my own.
I think calling it the ultimate grift is a bit of stretch. If they were trying to pull off some sort of money grab they’d most certainly target something with wider appeal. This is a very niche product for a niche audience. As a result production numbers are going to be dramatically lower than they would be for a regular iPad case. There’s also the plastic mold, the rubber mold, the construction of the aluminum legs. All of this stuff gets pricey and when you aren’t ordering massive quantities the price per item goes way up. To be honest I wouldn’t be surprised if they were making just a small fraction per unit… but that’s just speculation based on my somewhat limited experience having things produced.
@@chris-piascik I hear you, but I’m not sure I agree that the market is so small it necessitates costs this high. I think there are far more digital artists now than there were artists in general 15 years ago, but even then there was a decent market for certain tools. There aren’t a ton of products like this one, so there’s also very little competition. We can agree to disagree, but I think they’d do just fine profit-wise charging $60-$75 for these things. I’m happy to accept I am wrong if there is information that demonstrates that.
I really wanna like these boards but they are so big. Kinda defeats the purpose of being able to draw anywhere when you have a big piece of plastic with a hole in it. Oh and that price is a bit ridiculous.
Darkboard has made casual drawing so much more ergonomic for me. It comes with a protective sleeve too. I’ve also used Velcro to attach a usb c hub dongle to the back.
100 $ that's stupid u can build a custom easel for half the price and left over money buy a stand for when u are on your couch which is 10% of the time at most. A custom easel can be used for everything paper, space for extra tablets mine is light and big enough for canvases and multiple tablets adjustable to any height I even made a holder for my tea that's the beauty of custom.
Those prices are absolutely absurd. Get a $5 sketch board and glue a $5 ipad case to it, $5 neck strap if desired. Can cut all the holes you want in it to tune it to your exact preference. Mount a $10 laptop cooling pad to it if your ipad runs hot. Don't spend $100+ on a stupid plastic board
I’ve never seen a drawing board for $5, but aside from that. If I glued an iPad case to it, it wouldn’t sit flush so it would defeat the point. It also wouldn’t have adjustable height. I think a more realistic estimate for a cheap drawing board, a cheap iPad case and extra strong glue would be $40-$50 conservatively. But as I mentioned that wouldn’t even yield the same results. My time is worth more to me than that anyway. I’d rather just pay a bit more for setup that works perfectly right away. It’s also something I use every single day, so in the that regard the price is pretty minimal.
🫨😰I was sweating the whole video when you were moving the 2nd version around with the iPad still in it. I have the 1st version and would never ever do that, because it could pop out of the Artboard so easily. I'm assuming with the way you were doing that without concern, that that's not an issue anymore with this new version?
It’s fairly secure, but I wouldn’t move it around with the iPad face down… or if my iPad wasn’t several years old. I would say it’s equivalent to the first one. Imagine the cradle is mostly the same if not completely.
It's great when you can write something off as a business expense. You justify using that credit card, for that price tag, pay it off later, and you get a little return for it on your taxes.
A business mentor told me decades ago "Do what you do best, pay people to do the rest." This applies to making this DIY. I have the skills to make one, I no longer have the tools or space, and earning the money to pay for one wouldn't take that much time, so just buy whichever and move on with your day.

@@unschooled_art you're implying my intent? i literally just asked a question. hop down off your soapbox
No, the sketchboard pro 2 just came out. I did make a video about the DarkBoard and original sketchboard pro but thought it made sense to include them again in comparison. I did include some b-roll from that other video. So maybe that’s what you recognized?
@@chris-piascik ahh b-roll that makes sense thank you.

@@chris-piascikhey chris when you got the 2024 pro did the sketchboard pro 2 marry up with it just fine?
@Sketchmedic yep! It was a bit more snug at first, but nothing concerning. I actually like that it’s less likely to slip out now.
@@chris-piascik awesome! Appreciate the insights man, fixing to switch completely from desktop to my pro so it helps.
for me the price is rly "urgh", but also the selfmade from foamcore just dont look "clean". 🤣(goes for all Videos i saw on making one)
Woodskills and Tools are out of Reach for me 2, i guess waiting for a Sale it is xD
😂
That Nip shot!😂 LOL so funny you caught that in edit😅
Hahah
Plot twist… Apple is redesigning the new iPad form factor so better to hold off on buying one of these.
You couldn't return it?
@@loveArtnotFood nope. They told me too bad so sad.
How long was this after you bought it? It depends on the country but usually there is a 14 - 30 days return policy by law @@rosielele
What a bummer!!!
@@chris-piascik lol! If you could pick one would you pick the sketchboard pro 2 over the Benks infinity Pro Stand?
@@chris-piascik You’re right, though. Ultimate grift is a bit of an exaggeration.
Sold me your old dark board 😊 I got and ipad 12... say yes please and give me a nice discount cause it is used ítem.
Good vid as always bro
It would be pricey to ship!
Also, I’m going to keep the DarkBoard.
Maybe simply print the cover according to yourself :E
I mean, of course it’s according to me. Who else would it be according to? E
Hey how do you know how long I spend on the couch?
Sell me your old dark board 😊 I got and ipad 12... say yes please and give me a nice discount cause it is used ítem.

The price doe? Can't justify to pay this much for piece of plastic.
I just find myself thinking about how much value I’m getting out of it. It is mostly plastic but it’s very well designed.
In germany it costs 160€ 😂
Yikes!
God bless
How does that help? It sticks out.
no offence but The video editing is a mess. I found myself confused.
No offense taken. What’s messy? And what are you confused about?
Christ is King
Thank you but I’m just a normal guy
🫨😰I was sweating the whole video when you were moving the 2nd version around with the iPad still in it. I have the 1st version and would never ever do that, because it could pop out of the Artboard so easily. I'm assuming with the way you were doing that without concern, that that's not an issue anymore with this new version?
I think it is. He just does that for the video to make it funny/interesting. Which works.
😂😂
