Sounds great! I taught myself to play on a 12 string I traded a tent for when I was a kid and love that jangle. Now I've got 5 Rics and way too many other guitars. Can't wait to check out some more of your videos.

Thank you so much! There's just one mistake in your comment. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TOO MANY GUITARS! Ha ha. I'm up to 19 with 3 out of commission. So 16 that I play regularly, and already planning what I want next. I'm leaning toward another Les Paul, chambered with P90's. I keep looking at Tele's but I have 4 already. (all different).

@@johnbovie9203 lol, you're correct. I've actually only got 4 Rics (2 - 12 strings, a 6 string and a bass), an Epiphone Sheraton (335 copy), 3 SGs, one with P90s, a few Les Pauls, 2 with Bigsbys and one with P90s, a Jimmy Page Dragon Telecaster, 5 acoustics, a Flying V (possibly the coolest guitar I've got) and a few more. My wife would rather I had a lot less but oh well!

Thanks for walking us through, John. Great sound! I was at a mate's place last night and he dragged out his 12-string acoustic and the sound was beautifully unique to all the other guitars on offer. I'm a leftie and take your comment below about the relative rarity of LH to RH guitars for sale. On Gumtree here in Australia the ratio is about 60:1. I'm going to take a look at the site you've suggested, as l feel the need to own one of these beauties because...well, just because. Cheers mate!

I bought a chickenBacker a while ago, I just ordered a real set of Rickenbacker 12 strings from a Rickenbacker store in New Jersey called Pick of the Rick. Mine sounds really bad right now, intonation and trying to keep it in tune. The intonation is easy to fix but I think the new strings will really make it.

That's not a master volume, it's called the mixer and is another series volume control for the neck pickup to compensate for the high pass filter on the bridge pickup which cuts the volume down a bit, this control is there to compensate for this ... or so I'm told ... the infamous mystery control and then there's the old ric-o-sound/standard misunderstandings. I love Ric's.

  • @karmicselling4252

Your RickBOCHer appears to provide and excellent approximation to a RickeBACKer.
Might have already been mentioned but the small fifth control knob is called a "Blender". It offers a range of tones depending on position and whether the neck or neck / bridge pups are selected. It should not be in circuit when bridge pup is only selected.
It looks like your guitar is strung in the traditional 12 String arrangement with octave strings closer to the top of the neck rather than the usual (non traditional) Rickenbacker arrangement. This does have a subtle impact on the sound.
Also spied an additional output jack on the bottom of your guitar. Is it a dummy or has it been wired to offer a stereo output ( a la Ric-O-Sound)?
Getting really close to the famous chime jangle sound a la Harrison and McGuinn requires the use of flat wound nickel plated guitar strings, a Vox AC30 amplifier and some heavy compression. Otherwise, even with a real RIC you basically end up with an electricfied 12 String acoustic guitar. That last 10% makes a huge difference.
Anyway, Thank You for the great review. And did I detect a hint of Rush's Limelight at one point?
The world's not quite back to where it was a couple of years ago. But we are getting there. Stay Safe.

12 string Rickenbecker Not only Sir Georgie's guitar, but also an independent musical instrument. Today there are no guitars that would have all the individual corrections to the scale of the instrument for all 12 strings, this is what limits its use with other amplifier modes.
I think the Chinese comrades will read my remark and improve the instrument to a higher level. Voros with bridges has already been resolved, the issue of nuts for octave strings needs to be investigated. And you need to make changes to the circuit - you need a sustainer in the neck position, it will synchronize the vibrations of thin strings (they are not matched and therefore sound softer than we would like), and significantly improve the sound.

This has the double stacked vol/tone and the lipstick pickups with the Nat Daniel wiring scheme. Great guitar for $399 new at GC. But it doesn't sound like a Ric 12. Only a Ric body shape/design gets that Byrds/McGuinn tone.

Would you know where to get a Ric 660-12TP from China? I see them on A-express but have no idea if what's being shown is really what will show up at the door.
Not bad on the Ric tone and the build except the bridge is not correct. The original style has a wider foot print in that it's a wide base plate with four Allen screws that sit on the plate making for a broader tone transference. The tune-o-matic is not a bad bridge but I think the original style is better. These can be found from Korea I've heard.
From what I can see your Ric is not strung the Ric way with the octave strings on the bottom.
Critical IMO to get that Byrds' tone.
Many players are looking to China for guitars since the use of CNC machines and more affordable prices are where China is at these days. For those losing hope that Rickenbacker would offer a lower priced version of their 12's are looking for a custom made solution from a shop in China.

@@johnbovie9203 John, thanks much for getting back. Yes you've restrung the 12 as a "standard" setup with the octave on top. It's one's choice really.
I don't have Wechat but I was recently in contact with another builder there and they had their chat system tied onto their site. Sadly they declined taking on a custom build stating they have never built one (a Ric) before and would need a sample. They have a proper factory and build some nice guitars.
Would your guy have a site with a chat system? There MUST be some way to get in touch. Sadly YT disabled private chat long ago.
There's this thread on Offset guitars started in 2018 and it was about a westerner going to a China guitar factory and posted many photos but the photos are not visible anymore and for some reason the thread is inactive from the OP. Point being the thrust to find a luthier that knows and can is strong.
We're starting to call you Capt. Kirk...to boldly go where no man has gone before... LOL.
To my ears there's a semblance of a Ric tone in your guitar. Perhaps a bridge/pickup swap would take things in another direction. If those pickups are the Korean models, they might be humbuckers not single coils like the originals and don't have the round AlNiCo pole pieces extending from the bottom of the shell.
The smaller knob is a blend/mixer that controls the volume of the neck pickup to balance with the bridge. The owner's manual explains how that works. Once the balance is set it acts as a "master volume."
A vintage wiring with a capacitor would be the addition of a 0.0047uF cap at the bridge pickup to get that '60's McGuinn sound (in addition to the caps already on the tone pots and BTW the pots and cap values have a vintage requirement). It (the 0.0047uF cap) cuts some of the lows out. And if a compressor is used you're in Tambourine land. It's trendy to add the 0.0047uF cap swapping the blend pot with a push/pull 500Ω audio taper pot like one made by CTS so the 0.0047uF cap can be switched in/out to get modern/vintage settings.
Anyway would really like to keep in touch on this. The Ric I'm interested in is a solid body neck-thru. All birdseye maple as in the original design.
      Scotty out.

However your guy is connected with the luthier(s), your holding proof of results is as good as it gets so far. I've been through three (3) companies and so far they've all bailed. You are the closest to success on this I've come across and with a Ric at that. It would be highly appreciated if you could spread some of that magic you have of being there where the action is and getting things done. And there's no language barrier. And that you thought to make a video featuring your Ric 12. How cool is that?
      Please keep me informed.
      I don't mind the wait.
There's such an interest in getting a Ric from China. There's this American luthier on YT. His channel is Backbeat Vintage. He's into Hofner Beatle bases. But he just had to have a Ric 325 like Lennon had. He made a video entitled "Rickenbacker 325 replica build review. Rickenbacker copy. " You might want to watch it to see what he did. He ordered it from China and wondered if he'd ever get the guitar. And this guy EJ is a purist on his Hofners.
I have spec lists with photos in English and Chinese already to go to make things easier. The build I'm considering will be based on a Ric but not have all the accessories. The body, neck, headstock, circuitry, bridge and pickups will pretty much be as per the Ric model I mentioned but without a pickguard, the triangle inlays and the "fang" headstock truss rod cover. It will be somewhat subdued. The control cavity will be accessed from the back of the guitar. I'm after the sound mostly from that body style and wood configuration. With everything being in China, I would think they would have access to many species of tone wood.
I have two guitars made by SX in China; a Thinline Tele and a 5 string copy of a Warwick bass and they play well and sound good on recordings.
Do you have videos for your Mayones and the Sig Tele?

I've grown to really love this guitar, however, the tuning pegs are trash and you should either order upgraded tuners or replace them as soon as you get it. The sound is very authentic, the price is low and I'm really surprised at how much I want to gig with it. And of course being a lefty only seems to be a problem in the west.
