Great video Wes! It was nice to see your collection of HD-DVD's. The format was was a very exciting (and frustrating) time for movie buffs. I remember when Blu Ray officially "won" and I ended up buying my first player. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I found a cheap HD-DVD player and explored that format as well. I'm getting into various "dead" formats lately as well, especially laserdisc & VHS. Absolutely nostalgic for collectors. Thanks for the vid man! Keep up the great work. :)
I have well over 500 HD DVDs and have never experienced a problem. I also own many Blu-rays. The ONLY reason BD won is due to studio support (i.e. WB). They had the same picture quality and sound. BD had greater capacity, while HD DVD was a more polished product with built in ethernet port (which was a huge deal since both formats required multiple updates) and Region Free coding. HD DVD was also more cost effective as it was the offical standard of the DVD Forum.
+Doutor Gori Physical media as a whole is going the way of the dodo if you ask me. I wont be suprised if the next generation of consoles dont have an optical drive at all.
L Lawliet Well, at least you bet your money on the winner side. Just in one occasion I went out and rent a Blu-Ray, just to test use this function on my PS3. Never again I watched another Blu-Ray movie.
I have both Blu Ray and HD DVD players. I have large collection of HD DVD movies like Stalingrad (Enemy at the Gates French import) and Bloodrayne from Russia by Lizard Cinema Trade. I also have many Universal studios hd dvd and combo 2 sided movies and a lot from Paramount pictures anf Warner Bros.
Technically, 1080i looks no different when the source is progressive. The problem arises when something is shot interlaced because there are literally two moments in time captured within the same frame. That's why many sports channels go with 720p instead of 1080i. What they lose in resolution they make up for in smoothness.
Technically, if the source is progressive, and the output in 1080i, that's a 50% loss of motion fidelity. If the output device is incapable of 30hz, that 50% loss of motion fidelity results in a 100% gain in deinterlacing artifacts.
They come in red boxes.I believe they are just as good as blu-ray.You can get players that do 1080p.They even released an add on for the xbox 360,so you could play them through there.
Universal Studios released their movies on Blu-ray Disc such as Barbie, Dazed & Confused, American Girl, Mamma Mia, Despicable Me and Jem & the Holograms
Pete, thanks for the great comment buddy! I love your videos dude! Yeah man, I love to collect the old formats as well...Laserdisc especially for the awesome artwork! I haven't gotten back into VHS, but I do have a good VCR. I actually...and I hate to say it...tossed a bunch of VHS tapes into the trash about 12 years ago. I'm thinking now that maybe I should have held onto those! Thanks for the great comment man!
I was more interested in the contest because it would impact optical data formats for PCs - although all these years later I still use DVD-R and DVD-R DL when I need to archive something.
Yeah, I know about that player. I don't really need one now since I already have a Blu-ray player and an HD-DVD player. Thanks for the suggestion though, and thanks for watching!
I’ve got every format known to man. I picked Beta over VHS back in the day and I picked HD DVD over blu ray. Oh well. Anyway, it turns out that blu ray was the better format. If you play a HD DVD disc on a high end OLED, it doesn’t reach blu ray levels. Of course there are exceptions. The Thing has a good look to it. I always felt there was a yellowish tint to HD DVD. The last HD DVD disc I bought was Firewall and the quality just wasn’t there.
Great video Wes (that's a lot easier than saying MrMovieNight everytime haha) I have never collected HD-DVD's, I went straight from DVD to Blu-Ray. I remember my Mam buying Trasformers on HD-DVD but we couldn't watch it because we don't have a player ahaha. You have a really good collection, definitely something interesting to collect and a lot cheaper!
What is the build quality on an HD-DVD? Blu-ray Disc has an extra coating on it to make them more scratch resistant than standard DVDs. Are HD-DVDs more scratch resistant than standard DVDs as well? Also, the cases look more red than purple. At least, in the video they do.
EPS5000 The extra coating was needed cause the first layer information was engraved at the external side of the disc so it was highly scratchable.. HdDvd had the movie inside de disk.. so the same nature of the disc protected the data.
Nice collection. FYI, at the time both formats were viable, HD DVD was the superior format due to its use of mpeg4 encoded videos, while Blu-ray was still used Mpeg2, consistent menus across all HD DVDs, and the players were cheaper. That being said, its a dead format, so enjoy watching cheap flicks. BTW, I have yet to run across any bad discs.
Great video idea. I have about 25 HD-DVD titles myself. I was so torn in the early days of the HD-DVD & Blu-ray format war, that I decided to pick up an LG Super Blu player that played both formats. I have since replaced my HD-DVD titles with their Blu-ray counterparts. Like yourself, I prefer Blu-rays. Dude, "Midnight Run" is a fun film...watch it soon, let us know what you thought. Later.
I only have 300 of those and unfortunatly some of them are going bad but just a few maybe a 5 titles up to now. I had some Blu-ray that went bad too so it is not a question of format.
White Noise and the Fourth Kind were the only horror movies were I had to pause and open the curtains to my movie room turned the lights on ... man they were scary movies to me
Wonderful collection you have there. I still collect HD-DVD's myself as well. May I ask where you find yours at? We have some of the same titles. Great update and I'm know a subscriber of your channel and look forward to watching more videos from you.
I also got Mr. Brooks for HD DVD also Russian import by Lizard cinema trade. I am getting rare copy of war known as Rogue assassins in Europe. I have very rare copy of Downfall from Spain. I have a HD DVD HD-A2. I also have many Blu Ray movies from Europe like Bloodrayne from Germany, Bloodrayne Trilogy also German import, Bloodrayne 2 UK import, Power of Fear(German import but region B only),Downfall Blu Ray copy Canadian import also includes DVD copy. I also have Super Multi Blue player by LG Electronics called BH200. it plays all DVD, HD DVD and Blu Ray. it won't play region B Blu Ray movies or region 2 DVD movies.
I have a hddvd collection as well.I was always i huge fan over blueray.I have about 70 with some doubles as when you buy packages sometimes they come with some i already have.but they are so cool.I also have the smaller i think 4th gen player.I had the original big forst player the gray one but i gave it away :/ lol.
Well...they look more purplish than straight red to me. Anyway, that's a petty thing. I agree that Blu-Ray is a superior format and I never said that it wasn't. HD DVD is still cheap and cool to collect in my opinion. And most likely, it's the players or the firmware that is going bad and not the discs themselves. Thanks for watching!
Unfortunately, I only have about 5 or 6 games for the NES. I mostly just display it there on my shelf to remind me of the good ole' days! Thanks for watching!
HD-DVDs are in red cases not purple ones. I'm guessing you might be a bit colorblind. I thought about collecting HD-DVDs but recently I've heard many HD-DVD collectors complaining their old HD-DVD discs are no longer working. Seems they go bad for some reason over time. I know some HD-DVD collectors who check their entire collection every 6 months to pull the bad discs out so beware. Looks like the superior format did win afterall.
i play hd dvds on my xbox 360 :) i have on hd dvd: The thing, Pride and Prejudice, Children of men, Chronicles of Riddick, King Kong, Van Helsing, Elizabeth the golden age :)
i believe hd dvd lost the format war because by early 2008 the hollywood studios were sick of the format war and they just wanted one format , they looked at the sales and just went with blu ray, hd dvd really did nothing wrong but with disney and fox exclusively supporting blu ray it was always going to be an uphill battle.
How many of your HD-DVD's have become HD-DUD's? I've had a half dozen or so crap out on me (disc rot) fortunately Warner and Universal were kind enough to replace with Blu's... and the others i got replaced on Amazon/Ebay for a couple of dollars new lol
I want sony to make a player that can play HD DVDs. They made a Blu Ray Player that could also play VHS tapes as well at one point. I've got a feeling it won't be long before they make a special 4K Ultra HD player that can play HD DVDs as well
ElfHostage blu-ray beat it. Blu-ray had more studios on board (thus many more movies were being made), ps3 games used blu-rays, and in general, it was just better because it had more storage space. since every single ps3 was a blu-ray player and you could get them for hundreds of dollars less than a standalone blu-ray or hd-dvd player, it put a lot of them into the market.
+MrHandss Not as many people switched over immediately from DVD to BLU-RAY, like they had with VHS. The technology is unnecessary, and costs the consumer and manufacturers more money and effort in comparison to having already invented a perfect format of HQ video delivery a decade earlier. Reds*. Not purple cases. HD DVDs were called Reds during the format war.
I still have the HD DVD's and the Xbox 360 HD DVD player that I purchased in 2006.
I feel for the folks that paid $1,000 for their players.
Will C I don't. $1000 for the monster 01 brick should have been the key to walk.
i was 7-8 at that time and you sir were one of the people I was jealous of haha, jokes aside that's a pretty neat thing to have
Great collection! Looks like I'm not the only one still buying this format. Thanks for sharing!
When Disney is on your side, you know who is the winner.
Ava Butera Edits Warner Bros and Sony Pictures.

You think HD DVDs look as good as blu rays on a OLED tv? I don’t see it .
Awesome stuff brother, im so glad that u also open the cases to show the inside.
Back in the day, I really thought HD-DVD would win the format war.
+Doutor Gori Physical media as a whole is going the way of the dodo if you ask me. I wont be suprised if the next generation of consoles dont have an optical drive at all.
L Lawliet I agree. But in 2005 it wasn't that clear to me. Good thing a didn't put my money in either.
Doutor Gori Well I did :P I foolishly bought a Blu-ray burner for my desktop pc back in 2006.. Never used it even once :P
L Lawliet Well, at least you bet your money on the winner side. Just in one occasion I went out and rent a Blu-Ray, just to test use this function on my PS3. Never again I watched another Blu-Ray movie.
Doutor Gori Aye I went with the winner, a hollow victory though, and a big hole in my wallet. Hehehe.
Definantly color blind it's red cases
I have both Blu Ray and HD DVD players. I have large collection of HD DVD movies like Stalingrad (Enemy at the Gates French import) and Bloodrayne from Russia by Lizard Cinema Trade.

Wrong, HDDVD was also 1080P
@@thedausthed CORRECT
Disc rot bad with most Warner brothers titles on HDdvd.
In movie options n menus hands down was thr best part of hddvd.. no stopping and going back to menu or scene selection bs.
HD-DVD shall rise again! well...maybe not, hehe, still love that format. Rock on sir!
I've got around 100 hd dvd movies and to this day still enjoy them
They come in red boxes.I believe they are just as good as blu-ray.You can get players that do 1080p.They even released an add on for the xbox 360,so you could play them through there.
Very cool. Any tips on how I should stat my HD DVD Collection?
Love the classic NES toaster in the background. Nyyyyceeeee
bought a hd dvd player with two movies for the Xbox 360. i paid 20 euro, nice collection you have!!
Yes sir! HD on the cheap! Still a fun format to collect! Rock on brotha!
I bought a HDdvd drive for $30 and buy hddvd movies for 2 to 3 dollars. cheaper than renting movies.
Universal Studios released their movies on Blu-ray Disc such as Barbie, Dazed & Confused, American Girl, Mamma Mia, Despicable Me and Jem & the Holograms
Nice indeed! That's why I have a HTPC built into a NES case!
I still own an HD DVD add-on for Xbox 360 since Christmas 2007. I still own some HD DVD films (like Goodfellas and Unforgiven).
Pete, thanks for the great comment buddy! I love your videos dude! Yeah man, I love to collect the old formats as well...Laserdisc especially for the awesome artwork! Great stuff mate im a lover of hd-dvd aswell got a mini collection going hope to make it grow in time
Yeah, I know about that player. I don't really need one now since I already have a Blu-ray player and an HD-DVD player. Thanks for the suggestion though, and thanks for watching!

i got 150 of the hd dvds still play them. im looking for another player
Correction: field of dreams quote, if you build it HE will come.
Everyone seems to misremember it.

It's really sad that Warner HD-DVDs always rot.

Thanks for watching bro! Looking forward to your new album!
I just bought one... Hd-A3 for $8.50 at goodwill. Disks are $3, salespeople think they are regular dvds.
Haha. Good for you...best of luck with that. Thanks for watching my video!
Thanks for watching! I actually like Blu-ray better, but HD DVD is still a fun format to collect!
Right now i'm unable to watch this entire video, so I don't know if this topic was covered - but is HD DVD region free?
Yes, HD-DVD never had region coding.
I notice an NES on the shelf. Do you own many games for it?
Great review on this remarkable format. Do you have the Saw DVD with Billy's face turned towards the camera on purpose? :P
Well...they look more purplish than straight red to me. Anyway, that's a petty thing. I agree that Blu-Ray is a superior format and I never said that it wasn't. Those are red cases, not purple
hd dvd format was rather better than blu - ray.I have The same movies in both formats and HD DVD always wins the comparative.
How so?
Ricardo Rocha Home-video Blu Rays have a lot more storage compatibility though
wright96d Cause HdDvd was designed as a live video source and BluRay was a storage device.. thats why they have this terrible loading times.
Unfortunately, I only have about 5 or 6 games for the NES. I mostly just display it there on my shelf to remind me of the good ole' days! Thanks for watching!

You keep those DVDs now they're worth a fortune
No there not the players here in the uk are rare as hens teeth but go for 30 to 20 quid and the DVDs sell in shops for 50p to a pound
i believe hd dvd lost the format war because by early 2008 the hollywood studios were sick of the format war and they just wanted one format , they looked at the sales and just went with blu ray, hd dvd really did nothing wrong but with disney and fox exclusively supporting blu ray it was always going to be an uphill battle.

I've been inspired to buy an HD DVD player by you now. How can pass up these cheap movies?
I want sony to make a player that can play HD DVDs. They made a Blu Ray Player that could also play VHS tapes as well at one point. I've got a feeling it won't be long before they make a special 4K Ultra HD player that can play HD DVDs as well
The Creepernator doubtful.
Panasonic was the company that really took on the getting everything off VHS to DVD with their machines
wote 4k to get hd-dvd combo burner to europe again. it newer came.
WHY did the HD DVD get defeated though?
Sony bribed the studios with cash to switch to Blu-ray
ElfHostage blu-ray beat it. Blu-ray had more studios on board (thus many more movies were being made), ps3 games used blu-rays, and in general, it was just better because it had more storage space.

you should start a facebook fan page...that will be awesome

purple? nigga that's red.
Who the hell doesn't remove the security tape on top?! 😩
I bought a HD-DVD player and 117 discs for $40 yes they are cheap
Wow Some People Still Collecting HD DVDS
Do beta Max collection next
Later HD-DVD players could do 1080p.
NES! :D
HD dvd titles from Warner brothers had disc rot
Can a windows 7 or 8.1 computer even play hd dvd's? Why are they so cheap if they are so rare?
HD-DVD had pc support all the way. Their not all rare depends on what movie
As Betamax versus VHS, the porn made the deal! End of story
It's is like an OCD thing he shows the inside of every box???
Ironicly, the simple regular DVD is still out selling Both
ik it's so weird
Because DVD are dirt cheap. But who wants to watch a movie on lower resolution?
Most people never gave up their DVD players (I wonder if they realize that the Xbox and PS plays Blu-Rays?)
Icybubba blueray players play dvds, and they're still making the dvd players also so yeah, they know. my mom still got her VCR because some companies are still making recordalbe VCR tapes, they still sale big in some countries, but I still see them in stores here in the USA.
Thanks for watching!
He voice sound similar to Michael j fox
blu ray won because its stores more data then HD-DVD Storage Format could of
HD DVDs now suffer with disc rot they were obviously not made as well as Blu ray discs
Usually the format porn chooses wins oddly enough
they lost the war because sony gave a 500 million dollar cheque to warne bros to stay with the blu ray format.
Ok, now HDDVD is officially dead now in 2015... BluRay/Sony Won! Wooha!
Never bought any of the Hd dvds glad I didnt now lol
Sony doesnt even make electronics anymore. They have other companies making there vidio and home electronics. What a shame... Sony of old is gone.
PlayStation?
Bluray>HD Dvd
The Big Lebowski is one of those rare cases where the HD-DVD looks better than the Blu-Ray.
Blu Ray won because Sony was brilliant by putting it in their ps3. Therefore more blu ray players out there. Not some $200 attachment xbox fail.
Never really been a MOVIE BUFF I am more of a bog standard gamer PS4 ALL THE WAY
