It’s jaw dropping to consider the combined talents of the people responsible for North by Northwest. For a team like Hitchcock, Coleman, Burks, Tomasini, Herrmann, Boyle, Grant, Robertson, Lehman, Mason, Saint and so many other artists, craftspeople and technicians at the very top of their game to come together is rarer than hen’s teeth.
I remember the first time i saw North By Northwest in the film school. Was absolutely blown away by it. Alfred Hitchcock's films are truly a work of inspiration.
I remember first time I saw North by Northwest on a website with pirated movies. Was absolutely blown away by it. Alfred Hitchcock's films are truly a work of inspiration.
Long ago I had some wonderful times in the Oak Bar. A perfect place to start this Hitchcock classic. Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint had such wonderful chemistry between then. This is the kind of movie you could watch over and over again, and I have.
Years ago, I saw that NbyNW was showing in Palo Alto. I asked my wife if she had ever seen it. She replied that she had once seen it on TV. I said, “Oh, no, you’ve never seen North by Northwest.” We went to see it in its original glorious widescreen format. Hitchcock used every square inch of the frame to maximum effect. She was quite amazed.
It looks great in 1080 but in 4K HDR the VistaVision negative really shines. I watched my copy the other day and was constantly amazed by the quality or picture and sound. Also something that doesn’t get mentioned is that the dialogue doesn’t get lost in the mix.
With *White Christmas 4K* and now *North by Northwest 4K* this year alone, we now have two VistaVision films back in their original aspect ratio! The HD copies are in an improperly open-matted 1.78
I just noticed that as Cary walks into the hotel, the song “It’s A Most Unusual Day” is playing - which for those who recognized it, was a signal of all the crazy stuff that was just about to get started.
There were so many wonderful films in 1959 this is one of them! If it wasn't for Ben Hur being an epic and somewhat better, North by Northwest would have won many awards including Best Picture of the Year !!!!!
Ben Hur better ? Surely you jest. NBNW is head and shoulders above Ben Hur as a work of art. And by the way, who cares about Ben Hur now, or considers it one of the best movies ever made ?
"Ben Hur" wasn't anywhere near NbNW in just about every aspect, except for the thrilling, impressively photographed chariot scene. (The silent version was better.) *weren't
How are we supposed to see how stunning the 4K is when the clip is only 1080p? And the sound mix is awful. The music shouldn't drown out the dialog - it should support it. "North By Northwest" was the first disc I ever bought for the first disc player I ever bought, but I'm not buying this. Thumbs down.
Is it me, or does it look like the opening credits are position wrong- the slant if you go by the upper right corner is saying north east, by North east. However, if you’re going from the lower left corner of the screen, then the slant makes it look like they’re saying Southwest by Southwest … Anybody else catch it??!
Why Cary Grant's character did not jump right away on the phone in the Manor room to call the police (or dial 0) to tell he had been kidnapped, he already knew the adress?
The movie is a masterpiece from the master Hitchcock but the 4K release lefts a lot to be desired. I enjoyed recently the remastered 4K edition of The Terminator very much but unfortunately in this case the 1080p version looks quite better than the 4K disc. Sounds better too.
One of them is Donna Douglas, a year prior to her role in the classic episode of The Twilight Zone “Eye of the Beholder” and three years prior to fame in The Beverly Hillbillies as knockout Elly Mae Clampett. She actually crosses in front of Cary Grant and Doreen Lang, which would be impossible for an extra without being told to do so. I’ve always wondered if this was a favor from Hitchcock. I don’t know, but it’s definitely her at 2:56.

My high school teacher in grade 9 English introduced us to Hitch ❤
Odd to advertise a 4K presentation, and yet this video is in standard HD.
And it's not a preview
Wow. That looks STUNNING. North by Northwest has never looked better. I cant wait to get my copy for Christmas
Best opening sequence ever! R.I.P. Saul Bass

Have you seen the opening of "Touch of Evil"?
North by Northwest (1959) is my favorite movie of all time.
It’s my comfort movie. 😎😎
@@LeonardoJJardim Tremendous film they will never make movies like this ever again 😔😔😔
The music is so loud that it drowns out the dialog. Since it's composed by the great Bernard Herrmann, I'm all for it. Fantastic!
Not just Hitch directing it was the brilliant script by Ernest Lehman that made this a classic.
My most memorable scene is after "Thornhill" has got off the bus and is waiting beside this desolate rural road. Only to be attacked by that plane.
4K Ultra apparently.....why show in 1080p

The real stand out for me is James Mason , he really was a movie star , did he ever give a bad performance in anything he was in ?
Nope. He was a brilliant actor.

VistaVision was designed to be shown in any ratio between 1.5 and 2.0, so 1.78 is fine
An amazing restoration.
Don’t forget about the final train going into the tunnel scene - that rascal Hitchcock😂
This is a film that really deserves 4K... so it's a bit disappointing that this preview is only 1080P, according to my UA-cam quality menu...

I would guess that these days there are many, many more people who watch North by Northwest compared to those who watch Ben Hur.
@dmytryk7887 I'm sure you're right, but popularity is an unreliable indicator of excellence.
@@dmytryk7887 Ben Hur is up there with The Godfather no.1 as being the all time greatest films of all time!!!!!
Ernest Lehman told the director he wanted to write the Hitchcock picture to end all Hitchcock pictures, and I think he succeeded.
Best the scene with the secretary giving instructions from the building of the company till the taxi.
Beautiful Old Westbury - adds to the mystery and style !

Because it would've made too much sense to upload this clip, promoting the new 4k release, in...4k.

It’s funny how all those extras on the street scenes want to be in the frame and keep jockeying for position.
