      Judo adopted Aikido via the Goshin Jutsu kata during the 1950's... Kyokushin did similar in the 1960's... Krav in the 70's... it was just a matter of time before BJJ took on some Aikido too
      It gets no love from the MMA community but the grandmasters add it to the MMA-art anyway. It's like the broccoli of martial arts... the experts think you should eat your broccoli.

      @@asteriskcolon This kata was already part of traditional Ju-Jitsu, Kano whom taught Maeda was a teacher of koryu Kito Ryu and Tenjin Shin'yo Ryu styles in which he used for the foundation of the Nihondesu Kodokan Judo. In other words, the traditional Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is closer to the Judo created by Kano than the Judo that we known nowadays.

  • @MeroGrumble

    I value BJJ ground techniques but I have doubts regarding some standing techniques shown in this video. For instance:
    At 0:39 the final position seems fine if you bring directly your opponent onto the mat by slipping down your left leg (basically pushing him down with your body).
    However, if you remain in a standing position as in the video then the lock is applied but not "locked", your opponent can get out of it simply by rolling on the floor, which seems even pretty natural to do since it is encouraged by the armlock (bending him towards the ground). Then it's another story and the control is gone.
    In this position, I learnt to get my thigh right against his face (which prevent the rolling escape after which one can feel very dumb...).
    At 0:54 it's clear you have trouble applying the lock and I humbly think the reason is that the foot work is missing.
    In this position, I'm pretty sure it would be smoother if you had a 180° movement with your right leg: you end up side to side and you perfectly place to easily push his elbow up without effort (plus, you don't stand in his line of attack).
    I don't try to belittle you, I don't have the level nor the ego to do so. I appreciate that you made such video (thank you) and I only try to make a constructive comment. :)

    • @tjl4688
      @tjl4688 2 роки тому

      This is waki gatame from Judo - you are correct, you can absolutely drag your opponent to the floor instead of applying the lock from a standing position. If your opponent is hyper-aggressive or has a knife, by all means, drop to the floor and break the arm.
      You should be side to side in the standing americana lock, yes.

      I agree. Ive done limited aikido and have spent a year training a standup style of JJ. This is very simplified versions of that. Stuff that you can remember to do real quick and it can work. Some of those other standup arts locks are way to intricate and hard to remember and count to much on endless flow variations that frankly are almost impossible to remember. The simplicity is what makes the gracie jj standup so much more effecient than all that other crap.

      3 years JJJ, 2 years BJJ, 8 years Aikido, 10 years Karate speaking.

    • @smesh141
      @smesh141 5 місяців тому

      Probably because gjj proved it's ground in nhb and mma competitions and you can't say the same about 99,9% of other styles. But when it comes to self defence you are right to a certain degree, it's still too complicated and you can handle many of these situations with only one move - kick to the groin. Escapes from headlocks are useful too, because it happens often in real life situations. You need to find a balance, gjj schools still overcomplicate self defence, but it's obvious, they make money on it and won't tell that you can handle multiple situations with one move, because lessons would end after three classes 😅 On the other hand sport bjj schools teach you competition techniques and bad habits which are useless in mma and on the street. You don't really need too much to protect yourself in 1v1 situations on the street. If you would learn proper techniques and concepts for a one year you will be able to beat 99,9% people on this planet. Probably much more less when you are a woman 😅

      @yusetsuarez7972 8 років тому +1

      Yes, but It depends on some variables. Yes, if you took the time to practice enough before it happened so you developed the right reflexes (get any partner and practice). Yes, if your attacker is not as trainned, fast or as strong as you; if the attacker forgot to bring his friends that day; and finally, if you are not drunk, drugged or extremely tired from previous activity such as another fight. But the most important technique is to ALWAYS try to stay out of troubles by being aware of your surroundings.

      Nothing always works, and if you don't understand the technique, it's going to have a high risk of failure no matter how often you practice it.
      That said, all of these can work in real life but you have to have the wisdom to know which technique is right in which moment and some of these might almost never become relevant.

    • @AstralS7orm
      @AstralS7orm 7 років тому +1

      I find the ones vs gun especially laughable, any half decent gunman will pull the trigger on the move by reflex, you're getting shot, as you didn't get out of the line. Against a mugger, maybe someone who doesn't want to shoot you, might work, I wouldn't count on it.
      Knife strike defenses shown here are pretty bad. Where's the footwork? Static blocking a knife is bound to end badly if the opponent is stronger.

He said to draw and shoot as soon as he charged, none of us more than got the gun drawn... it's just not humanly possible, it defies what seems to be logic. But you should try the same drill. There's a really good knife vs gun video set that demonstrates that on Funker Tacticals page as well as UF PRO. There are a few videos of real life gun disarms and knife disarms with pure success here on UA-cam, and watch the world's fastest gun disarm, tell me you'd somehow pull the trigger on that guy.
