Laurie, although I agree with you on most things, I disagree with taking only one pair of pants and one pair of shoes. If you spill or get wet, you need a backup and sometimes you need a different pair of shoes to give your feet a change to prevent blisters. I learned that the hard way years ago when I took two pairs of shoes that were the same style. Now I always take a pair that fits differently--especially if I'm going to be walking a lot. Thanks for all your work informing the public. Your approachable ways are very much appreciated.😊

Definitely a 2nd pant needed in case you stain it or get caught in rain!.. even leggings could be ok, to save weight
Also 2nd pair of shoes ,like ballerina flats that are really light👌

I'm clumsy and once slipped and took a spectacular tumble on a pavement in Edinburgh when I was walking to a relative's house. I managed to get a few bumps and bruises, but the leggings I'd worn under my dress were trashed. Luckily I had tights for backup, but I've learned since that a backup bottom is always worth it.
And I learned the need for backup shoes on another trip, where my back got messed up by the hotel bed and decided that my winter boots, which I'd worn loads before without issues, were suddenly the devil incarnate.

After traveling to 38 countries what seems to work best for me is the 2-2-2 rule. Two bottoms, two tanks, two tshirts, two long sleeve shirts and two pairs of shoes. Add in a sweater or jacket depending on the weather. All in lightweight fabrics, of course.

I thought of another hack learned from a friend. Pack clothing you’ll either toss or give to a charity. Except for what you’ll definitely take home, on your last wear of each item either leave it or toss in the trash. You’ll have lighter luggage or room for souvenirs/purchases on the return trip home. We're in the midst of packing for a trip that will include no checked luggage on an Ait Lufthansa flight- WOW, very limiting sizes and weight (8kg-about 16lb). So yes, mulit layers being planned for what we are wearing on the plane. Dark colored bottoms and tops that go with mutiple items, including layering. 2 pair of flat shoes will go in the bottom of my personal item. And we aknowledge that we will A) do laundry and B) probabaly buy one or two shirts of some kind. Add to that we took out the insides of our neck pillows and filled them with socks and undies. I have a fresh outfit for 9 nights of cruising dinners, and a total of 16 nights of vacay. This puzzle has been challenging- and a little fun at the same time. Hoping to take photos each day of the outfits to share at some point ;)

Toothpaste tabs were definitely a game changer for me! Another thing I do to reduce liquids: normally I wear contacts that last for a month - they must be cleaned every night and morning, which means packing lens case, cleaning solutions, and lens wet drops. For travel, however, I use one day/disposable lenses. I don't need a case or cleaning solutions that way, and it does save space. I do need to pack an extra pair of bottoms and shoes, but I choose thin gauzy cotton for summer - I need something nicer for going out, and I need to change around my shoes or I get blisters. But I'd only pack sandals or walking flats in summer, so not much extra space or weight. If I'm limited to a personal item, I'll wear a shell tank, short sleeve blouse, layering shirt, and sweater or light jacket on the plane, and only pack 3 short sleeve and 1 long sleeve tops as well. And a packet of dry laundry soap sheets meant for camping. I wash the day's top, socks and unmentionables every evening and hang to dry, so I don't need as many tops even for a longer trip. In warm weather, a tank and a few gauzy scarf-like tops to go over will fit in a quart size baggie and give plenty of fashion options.

Love your tips, Laurie. My niece and I are going to Japan next February for a couple of months and I’m challenging myself to go carry-on only. My niece has always been much more low-maintenance than me, so it’s a piece of cake for her. One thing I find helpful is to leave my phone at home and just take my iPad mini. It has a great camera, google maps, Netflix, all my e books, etc. I use Skype to call home if I need to. Very inexpensive and I don’t have to worry about roaming charges. And only one charging cord required.
Another thing I like is that a lot of places have donation boxes at the airport to drop whatever change and small bills you have leftover in the local currency. It goes to local charities and your pockets are lighter for your trip home.

I've traveled in Europe several times with carry on only, but this time I really wanted to make things organized in an easier way. You are such a Rock Star of Travel and I truly trust what you share. So a few Loves: Wit and Wisdom Jeans, I just bought 2 pairs and they have replaced other stretch jeans I own (wear a 6) ~ so comfy. I have bought several shirts you have recommended. I wish my arms and legs were as cute as yours so I could buy more of your shirt and short recommendations (I suffer from cellulite since my 40's - bummer). Have in my clothing colors, grey/blue/black/tan. Love my solid shampoo/conditioner/lotion bars! We also purchased the Trip compression bags and toiletry bag, used recently and loved. We purchased some of those lambskin bags that are perfect for Euros (I like to keep coins and bills separated) and using 1 for an electronics bag for underseat. Tried several underseat bag options, but dang Aer Lingus is not easy, ended up with a small duffle (even though I would have loved to keep the Nomad Lane Bento). Last purchase, your travel curling iron recommendation. Luckily we live in Seattle, so I can get it tomorrow. Anyhow, we leave in 2 days for a two week European cruise and week before and after travel trip - 4 weeks total. THANK YOU for all your videos and tips. I’ve tried the dry toothpastes and I don’t recommend them. It’s a better idea to either bring a travel size with you or buy one where you’re going. Just make sure they have a brand you prefer where you’re going. I would also do an estimate of how much it costs to buy extra things like toothpaste tablets vs paying for a checked bag. If you don’t travel much like I do, paying for a checked bag is usually cheaper than buying travel specific anything. Then I can take the tube of toothpaste or bottle of soap I’m currently using. I will say though, packing cubes have been worth it! Even when you’re just going on a road trip or train trip they keep things organized and that’s worth it to me.

Here a tip from myself for travelling/flying during wintertime or to cold countries. I put my beloved bulky woolen cardigan (hand-knitted by my granny) into a zip pillow cover. So I have an additional pillow and it doesn't count as personal item and easily fits between handles of carry-on suitcase. I have an Away carry on. It measures 22”x13”x8.5”. I packed for a 10 day trip to Spain in this and an Osprey commuter backpack. Follow the weather reports. Was 3wks before flight >70 daytime. By travel day temps low to upper 60’s with night temps in the 40s. Night temps matter in Spain as locals’ restaurants start dinner at 8 or 9pm. I’d rather experience local food than tourist trap food. Clothes can be washed in shampoo or body wash provided by hotel, if it gets your funk of your body, it’ll get your funk off your clothes. Also bear in mind, if the high is 63F, most of your day is in the 50’s. So layer. I wore a thin top, a sweater & a jacket or rain jacket to start the day. We also spent 2 days in Madrid and used the Metro and walked to get around. We rented a car to get from Madrid to Toledo, Cordoba, Granada, Barcelona and back to Madrid to fly home with a stop at a city along the way to stretch legs & eat. In the cities we walked everywhere. If you have ever been in an ancient or medieval town, you know to say the streets are narrow is an understatement. So you park and leave it there until you leave. I packed 3 pr merino wool socks(sockwells feather wt mod. compression for flight) black crew socks, black knee socks, all merino wool blend. 2 bras (1 to wear) 5 pr panties (merino wool, light & dry over night) 2 pr leggings, mid wt. gray for travel day and black. 1 nicer pr black for dressier places. 3/4 sleeve merino sweater top to go with pants. 2 long and 2short sleeve merino tops, 3 merino sweaters heaviest to wear travel day. 1 pr allbirds ballet flats (dressier), JBU flat shoes, ankle hiking boots for flight and most days as I have a bad ankle and need support. Small 3x5” bag for makeup. TSA bag for liquids & one for supplements & meds (allergies &asthma) a tiny tin of emergency meds 1x2” with 3 mucinex tabs, chlor tabs & 6 acetaminophen. Patagonia nano puff (L) & torrentshell (XL) in navy, to layer. Rain jackets are also windbreakers. Merino wool can be worn several days and won’t stink. The tops were in different colors as pants and sweaters were all in shades of gray & black so I had enough variety to not tire of my wardrobe. I also bought the pricier items on poshmark (away suitcase ($160), Patagonia jackets ($90 &$45), 2 of 3 sweaters($50, ibex & $75, icebreaker) & sweater top ($45, ibex). All of these looked brand new. OTC meds can be purchased in a pharmacy, got Covid last 3 days so googled & screen shot what I needed (more mucinex, afrin, and delsym) and pharmacist understood what I needed. They don’t have these things on shelves, they have large back rooms with drawers that they get them from so don’t waste time looking around just go to the desk. Do screen shots at hotel, as search & loading can take minutes & be frustrating. I also packed a travel kettle and hair dryer that are dual voltage (Elitegourmet & Conair) as keuregs have replace kettles in rooms and some places don’t have hair dryers or they shut off after a minute. Turn them to 240 before you pack them! Jet lag! I like tea & can’t sleep on planes so I bring instant oatmeal, tea, & instant coffee packets so I don’t have to leave the room for the first 6-8 hrs and can sleep. I also bring jerky & a pkt of koyo ramen &a sea to summit collapsible lidded bowl in case I can’t eat airline meal (tomato & bell pepper allergies) and a sea to summit collapsing cup with ml & oz. measurements &lid. Noise canceling headphones and travelon 3 compartment cord organizer which was a life changer. They fit my ear buds, usb plug, 3in1 charger cord in one and the other holds my apple cord, headphones cord and corded earbuds for the plane. Put them in skinny side down and you can see them at the top of your backpack easily and even put one in the seat pocket for in flight use. Also pack a cross body purse (bagalini) for use at destination. And a gossamer gear hip/ fanny pack to hold my phone, eye drops, snack, handkerchief, lip balm for in flight use. I also switched to handkerchiefs during Covid as they work even when wet and can be washed and dry in less than 24hrs (packed 5). Also packed a PackTowl to dry my hands in restrooms and use as a wash cloth as they don’t provide them in Europe or England. I also have this in my purse always as I hate hand dryers, they take too long and are too loud. I also pack nylon shopping bags (2”x3”x1/4”) to carry shopping in so I don’t look so touristy and become a mark. I like fresh fruit and in Europe it is picked ripe so it’s tastier and sweeter than here. I also take it on the plane home, but it must be eaten before you land in the US or they will make you toss it. You can bring chocolates, tea and cookies thru customs.

Laurie, great video. I travel on average 2-4 days a month, then 5-7 day trips a year. Last year I traveled for a 12 day trip. I know I need to limit the weight of my bags to keep them where I can handle them myself. So on my 12 day trip to safe weight I switched to bars of soap, shampoo and face soap. I tried them all before my trip, and invested in the Matador bar soap bags. I am still using the same quarter bars from the 12 day trip. Also switched to tablet toothpaste, this is not my favorite, but I am determined to use them up. I don’t think I will ever be able to pack only one pair of shoes or bottoms. I have worn one pair of jeans and packed a skirt. As far as shoes I wear barefoot shoes most of the time, so they safe space and are very light weight. Don’t plan on just buying a pair and be ready to pack them. They do take time to adjust to, you have to toughen the soles of your feet and give the muscles in your feet to adjust. When wearing barefoot shoes in cities be aware of the knobs in the sidewalks at intersection. After several years of wearing barefoot shoes, those knobs still hurt the soles of my feet. I also pack lots of cashmere, merino wool, or alpaca fiber items. I air wash the merino wool and alpaca fiber items several times before actually washing them. Hope this will help someone.

Really enjoy your channel and have purchased some of your travel clothing/gear recommendations. Will let you know how they work out. Have 4 trips over next 11 months to trial them.

CPAP items (medical device) normally don't fall under carry-on restrictions. They should be free as an additional carry-on. The only thing is, you might have to open carry-on to show medical device. To be sure, check it with airline.
My experience: If you put CPAP in checked luggage, pad it very well to protect it from damage. Airline staff is not really smart handling luggage. Here another tip from my own experience: Get colourful stickers, for example "Breakable, handle with care", which are used when sending parcels, and put on your checked luggage. It should help from getting damaged.

We’re flying Aerlingus to Ireland in a few weeks and their personal item restrictions are even smaller than Icelandair! I’ll be interested to see if they enforce such small dimensions, I doubt it. I can’t risk it though, as I need my meds that will be in that bag.

I am so happy for you. You may want to purchase a small extension cord for the cpap and an adapter that has about 3 outlets in it since some hotels only have 2 outlets.. But have fun!

I really enjoy Laurie's videos as she is fun and positive and am looking for tips as we will be going on a trip with only carry on. Do women really use all those brushes for make up? This is new to me.

Ha, I now do lol. But the tip and trick is that we really do not need them all for a vacation. I had room in the suitcase for my River Cruise.

I am allergic to all wool but I am cold constantly. I always wear my coat on the plane because of the air conditioning. My sweaters are always bulky and take up to much room in suitcase. Is there another material that you recommend for someone like me? Thanks for all your helpful tips!

Silk base layer. Soft and warm. Also walmart had cuddle duds in fleece or polyester also warm and less expensive.

I love the Nomad Lane bag but it is not in my budget. I love the light interior. Any suggestions for a less expensive one?

Hi I am usually a backpack gal and this is the only one I’ve liked. Search for some you can afford with free shipping and return it if you don’t love it.

I showed it on an old Amazon video and felt like it looked super obvious. But try it.

Aloha! I really enjoy your videos. I want to tell you that a regular backpack may not always fit under the seat in front of you. We took a flight from SFO to OGG (Maui) a month ago on United, a Boeing 737. The plane was 40 years old and the seats were reconfigured to where my regular sized backpack could not fit at all under the seat in front of me and there was no room in the above units, so I had to sit with my backpack taking up my very limited seat space for hours.

How do you like the nomad Origami bag vs. the Bento Bag for a personal item?

    • @TravelTipsbyLaurie
      @TravelTipsbyLaurie  8 місяців тому

I have already traveled more with the tote than the Bento. It’s like a large purse but bigger. It also can squish more easily. It’s like Tumi fabric too and that pretty light interior.

If you're wearing a jacket, you can put makeup bushes inside the pockets. Also placing smaller items inside your shoes.

Yes, when you can only pack the bare minimum, fill those pockets of your jacket. Love that hack!

Just Getting back from the Cincinnati and Orlando airport. It doesn’t seem like the liquid bag is important any more. Also, I don’t understand how some rules apply in some airports and not in others ??

We are doing a summer Alaska cruise with a few days in Victoria in advance. So, we are dealing with two different climates. We need to pack very light pants and warmer jeans. We are actually looking into shipping a suitcase with warmer clothes directly to the ship. I just don’t see any way we can pack for both locations in just carry on.

@barblibrarian (from a fellow librarian 📚 🤓) It CAN be done! I sailed Celebrity out of Seattle to the Alaska inside passage + Victoria BC last July, then took Amtrak down to Eugene/Salem/Portland OR to visit friends, all in one rolly carry on and a personal item bag. Two weeks, two (or three!) different climates with carry-on only! I followed Laurie's advice and packed lightweight layers in a single color scheme in packing cubes. I included a few pieces in a nicer fabric for the dress up dinners on board ship, and accessorized all over the place with a couple of silk and wool scarves that pack flat. I also wore my heavy waterproof hiking boots and heavy coat on the plane and train rides, saving space. My roommate was amazed at how few bags I brought and how versatile my outfits were. Have a great trip! ❤️🌄🐻
