Reishi Mushroom- How to forage and prepare Ganoderma oregonense
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- The Reishi mushroom, as it is commonly referred to, is considered a highly medicinal mushroom by many and has been used in ancient Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Lingzhi, as it is called in China, is known as the "elixir of life" when prepared into a drink or tea. In this video Aaron Hilliard of Mushroom Wonderland shows us how to find this species, identify it, harvest it, process it and make it ready for a creamy mushroom hot chocolate treat.

If you’d like to dive a little deeper you can sign up for the 3 part intro to mycology course at the Olympic College in Bremerton. This is a non-credit class for personal enrichment. Aaron instructs the class in person, which covers what fungi is, how it grows, and its relationship to the world around it. The second class covers introduction to wild mushrooms and mushroom identification, and the third class goes over fungi cultivation and the history of mycological sciences and taxonomy. There is usually a foray into the woods for students who have attended the 3 classes. The classes are only offered in person right now, but they may be made into an online version soon. We will not accept any responsibility for negligence or accidental ingestion of poisonous mushrooms or plants. These videos are not intended to be a definitive field guide, but rather a starting point to become familiar with habitat, Everyone is encouraged to do their own studies, acquire literature or internet resources to safely and confidently identify wild foods before they eat them. When eating a new wild mushroom, it is advised to start with only a small amount, and make sure that it is fresh and that it is cooked thoroughly. Some mushrooms do not agree with certain individuals, and this is typically discovered on a case-by-case basis. All the ideas expressed in the comments should be taken with a large grain of salt. I don’t think there is any other field of study or science that has more misinformation being shared so freely and boldly. Mushroom Wonderland and Aaron himself have no opinion and neither encourage nor discourage the use of mushrooms containing mind-altering compounds. These mushrooms contain powerful chemicals and should be treated with a high level of responsibility. Any video topics on the habitat, natural distribution, and morphological features of psychoactive mushrooms portrayed on this channel are purely for scientific and educational purposes.

I really like the tutorial style videos you do. Thanks for the helpful info!
Thank you! Last year I found a HUGE OG reshi but without the knowledge on how to process it, I didn’t forage it and just admired the two foot wide conk. This year the same stump has produced three young OGs! I’ve been keeping a close eye on them and watching them grow. I’m definitely now ready to forage them!
Thanks for everything you do.
All my adult children are foragers, and we share all your videos back and forth.
On a side note, we use a vita-mixblender for reishi it does a much better job. As an added bonus it heats as it blends.
Thanks for this video. Found a second huge one this weekend and want to up my preservation and processing game. 👍
Love these types of videos Aaron great work! I have only found a handful of G. Organense here in Norcal but they are always ancient and too far gone to bring home. Hoping for better luck this season, I've been researching locations on iNat to improve my chances.
@@dcfromthev smart way to use tools like i naturalist!
Awesome! You're ever evolving! If I lived in your area, I would very likely take your course. But, I'm in Arcata. Northern California. 😊
Over in Washington Park on Fidalgo Island the mushrooms going crazy at present. what may be white chantarelles are as big as desert plates but fading now.
I didn't know the Reishis don't just stay around all the time as other shelf mushrooms seem to do. Glad to learn about processing those.
I've been enjoying your efforts for 3 seasons now, and thank you.
Rad video, friend. I super appreciate you sharing your knowledge!
@@Fragrantbeard thanks!!
Nice ! 😁👍
So awesome to see you find it!
PNW resident here: the one time i harvested reishi, i wish i took it home and processed it within a 24hr period. I had it in my car while camping (big dinner plate sized) and it was heating up like if it were fermenting. When i processed it at home 2 days later it smelled and there were parts that began molding or something. I had to cut those parts out and the rest like Aaron in the video, use dat elbow grease. Turned out great soaked in mason jars of costco tequila and costco vodka, fun drinking with friends lol
ALSO, if you shine a black light on reishi's glossy surface, the RED looks like the GREEN teenage mutant ninja turtles from the 90's movies!
Thanks Aaron! Mush love!
For alcohol soak i dried out the slices first in the oven until they were crispy. And in the mason jars I didn't start drinking any of them until at least 3 months later, flipping them upside down and again intermittently throughout that period
Thank you! Big fan of this video style of processing different fungi - maybe do a lion's mane next? Not sure if your cleaning process is any similar to cauliflower mushroom (if they are particularly dirty).
So can it be just dried after picking and used or does it need to be boiled/steamed first? And is boiling or steaming ok if one doesn't have a pressure cooker? Any idea how long to boil/steam?
Thanks very much! Sub'd and looking forward to watching more!
@@wingnutbert9685 Yeah they could definitely be dried first, and simmering for a couple/few of hours is supposedly equivalent to an hour in the pressure cooker.
Thank you I have all this fluff and jars lol I never thought of the pressure cooker
Reishi yum yum
Ganoderma Applanatum is more locally available here in the North of Ireland I love that every mushroom has compounds special to itself and most of them unknown to science and unknown effects on the human body. I dry it at 60c and powered/turn to fluff lol in a coffee grinder and soak 6hrs in about 80c nice mushroom tea
I was able to get a fine brown powder by separating the pores from conk of dehydrated slices, then coffee grinding those pores. A bit extra work but such a different end product
Aaron after chopping them how abt drying in the sun or not even directly in the sun. But just outside. It's warm here in Louisiana. An I find a lot of them. I also do a Tito's extract Lol
@@timmynormand8082 sun drying is ideal!
@@mushroomwonderland1 not sure you have Tito's in the PNW. It's an alcohol ( vodka) an thank you for ALL the vidios you teach me !!!!
Keep up the good work... also note.... there is a young man doing a mushroom YT cannel I believe called Mushroom Trails that does very good work and local to you... Maybe set up a collaboration with him... I assume you know the guy...would be a very good pairing I feel...plus his channel could use the boost ....
Hi Aaron!! I live in Mason County and I’m planning on registering to one of classes, would there be a class held during the week? I work for the local power company and I work weekends, my days off are Tuesday and Wednesday. Can you point me in the right direction?! Mush love brother!! Strength and honor my friend be well!! 👍🏿❤️💯
@@Hector-vx5yc The classes are on Wednesday evenings! Starting next week. Thanks for the kind words! It's not too late to sign up
Thank you for the video! We just did this after finding Reishi for the first time! Is the smell supposed to be so intense after pressure cooking?
What temp for the oven and how long?
Hi , I have a little question.
Cuz I live in Italy I can't find wild Ganoderma tsugae aka reishi but I usually found G.lucidum , G.resinaceum and G.applanatum so do you think this Ganoderma have the same property of the reishi? Or are there any differences?
Thanks 🍄
Hello, how can I contact you?
Lol the music
Back before i knew what these were there was a tree covered in them and i would use them to climb the tree
What's with all the ads? I might be DONE with youtube! I DON'T DO COMERCIALS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@timothylongmore7325 unfortunately that the way the world works, and especially the internet. If functions making money through advertising. UA-cam determines the advertising, not the creators. Few things in this world are truly free.
@@mushroomwonderland1 I wasn't b!tching at you. I really wan't to see your video but after about 4 commercials I commented and gave up. And I respectfully disagree that this is how the world works. It does not work for me
@@mushroomwonderland1 Sorry for the rants. Something has infested my youtube account. Almost every video loads infomerrcials instead of the video. Look forward to seeing your video , someday. Not a lot to be found on this topic.
What’s the ratio of powder per serving? I passed up so many earlier in the year and once I saw this vid a couple of weeks ago I decided to give it a try. So many were rotten, but I found a great one today and it’s in the instant pot now.
