What a great man....he was my Grandfathers Platoon commander in Tidworth whilst in The Rifle Brigade....and on a route March..my Grandfather and all being in full kit...and the Officers (Niven) running up the line of troops as they went up Tidworth hill (yes..I have been up it too...) stating “...come on chaps...I would most certainly rather be going up Ginger Rogers than this fucking hill....” True...and this is what makes him special....and a great man...especially in my Grandfathers eyes..
I just love a British gentleman! The witty humor, the style and polish, and when they're tall, its just the best ❤. Charles Dance, David Niven, Tom Hiddleston, just to name a few of my favorites
In love with the Gentleman since I was six years old .... David Niven has now departed this mortal coil .... I am , decades later , now 64, .... watching the Gentleman once more on this clip. Dare I say that I am still head over heels !?
absolutely yes - me too! Every time I see him in anything, I know that I adore him and wish I could tell him! A Matter Of Life And Death, or Candleshoe - or Separate Tables - or anything! Makes me wish for post-life reunions somewhere on the astral, if I could meet him ...
@@paulnolan4971 ah yes ... and at the end, the single tear as "proof", caught expertly on the petals of the rose ... and the immortal line about love ... which, as it is a favourite, I had written on the plaque on the back of a cinema seat I sponsored at my local art house cinema ... SO MUCH in that film which is just incredible - the colour vs/black & white, the staircase which was a feat of clever ingenuity and engineering - Absolutely tremendous stuff.
i read both of his books. Love them. Reading his books, really gives a glimpse of himself, esp his humor. He was such a classy and colorful man. I could listen to this man telling stories for hours and days long.. love his 'My Surprise Birthday Party in a brothel' story. With Sir Laurence Olivier, Peter Ustinov, Lauren Becall .. haha!
The moons a balloon and Bring on the empty horses both of these books are unforgettable, I read both of them forty years ago and still remember them well absolutely brilliant. Niven made the world a better place his war record his acting and his writing were quite something
“David, have you tried everything?” And then the most genuine cracking smile and response “I think so”………… A one off who made his own brand of a self deprecating Englishman his own. A brilliant raconteur, a gifted author and consummate actor.
I have got movie DVDS of David Niven with Gregory Peck Anthony Quinn Anthony Quayle James Darren Stanley Baker and James Robertsons Justice in The Guns Of Naverone with Telly Savalas Elliott Gould Stephanie Powers Anthony Valentine and Roger Moore are both German Officers in Escape To Athena and I am dedicating these movie DVDS to my old school friends who are both sisters as I hope to see them both again very soon to Chris and Hester from Billyxxxxx
"Only regrets [...] the things you don't try" Then the implications hit him. The off-the-cuff sound byte that sounds fantastic until you think it through. Not trying "rainbows r us" isn't something to regret, if you get my gist. 😉😂
I could listen to him for a lifetime. What a lovely man.
tomdid1 Me too.
Amen to that ..
Agree 100%
Class and decency are rare in popular culture. And intelligence . Now we have the Kardashians

David Niven is a legend in his own right. A glorious English Gentleman.

@@secretmermaidgirl2878 A Matter Of Life And Death blew my mind as a kid. Monumental epic of a movie

I have never heard, or read, anything distastefull about him, presumably he was a true gentleman. And fine actor of course : )
My favourite actor of all time. I would have loved to have had a drink 🥃 with him & listened to his stories. RIP David, a true gent.

I’m about to order them.
There is another book.
Go slowly and come back quickly
Get the audio versions. He narrates them. They are wonderful.
David’s biography books are a must read, I wish I’d have met him, what an interesting life he had, I could listen to him talk for days
What a nice chap.
What a great interview, he had a wicked sense of humour. But still the perfect gentleman, sadly missed forty year's on
Niven sounds British.
That's a Britain I can recognise.
What has happened to this country now?
Who are all these people?
Why?
Why?
Gorgeous human being..
I have to thank UA-cam that I get watch great videos like this. Thanks for uploading the video!
At his funeral the biggest wreath was from the porters at Heathrow Airport.
" To the finest gentlemen to ever walk through our halls"

It's touching how kindly he talks about his wife while she was quite horrible and quite ruined his life....
He was wonderful.

CLASS!
Pure Magic.
Poor David, his Swedish wife made his life hell, even insulting him on his deathbed, yet for some reason he didn't divorce her.
Love

His first wife was so wonderful and his second wife was just terrible!
One word “Class”.
The fashions are hideous.... the class is for all time.
He would have been an excellent Alfred in a Batman movie
Very very true!
oh good shout

Alan Hargreaves i believe
David Niven, a proper Englishman.......who do not need a knighthood.............ask Nessie!
Who's the interviewer?
Who is the interviewer? He is truly awful at his job.
