  • Some people in the online community want to think that Subaru did nothing wrong during Re:Zero's third arc. How true is that? Was he actually the good guy? Let's examine if he's a jerk or not.

    I like interpreting RBD not as an overpowered ability (obviously because of its major drawbacks) but also because it's a representation of potential. Return by death is a power with infinite possibilities. It is up to the user's willpower to determine whether he will realize his potential.

    • @jongameaddict
      @jongameaddict 6 місяців тому +4

      The If stories really tell just how insane his potential is. He can be the worst villain in the world if he sets his mind to it, and not even in just one way, as multiple If stories have him be that in different ways. But... unfortunately he's also not allowed a happy escape either in Sloth.

    • @matthewvillanueva4420
      @matthewvillanueva4420 3 місяці тому +2

      @@jongameaddict do have tosay though, most of the if stories kind of just skip to the most glorious moments of that arc and basically skip to 'endgame subaru'- hence why I think it feels badass. Obviously if you skip through most of the suffering and if you stick to the 'true timeline' (the one that sticks), the main Subaru could be one of the most productive or OP 'if possibilities' there is.

    One of the great things about ReZero’s characters is how human they are, Subaru being the perfect example of it. He can do good, he has good intentions, but he can fuck him, can be selfish and ignorant, just like people. His imperfections is what makes him interesting and seeing him realize said imperfections, accepting them, and striving to become a better person and overcome those flaws is incredible. And thankfully, it isn’t just Subaru who has imperfections in this series.

    Well said; you've succinctly put down my own thoughts regarding Subaru's character and Arc 3's place in his development.
    There's a lot that cause his bad behaviour to occur: stress from the horrors he has faced; self-hatred due to his perceived inadequacies; a constant need for validation; isolation leading to less than pleasing thoughts regarding gender roles; ignorance at the culture he was ploped into; etc... You can name a lot of reason for why he did what he did, but that does not excuse him. Stuff like Roswaal manipulating things behind the scenes and other things people try to point to to defend this moment, because ultimately Subaru's own choices led him there.
    One of the main appeals of Subaru to is how malleable he is as a character without it feeling force. He's not a monster. At his core he is a decent person, but his issues and the situations he gets himself into greatly affect him as a person. If he got humbled earlier, he might've lost a lot of the bad attitude he had. If he had less support, he might've lost any heroism he had. It's this specific set of events that led to his outburst, which I find fascinating.
    I think audiences are so used to binary good or bad people in media that someone like Subaru that is depicted just as a person makes it really hard for them to understand Subaru without placing into one of those boxes. For as many Subaru stans there are that defend him to high heaven over any mistakes that he has made, there are just as many people just labelling unironically as incel, completely missing the nuance of his character. He's deeply flawed, but so is everybody. Re:Zero goes out of it's way to break down the idea that anyone's perfect, Subaru being the perfect vector for doing that. The point of it is that you can overcome those flaws, and accepting them as a part of you is the first step to learning to love yourself and not just others.
    That is Re:Zero; that is Subaru Natsuki.

      Well, Subaru WAS being an incel directed towards specifically Emilia. I said the one thing every incel says. "I did things for you so now you owe me" mentality. When that doesn't happen...they fight or fliight and just always end up arguing and fighting you.

    • @ultrapyrusbrawler
      @ultrapyrusbrawler 3 місяці тому

      @@peppermint3808 I disagree. Give him a few years of staying a loner, too afraid to face the outside, and he could become an incel, but the mentality you mention is only a part of incel ideology, not the whole. Subaru came off more as a "nice guy" to me. There is definite overlap, no denying that, but incels are much more extreme. Incels think they are owed a woman's affection just because they exist, not even due to them doing something for women. That's why I say labelling Subaru as an incel is missing the nuance, because even at his worst he would never act that way towards a random person on the street. To incels, there is no difference between a random woman they've passed by and someone they've know for years. To reiterate, I'm not saying Subaru's behaviour was good, but calling him an incel makes him out to be way worse than he was.

    You made a tremendously great point! Subaru and Rem have always been my two favorite Re:Zero characters. I always believed that Subaru and Rem were two sides of the same coin, just as overprotective, obsessed and "simp" over Emilia Subaru is, so was Rem for Subaru. Only difference, is that Subaru is the lead and was given proper time and character development to become better over time. In contrast, for Rem, Tappei seems to have just hit the reset button in Arc 7, which seems like a character regression imo. This is why I hope she regains her memories soon, I want her to properly develop on her own accord, not due to her forced state of having no memories, it's not satisfying. It's as if old Rem is dead, and this is a new character. Imagine Subaru never regaining his memories in Arc 6, everyone would be furious.

    It's important to note that it's not JUST that Subaru is a neet, but his actual perception of the "reality" differs from other characters. Due to how his ability works, Subaru has knows Emilia for longer than she has known him. His fixation on her is a sort of anchoring point to keep his sanity after so much mental trauma - and a mindset that he can always just die to reset things. He is an emotional wreck and no one would every understand why because he can't explain it. This is why Rem's speech his so fucking hard - she does not try to understand why he is wreck, she just accepts it and wants to see him heal.

    • @peppermint3808
      @peppermint3808 3 місяці тому +1

      But the problem with Rem is the fact she is co-dependent and allows him terrible behavior to go unchecked which is what you see entirely on Arc 3 when he is being an absolute A-hole. Then what hits hard for Subaru is that he found his pedestal version of himself inside someone elses head.
      it would be like Emilia trying to live on Subaru's expectation that he had his in head.

    • @peppermint3808
      @peppermint3808 2 місяці тому

      Also, I want to say....Trying not to understand why there in pain, is just leaving off to the side and thinking it doesn't actually exist. It's an extremely dangerous thing to do.

    It honestly annoying when people try to downplay character flaws, when the dynamic of flaws and strength is what makes your character actually deep. You can see that in discussion with Spider-man, where people try to claim Peter's assholism is post One More Day issue, when in reality a lot of old stories have him struggle with selfish or just plain assholish behaviour with a big part of it being a returning problem he has tendency to fall for. Lack of which in Marvel's Spider-man makes Symbiot arc quite lacking. And in terms of adaptation, Invincible show undercuts Mark's teenage sometimes selfish and snarky attitude, which is foolish when a lot of story is based on calling out how that attitude makes him on edge of becoming one of the evil versions in the multiverse and pretty much calls out how his moral posturing is pretty hypocritical and self centered.

    I have been pondering for a while on the nature of Crusch and Felix and I have come to realize that they both misunderstand masculinity and femininity as concepts. They both have very glaring weaknesses that caused their downfall in arc 4 and it is due to this lack of understanding of gender roles. Crusch's downfall was caused by her toxic idea of "masculine" traits, she didn't assess the situation against gluttony and greed, which lead her to attacking without a second thought (as men are always portrayed as violent "do first think second" in media right?) leading to her loss of memories and Felix's blunder was prevented by Wilhelm. Felix almost destroyed the alliance, because he acted to much on emotions (seen as a feminine weakness) without thinking through the situation, both characters were too brash and that is why they are struggling to take off even now.
    Crusch is my second favourite character and Felix is one of my least favourite ones, I love dissecting them, because there is a lot to unpack.

    I can understand people hating him in S1, but I've seen some that didn't give the series a second chance. Specifically they hated his loser behaviour or that he didn't go with Rem.
    Tho for all that we knew in S1 Emilia dying would result in the "world being destroyed" so I don't get those folks. And yes I have found out later about the what if story, and in S2 we do see *that* Puck's fate... But that's beside the point since they didn't continue watching.
    I adore he exists as a big slap in the face to the idilic escapism in the genre. But I was surprised by S2 that he is so much more than just that.

    Great video, but I'm a little surprised any of this needed to be said. Subaru's development is so good because of the cringe mistakes he makes along the way and how he learns to become a better person from them (some if his best episodes are mostly him talking about his flaws and how much he screws himself over). To say he did nothing wrong throws out a lot of what makes the character compelling, similar to a character from that other series everyone seems to believe you talk about all the time.
    Edit: Having finished the video and reflecting on the isekai I watched before Re:Zero, I totally understand why this needed to be said. Oh, target audiences...

    The thing that makes me hesitant to say that subaru was necessarily "wrong" in arc 3 is all the things that make him fail and suffer resemble the things that let him succeed and flourish, as pointed out by rems own image of subaru in her speech. Theres also what most people who havent watched re zero know about re zero the dumbest debate in anime history rem vs emilia (not only is argueing over women antithetical to what the serise is saying) rem being a popular waifu (if you google waifu she is up there with zero two and aska (and hey there is another character who is ment to be a critism of waifu tropes that instead became exactly what she is ment to criticize ) is funnily ironic to her purpose as a a typical anime waifu someone who loves you unconditionally and is used to run away from reality aka a subaru trying to use rem someone who ignores his falts runs away with her and ignoring the reality of emilia being in danger.

    Ofc morally, Subaru saying racism is bad isnt wrong, but there's a time and place for that and this wasn't it. Telling what's basically the acting rulers of the nation to fuck off is stupid no matter how you view it.
    People really don't understand that medieval socieites do NOT give a fuck about you. Even in real medieval societies, insulting the king often led to death with little fanfare. Subaru then stepped out of line by insulting the knights, the literal royal guard, of a medieval, heavily classist kingdom.

    My main issue with Season 1 is that it can come off as too harsh. Subaru's flaws are something I expect from a 17-year-old teen and yet I feel the show is expecting a teenager to NOT be a screw up. His speech in episode 18 falls flat for me because I expect those words from a 20-30 something adult man not a literal child. I compare Re Zero to Welcome to the NHK but that show's MC was a grown man who was surrounded by people just as messed up as him. Re Zero has an MC with understandable but mundane problems standing next to people with relatable but more fantastical problems.
    Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to get my opinion across.
