      Hey Jason! First I want to thank you for these tutorials... they've been immensely helpful. At 1:12 how are you selecting all of the back? my lines/brushes are still separate after using pathfinder to remove the overlapping lines...
      I am unable to select all of the back at once... did I miss a step where you united all the pieces again?

      We do unite the lines after doing the clean up step. The divide will make a crazy amount of little pieces after editing. The next thing to double check is your settings for the magic wand tool. Double click and change the tolerance down under 5. The default settings will tend to grab everything.

    Awesome tutorial series. Thank you very much. You make the shadow/highlights part look so easy to do but I'm really struggling on this. The problem is, I don't know exactly where there have to be shadows and where highlights. I know you can imagine a sun but still, it's really hard. I don't know why.

      Sounds like just the placement is where you are having troubles- let me know if you would like me to expand on the knife tool too. Pretty basic placement so you can also google light source on ball for a reference image. I would also pause the video further along and mark X on location of highlights/shadows(on a new layer so you can delete it)
      Upper Left side will get the most light. You can simplify each shape and put a highlight at the top left. Shadow goes on the opposite side. So these are the easy ones- cast shadows you have to picture the character in 3D and see whats popping out or in front. There is also refracted light that is wrapping around the character- notice the shadow doesn’t hit all the way to the edge. You can leave that part out.

      Thank you very much. Technically I'm able to do all parts. You explained it very well :) Placement and also color of the shadows/highlights is my main problem. I think I will recreate some of your sketches and try to get a feeling for the shadows/highlights. How do you know which colors to use? Thank you very much.

    3:00, I gotta remember to do that after finishing Live Paint. (Object>Expand>Ungroup 3x)

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  7 років тому

      As long as you test out and click on an individual object or just keep ungrouping until you can't ungroup anymore. You'll find out pretty quickly when we try the knife tool and the whole character changes color :)

    At the 4:21 marker, you mentioned Shift-X should be Control-X for Window users.

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  7 років тому

      I'm using a Windows PC so I'll check to see if I goofed or switched the wrong word in the video. Shift X is to toggle stroke and fill. Control X is Cut.

      I was cutting and pasting so yes- Control/Command X (Edit- Cut)

      Thank you for what you are doing. For my self, I can't believe how good it looks after following your directions.
      My roots are in Marquetry(wood inlay) going from an Exacto-knife, Jewelers fret saw, Laser machine with the use of Corel Draw to a Cricut Maker machine cutting paper thin wood within its own program, Design Space employing SVG's.
      If you could go about the ways to changing an Illustrator vector to an SVG it will help me a lot because Design Space does not recognize it after uploading even with the tag SVG within Illustrator.

    So your lines became shape?then live paint?there’s no live paint in illustrator app, how can I color in the illustrator app on iPad Pro, please?thx

    Little confused at the 5:00 min mark when you are using the pathfinder tool to unite - you are on your finished brushes layer that you just created with all other layers locked, but in the video you say you are selected all of the green and the shapes just made with the live paint and uniting them? - just confused because you were not on the flat colors layer when you said that but on the strokes/brushes layer? Which did you unite as one shape, the brushes or the flat colors? Thanks!

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  6 років тому +1

      The fill areas and final line are still separate from live paint. So all of the darks (finished line) are united. You can see in the mouth that there are still separate shapes. I am on the finished line layer when I select and unite all of the darks. Flat color layer step comes after. If you hide the color layer so you can just look at the finished line you will be able to see the unite a little better.

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  6 років тому +1

      Note that the color layers don't have the linework/darks anymore. You can tell a little from the thumbnails in the layers panel. It really isn't a make or break if you don't unite the darks.
      Also a bonus troubleshoot- double check you have expanded your live paint and ungrouped it at that step to separate and unite)

    Hi, I just installed Illustrator, and I have no idea what to do, I would like to learn how to turn my drawings into vectorized images, the tools are a bit confusing, different from Photoshop that has a simple layout, does anyone help me?
    (I don't have a tablet)
    (Sorry for the bad english, i'm brazillian)

    You never say what to do with all of the ungrouped layers from the expanded live paint bucket

      When you move toward values and cutting shapes, you will want your shapes ungrouped. I tell you early to troubleshoot.

    Hey Jason....I followed your channel for a while then had a brief pause. I apparently have an older Dropbox link. I tried to resubscribe but it seems I can't get an email from your site after I plug in my address. Any thoughts on this or how it could get corrected?
