Now, if cost is an issue, keep in mind that the Hahn's Macaw is likely to be half the price of the African Grey parrot.
Otherwise, they do have very different personalities, as far as what I have experienced. Hahn's Macaws are cute and cuddly! Emerald is affectionate and ALWAYS wants to be with you. Always. Send her off flying or put her on a perch and she makes her way back onto your shoulder.
She's smart, sweet and talks in a 'parrot' voice. Does tricks too!
Our African Greys were adopted as adults. That means they aren't as bonded to us. Had we raised them, I'm sure they would be closer to being an affectionate parrot, but African Greys are not known for being cuddly. Instead, the word I'd use to describe them is aloof.
African Grey parrots are keen; they see everything and know to call, "Come here!" when the dog's name is called. They do like pets, although sometimes they pull the 'bait and switch.' turning head skritches into finger bites! But their ability to mimic sounds is legendary and their personalities are fun. African Grey parrots aren't terribly loud parrots, which is great, but when the rest of my flock settles at night, they sometimes are most vocal. A thief breaking into the house in the dark would swear that there was a person - or ghost - talking to them in the room!
If I wanted a more cuddly and bonded parrot, I would feel that a Hahn's Macaw's red shoulders would be more likely to provide this kind of connection. If I wanted a great mimic and one of the smartest and most mysterious parrots that aren't too loud but may not want to be on my shoulder all day, I'd go with the striking red African Grey tail.

Having recently lost my Hahns after 19 years, I can definitely agree that they are affectionate, adorable little velcro companions and if I have the chance I would get another one. Miss her terribly! 💔

African Grey's helped with a rescue shelter they are funny, load and very temperamental. But so lovely.

I had a Grey for years. He was perfect! Loveable, funny, talkative, I could do anything with him. One night we had company and he fell madly in love with the guy who was visiting. The night went well and was calm however the next morning my Grey all the sudden became completely afraid of me as though he was being murdered each time I went near him, cleaned his cage, etc. Prior to that night, I could do anything with him! He's never changed! This happened out of the blue and overnight! No reason why!

@@ParrotBliss Yes and he screams bloody murder whenever I go near him. He also shakes when I walk by his playstands. I ignore him and handle him anyhow as he's never bitten me. I never had a problem handling him, he was cuddly, sweet, would sit on me for hours. The night that company left, he's never been the same and I never left the room so I know nothing happened, but he was smitten with the guy who was visiting. He's ok once he settles down, but it's heart breaking to hear him freak like I'm the big bad monster. Nothing changed except for the company that came for a few hours. So weird. My Avian vet just said, "that's a Grey for you!" He talked nonstop before too, but now only talks when no ones in the same room. He's incredibly smart and can remember a phone conversation verbatim that he heard a month ago. I'm lost and can't figure him out, but it's embarrassing as I'm sure people think that I beat him. He'll actually run across the room from me.
@@baublesanddolls He probably thinks you drove away his love and is mad and scared of you. I have a CAG. She’s never done that to me but I get their mentality. She once fell in love with a male friend who came over but thankfully was normal when he left.

So, you are getting a Hahn's? Do you have another parrot? They need a lot of time and attention. I reccomend either 2 or have another similar-sized parrot.
How much does your Hahn’s weigh? Mine just turned a year old but still only weighs about 145g. He is not a big eater. How can I put some weight on him?
Its sometimes very difficult to listen to you and understand what you are saying with often too loud birds in the video.
Maybe you should pick one of your birds for a video and go with him into a quiet room where no other birds are.

@@ParrotBliss gizmo heart and liver test came out good. I going to do one more test on him, where they take out feather from follicle to test it. Vet said he had one Hahn macaw that plucked and this test showed he had some bacterial infection or something. Hard to remember. We will see hopefully Friday. Starting to give him a bath 3 times a week too to see if this helps and he is getting 9 new toys today so hopefully will help. May try getting red palm oil for him eventually and vet is going to give him some omega 3 liquid for him. Hopefully something will help. Yeah, but his blood work is good.
Lol we only got a mini macaw from a shop a week ago a but very interesting video as yes I can relate to your comment on the macaw being so affectionate and looking to be with you all the time. Ours is only 3 months old and not as energetic as yours.. he's content once on our shoulder or with us. Loves human contact, almost feel he seeks that contact with us. Started target training and he picks up quickly but is is much slower like he's analysing and thinking of what he wants to do before doing it. He is soooo gentle... we were a bit scared at first with the size of his beak as we also have a green cheeck conure who only now is kinda stopping to bite but we learned a good bit from each other. None of this with him. Even picking a treat from my hand, is = so delicate and gentle.
Our Max looks very young as is feathers are nowhere near as neat and yours and the red on the elbows of his wings only have small patch of red. He calls a lot for attention and tend to flap a little his wings when he's on a surface like the table or my desk...but no expert. Can't comment on African grey but these are our findings with our Max our mini macaw.
3 months seems very young! Are you still hand-feeding? If not, you may still want to offer some baby formula because he's young. It would give you a chance to bond with him in another way, if you chose, and it gives him the feeling of being supported and having the need to be fed met. It's only leads to greater security and a greater connection in my experience.
When parents are young, they tend to be more quiet and less fighting. Once they are like teenagers, they get more energetic. I expect Max will become a little more vocal and more active in a couple of months to a year even. Max sounds wonderful. Since he's so young, be sure to be patient with the target training. After all, he still getting his bearings. I expect that he is still a little clumsy and not flying super well since this is true with all the parrots I've taken care of as babies. He sounds totally wonderful, I hope he and your green cheek makes good friends! Keep me updated!
@@ParrotBliss Thank you for your response. Well we're no expert but the shop owner told he was 3 months so we have to take his word for it.. Yes you are correct he doesn't fly well but does fly to us when we call him... most of the time but he needs to think about it... he loves being with us... He makes that little sound as he moves his head up and down slowly ... almost all the time ... even when on our shoulder. For now we feed him veg and fruits with a tiny amounts of seeds.
We keep the seeds for the training, in particular the pumpkin seeds which he loves...
What kind of food you'd recommend we feed him... He doesn't eat as much as the conure who would eat the house if she could lol.
@parrot bliss, we have followed your advice on the food and gave him egg base food for young bird. he loves it... but we are slowly giving him the odd slice of apple or grape or pepper to him also. Thank you for your advices. The bonding is no issues he flies straight to me but have been getting our daughter to spend more time with him also to bond with her. His flying is nowhere near as good and accurate as our conure who's made tons of progress on that front since we got her, with him banging into windows twice but I guess it's part of their learning. Our conure doesn't fly in windows anymore. So we're continuing time outside the cage with us more and more. Our conure is not too happy with him and would go for him at the first opportunity.
I’ve been getting a lot of people asking this and I think the answer is definitely no but I was wondering what you thought of it is. Are mini macaws a good first bird?

What is the name of your book on Amazon? Also can you tell me which parrot is not flighty and not tempermental? I have lived with cockatoos. I have owned a brown headed parrot and currently own a parrotlet. The parrotlet is nippy and moody. I loved my brown headed parrot but they are very frail. I was thinking of a Meyers, Hahns, Green Winged. I want a velcro parrot and not nippy, nor tempermental not flighty like budgies and parrotlet. I also plan to do a lot of traveling with my parrot. I may get 2 if there larger. I would prefer 1. My parrotlet is a male and I dont want to deal with puberty again. But I didnt want to deal with egg laying. My budgie were females and laid eggs. Which parrot do you recommend? Will my parrotlet always be flighty and nippy?

Is a Nobilis Macaw very similar to a Hanh's macaw? The only difference I've noticed is different colored beaks.
I don't know if I've ever seen a Nobilis; yes, that is supposed to be the only difference. I see Hahn's Macaws but not Nobilis so I don't think you'll find one. If you do, you may want to get it because it's rare!
Which birds in your flock did in the past or at the moment chew/destroy fourniture, walls, floors? How do you keep it under control?

I live in Sweden and its hard to buy pellets here. Every shop offers seeds but what kind of pellets do I need to buy? For nymph parakeets or for African greys?
Your parrots should have pellets as part of their diet. I give Zupreem. In addition, they all need fresh vegetables. The African Greys need about 1/4 c of nuts every day (you can also use Palm or Coconut oil on their food instead). These parakeets (Budgies and Cockatiels) need Parakeet seeds (that's what they call it here), which is a millet based seed mix that does not have sunflower seeds. 3/4 Pellets, 1/4 nuts for the AG plus vegetables. Parakeets are less than 3/4 pellets, more than 1/4 seeds plus vegetables. :)
I reserve sunflower seeds for treats or training. Thanks for posting, Ronn!

I’d go for another hahns. That’s what we did. The African grey we have doesn’t care or communicate with the hahns. They’re just such different birds

@@ParrotBliss yes, we did. They lived in the same cage and got on so well . They were about two years apart. This was when we lived in Africa. We now live in the UK and have a new to us Hahns, she’s 11 and our African grey who is 21

Hi, I have a 1 year old Hanhs Macaw. We love him very much but he bites alot, doesnt like visitors coming to our house, if an unknown person to him comes over he will scream as loud as he could. It gets annoying at times. Any suggestions on how i can get him to stop biting us ? Please help.
Did you see my video on why parrots bite and the one on how to handle a biting parrot? They were recent. Why your Hahn’s is biting should determine how you handle him. Hahn’s Macaws are social, does he have a friend? Some of his nervous and screaming behavior may be do to not having a ‘full-time’ flock. My first guess is that he’s the only parrot. You may want to consider getting him a friend soon so that he bonds with another bird which will meet his social needs- which would likely calm him and let him and his friend bond with you in more enjoyable ways. LMK what you think.

Yes, a Hahn's Macaw is a little bigger, but their size is similar. I feel like a sun conure looks a little more sleek though.
I don’t know. I have a African Grey that if my husband is not in sight she will get off her cage and run around the house until she finds him. She’s like a Velcro bird. It’s quite funny.
Wow! She is in love with your husband! Yes, there are always exceptions. I bet she's cuddly with him too, right?
@@ParrotBliss nope she’s not snuggly at all. We kinda rescued her. She’s 4 and lived in a friends laundry room with zero toys and zero interactions. So when we got her she was awful. But she really came around ❤️

So, she looks to your husband for some safety and security. How long have you had her? Poor thing, I'm so glad you guys are taking care of her!

Which one’s louder? I’m originally from Brazil and bond a lot with Hahn’s Macaw but also ALWAYS loved African Greys so much. I have a lovebird which I handled and kinda gave me the experience of what’s owning a bird like, and I know it’s completely different since they are nothing alike. My parents had macaws but that was before I was born and then we had two Amazons, but that was back when I was a kid and I can’t really make up my mind on the choice of either a Hahns or an African Grey. The loudness is really a factor I’d like to consider. I know they are both loud, but which one’s louder? Thanks! Awesome video by the way
So glad you enjoyed the video and I love hearing about other people and the birds they have had. If you originally from Brazil, where do you live now? Undoubtedly a African Gray is much quieter. My hands macaw is noisy, but I don't think they are usually so noisy. African grays make funny and squeaky sounds. Hanhs macaws make typical parrot sounds. If you have hahns macaws, then the experience I expect you to have is a quieter gray .

Yes, the dander can be a problem. Mine definitely put off a lot of dander.
