- Here is my first (of what I hope becomes many) tutorial videos for helping you guys become better editors! This is a basic no experience required simple "Masking" tutorial using ONLY Sony Vegas. If you guys want to see more videos like this please let me know, I would be happy to do them!

I have been using Sony Vegas for nearly a decade in various uses, but i rarely looked up tutorials as I made low effort content for fun. I'm now editing for people (also for fun) to challenge myself and learn other techniques. Masking seemed daunting to me for a long time until I stumbled upon this video last week, and it has helped me a ton. Thank you so much!

So, I have a bit of exp with simple masking, but, do you have anything or any suggestions when the object/thing you want masked or to show moves quite a bit. I'd never taken advantage of the track motion tool, and still don't know the full extent of its capabilities :) wonderful vid btw. Explains it well.

Great video! Question - and as of now, I just started learning how to mask - after you did your first rough mask, when you went back to make the dots look better, did you just click on the dots with the mouse, or did you hold any keys on the keyboard while clicking the mouse? Every time I try to fix a mask, I always mess up and the mask lines go crazy! Lol. Do you have any vids with a step by step guide on how to mask? Making a Proper Mask and while including what keys you’re using on the keyboard while using the mouse. I’d really like to get better at Masking. It’s an amazing tool! Thanks! Seems like a good tutorial, but I can't find the 'mask' button. It just isn't there for me. When I open up the pan/crop, the only timeline I see is the position timeline, no checkbox that says 'mask'
Ah damn, never mind. Masking isn't a part of the Sony Vegas Platinum. That's a little disappointing.

Ive been using Camtasia and seeing this video is wierd to me because I have been trying something similar for the last 2 days with Superman, since camtasia doesn't have a masking ability I have been trying to create a green screen video,
I've literally just found out that theres a trial for Vegas after watching ur video so I'm gonna use ur tutorial to help.

Very informative and helpful...trying to do the same in Vegas 10, and this helped a lot. Two points--1 it would be nice to see the end result in full, and 2-lots of background noise in the audio. Other than that...thank you!

You should do a tutorial for switching colors from footage
I just came here to ask does anyone know how to move the actual points without deleted them, like just dragging the points because everytime I go to a new frame I have to delete all the points and start over :( so if anyone can help I'll really appreciate it :)
edit: nvm I just found out after all this time, 2 years of using sony vegas, that it was all because I wasn't using the normal edit tool to move the points

I have an issue, i masked correctly and it makes a box or a circle if you will but the part I made is acting like I didn’t mask it at all and the background is still there but my character isnt

Sorry I got it to work. I think I wasn’t completing the circle around the object. Anyway it’s working like a charm.

This is great but it takes me a HUUGE TIME to make a 3 seconds video when my head is moving.
Any tips in how I can do it faster?
it has 139 frames yet I did in 1 hour and a half only 9......
After effects has a feature where you just mask the first frame and then it does the rest but the person cant move too much otherwise after effects gets all crazy.
There’s no trick, frame by frame for best results
alt + ] helps to delete the rest of a clip, same for alt + [ where he did s for split. for those that don't know. Loving the video!

I've used masking in my project and it looks good during the preview screen but when it is rendered it looks so shit and the masking it out of sync and its just terrible and I think its because of my render settings but I dont know how to adjust it to fix the masking. Help?
Before rendering, make sure you have clicked on your video tracks, gone to "Switches" and clicked "Disable Resample". It will stop that horrible blurred/double image look that Vegas tries to put on through its silly re-sampling:)

Thank you for sharing the tips on masking tool. I tried doing the same steps, but once I have highlighted the area on the object. Do I need to need anything else? It's not masking the object . I still see the full clip. I am using Vegas pro 15. Any tips?

How would you instant crop a green screen for example without having to mask?
you need to mask or either have an expensive software, your best bet is to mask manually
i dont get why u have 2 layers of the guy? oesnt majke sense why not just 1?

How do you move the dots so smoothly ? mine go crazy and move so much it ruins the mask, any tips ?
Are you using a physical mouse or a laptop pad? Physical mouse makes it easier, otherwise just work slow take your time. Probably seems fast because I've been doing them for years. It's a time consuming process.
@@AListProductions No, i know, i'm using mouse and i know that it's a very slow process, but when i slightly try to move it, the dot just jumps a lot of space, and breaks everything, i tried using even more dots but it's the same, when i try to move it, it just jumps a lot
@@nazallion What version of Vegas are you using? And are you sure you're on the correct setting for editing the points? (the placing points and editing are different areas, close to eachother but not the same)

Nvm i found it. If someone else are looking: Show properties > Paths > Switch to negative

As for the clips that you use in your trailers, where do you get them? Do you get the source videos off of youtube, or do you buy the movies and do like a screen capture or something like that? Thanks :)

What do you mean?
It's not moving accurately. I mean the "dot". It moves very big distances so I can't make an accurate mask.

Bro, why can't I find that rectangular selection box on the left corner?
Are you using Sony Vegas Pro? or Edit. Edit has less functions. You can restore your windows by pressing view ... layouts... default layouts.

If you mess up with one dot do you just undo?
Yes, or you can finish the entire mask and switch to the alternate tool and just adjust it.

Are you sure you're not accidentally creating multiple unfinished masks? For example if you mask half of something but mis click to starting a new mask when the mask is "complete" it will look finished but nothing will happen because you actaully have incomplete masks. Email me a video or some screen caps.

My problem is my video is a heart but not fully colored in and i want the heart to go over my clip but the inside if my heart is still back I can't get it to be cropped with the rest .

Whats the issue? Once you start the mask continue making points till it connects as a full circle (360)
AYANA GET OFF MY ACOUNT you have to click the anchor point everytime you move the veiw, if not? It wont be a complete crop. Also, are you looking at the crop window or the preview window? Ive done the same thing. Your effect will take place on the preview window not the crop/pan window
