  • This is the story of two HD disc formats that fought it out in the mid naughties, a battle similar to VHS vs Betamax in the 80s. But this was a battle that Sony (among others) were not going to lose.

PS3 killed off HD DVD... Sony was brilliant with including the Blu Ray player into the PS3.

But why did not Microsoft support HD-DVD instead? It would have been so cool if Xbox consoles had HD-DVD player built-in instead of regular dvd drive.

I stumbled across your video while searching info about the Beta vs VHS war of the 80s. Just wanted to say you did a VERY good job on this report - editing, presenting and performance on camera. I presume you wish to enter media at some point or even journalism? Your presentation style and inflection is excellent and your style is superb on camera (I work in the industry). So I hope you continue with this channel as you seem (to me anyway) to have a gift for this industry! As I sideline, I jumped on board the HD-DVD train when it was launched. I was sure it would be the winner, due mainly to one fact that you failed to mention. The pressing plants that made HD-DVD had to perform very little 're-tooling' to produce those discs & could produce DVD and HD-DVD on the same presses. Whereas the BluRay plants had to be rebuilt from scratch - just a side point. So you can see why I thought. being in the industry, HD-DVD would win. As you say, I forgot about the 'rental market' - just the same situation as the Beta vs VHS rental market in the 80s, same issue, different time! Thanks for reading! Post more videos man, well done!

Thanks for your comment and positive feedback! So at what point did you switch to Blu-Ray?
You are right, HD-DVDs were much easier to make than Blu-Ray discs, which was one of the reasons that HD-DVD launched first. I didn't include this in the video, however, mainly because I didn't want the video to drag on for too long.
It is interesting to look at the similarities between the format war in the mid 2000s and the video tape war in the 1980s. Both were incompatible, both were priced differently and both claimed to be superior. It will be interesting to see whether we'll have another video format war in the future or whether online streaming will eliminate this idea.
Again thanks for the kind comment - I really appreciate it :)

Bro, I couldn't agree more. I just watched his video on the CRAY super computers and couldn't believe that his subscriber count was so low so I subscribed and liked that one and now I'm gonna watch every video he has, starting with this one (which was excellent) and will continue to go down the list until I've watched, liked and commented on every one. This kid's gonna hit a million subscribers. It's just a matter of time...

Good video and nice, clear presentation. I would maybe have changed the placement of the mention of PS3 to before the retailers dropping HD DVD as I believe that this was THE factor that killed it off for good. Well, that and the AACS debacle - I suspect those three factors were the perfect storm to sing the HMS HD-DVD.

High definition video disc media is truly underrated. Modern streaming media is heavily compressed and is entirely dependent on an Internet connection. There's something magical about using analog means (using a physical video disc on an analog television) as opposed to using streaming media on a digital flat panel television. In my honest opinion, streaming media on a digital flat panel television is only useful for 4K and beyond. Even the HDMI standard itself was originally designed for higher resolution beyond the original high definition standard (720p60/1080i60/1080p24); HDMI has been able to support 4K (2160p24/2160p30) as far back as HDMI 1.4.
Also, there's something else that you missed: The original Wii was not only incapable of playing either disc format; it was incapable of high definition output altogether. The console had similar hardware to the previous generation of consoles and was still limited to standard definition (480i) over composite (the Wii was technically capable of 480p over component, but the component connection is designed for high definition).

I was in the Blu ray camp due to it's capicity to hold more data and superior sound. Being an engineer in my opinon it wasn't a question which was better format. However there were very strong advicates like Paramount studios ( Who liked the cheaper production cost to upgrade some of it's DVD to HD DVD production lines, big businesses who wanted to milk HD-DVD and a few years later make the upgrade to a Blu Ray like technology. That would of milked the customers twice within a short few years again. Much as what they doing with 4k now. The technology and the processing power already there for manufactures to creat 8K content but they will hold of 4 - 5 years until everyone got upgraded to 4k TV, Players, and Media channels. around 2023 - 2025 8K will be pulled off the self dusted off and introduced as a revolutionary technology. That is how business works. By mid-late 2007 it was pretty evindent that HD - DVD was losing the battle. From rental to purchasing and a birilliant move from sony to include PS3 Blu ray player. ( Sony actually lost some money on their first generation of PS3 due to adding Blu Ray player & Having a backward compatible actual hardware to play ps1 & ps2 games. In the scond generation of PS3 the chip was dropped and there was a software emulator in it instead which drove down PS3 cost.) Sony Knew that adding Blu Ray player to an allready expensive PS3 would lose them higher profits in the short run but Sony will reap the benifits from a dominating Blu Ray in the long run. They didn't want to lose another format war again. However Toshiba did not want to admit defeat in October 2007. They started selling players with free HD DVDs and around Christmas 2007 there were big bundles of movies added free if you picked HD-DVD. Toshiba also banked on half the stuidos backing HD-DVD but in reality it was 4 vs 5 out of 8 studios. 7 backed one format and 1 backed both waiting out the winner. Warner Bro were printing in Blu ray and HD-DVD format. After the poor Christmas sales to add instult to injury on the 4th of Jan 2018 Warner bro announced that it will no longer support HD-DVD and will only continue with Blu ray production. This was finally the time when Toshiba holding on to their format against all odds throw in the towel. It was pretty evindent it will either be a slow death as more studios and companies step by step drop HD-DVD support or cut the loses and finally admit defeat and pull out. In Mid febuary this report came out >> " Toshiba is widely expected to pull the plug on its HD DVD format sometime in the coming weeks, reliable industry sources say, after a rash of retail defections that followed Warner Home Video's announcement in early January that it would support only the rival Blu-ray Disc format after May. "

I also did the same. It wouldn't be until 2011, when I bought my first Blu-Ray disc, when I bought a laptop computer to play Blu-Ray discs. I was initially going to buy HD DVD, but decided to wait, since DVD was still strong. Despite Blu-Ray winning the format war, I hear Sony feels that they still lost, because they didn't factor in that movies depreciate in value overtime. The mass marketing also led to getting lower royalities. Now, some people are skipping owning physical copies of movies, that streaming services are eating away at their royalties. As for TV shows being released on disc, very few TV shows are being released on Blu-Ray. Most continue to be released on DVD, along with movies, that Blu-Ray hasn't fully caught on.
I heard that for the next format war, if physical formats continue, that the next format war will be on memory cards, once it gets perfected to read video off of it in HD quality.

I initially went with HD DVD because of Sony's prior failures like the Betamax, mini disc, super audio cd etc. I figured that this would be another medium gone wrong. Boy did I miscalculate that one. I still remember watching King Kong on my Xbox 360 HD DVD player and marveling at how great it looked. I actually bought a combo player by Toshiba that played both formats. Anyone else go down the same path I did based on the same information?

Why couldnt Blu Ray and HD DVD both continue existing simultaneously without one of them having to die? Now that HD DVD is dead, all those who invested in an HD DVD player and HD DVD movies threw their money away. With video games, I like having the choice between PS4 and Xbone. Yea, not sure that I agree with that. I think that when sony lost the VHS / betamax battle they started buying up film studios and distributors. Then they could control the format that they were released on, hence microsoft only managed to gain a small percentage of the film market.
Sony had learnt from their previous VHS/Betamax war mistake & microsoft had not even got out of the starting gate, always looked like a foregone conclusion to me, if you can't sell the goods, then you can't win the war....................

I never invested a penny into HDDVD and told everyone I knew to run from it. HDDVD is 9gb disc and BR was 50gb disc. pppfff. To fit 1080p on a 9gb disc means lots and lots of compression. You can not put a 22mbps Video on 9gb and then to also include HDaudio when 5.1 uncompressed is 4gb+ audio track. Playstation did help a lot in better more BR players out there. A lot of families only put the video games on the main family TV. Families were thrilled to use the video game as BR players!

Blu ray streamed stereo pcm to non compatible recivers as most of the movies come in PCM or dts master audio.. it is too big for FHD and too small for 4k.. the truth is.. they should had an agreement to keep Blu ray as a test until 4k has properly developed.. this way they could both coexist and aim to specific needs.
