  • This video will show how to remove the speedometer from a 3rd gen camaro or firebird. One of the most asked questions is how do I remove the speedometer cable or where is the clip or how do I release the clip, I show you how to do that here.

Do you know much about speedometer repair? In an '86, 140 mph version, the needle just spins super fast in complete revolutions.

If the dial revolves all the time then the spring is broken or not connected. ie speedometer cable revolving at 1,000 RPM is 60MPH on the speedometer dial. The speedometer has a revolving magnet inside an aluminum cup tied to the dial/pointer. A coil clock type spring forces the dial to 0 Mph at 0 RPM cable speed. The faster the cable revolves the more torque on the aluminum speed cup by the revolving magnet due to eddy currents. The torques balance at any speed. Thus road MPH is proportional to dial angular movement. If the dial revolves all the time then the spring is broken or not connected is my guess. At 30 mph the magnet revolves at 500 rpm, the spring force at the 30 MPH position balances the magnets.

What is behind the speedometer that would tap against the other components on my 2013 Camaro SS? I get this noise that no doubt is directly behind the speedometer. It sounds like two pieces of plastic tapping together. This only occurs when the car runs over rough spots in the road. For unknown reasons it will stop making the rattle for days at a time. Then, out of nowhere the rattle will begin again. Does anyone else have this problem? The Chevy dealership wants me to leave the car with them at too close to $100 per hour and no guarantee they will find the problem.
