I feel like Igli is the closest to me watching this show - I'm also in the 'one of the best shows I've ever seen' camp, and I can tell you, it's BETTER on rewatch. When you can focus on the heart of the story, not on background ghosts or scares, and notice all the details and foreshadowing, it's amazing. And this episode is a large part of that, because when you have the hindsight as to what Olivia was going through so much of it hits differently, same as everything about the Bent-Neck Lady does after Nellie's episode. And even though Katie Parker as Poppy has a relatively small role on this show, she's still one of my favourite things about it. Her monologue about her kids dying still gives me goosebumps.
I don't know if they ever clarified who takes Abigail's hand at the end; I think the main theories are that it's either a young Hazel Hill or her grandmother (Mr. Dudley's mother).
This show is so good because it made the audience just as tone-deaf to poor Luke as everyone else in the house. Through 9 episodes no one believes that Abigail is real even though he constantly tells them over and over again. It is a revealing look at how many times children are shut down, dismissed, and ignored but we always tell them to "Come talk to us." What's the point? We don't listen anyway, but we are surprised when our kids turn to drugs to escape a reality that doesn't welcome or listen to them.
yes!! the audience always gets irritated at the dad telling the kids that the ghosts and weird stuff is all in their heads or has a logical explanation, but the audience turns around, sees abigail, and says to luke “abigail is a ghost”. this part of the show is so good because it reminds the audience that they would do the same because the audience already HAS. it adds on to luke’s trauma because in a metaphorical way, we -the audience- basically say to his face that we don’t believe him; and we actually SEE abigail which the others do not. tldr; the audience is luke’s biggest op 🤭
blake you have to understand hugh’s first instinct was to get the kids to safety; which is what he should’ve done. he doesn’t know what the house is doing to her or the extent of how it’s preying on her so he didn’t know what was happening only that he needed to get them away first. poppy killed her own kids; so she’s using olivia’s vulnerability and sensitivity to prey on that and have her think that killing her own kids is the only way to keep them safe. (corey picked up that it was the boy in the wheelchair but he was also the one banging on the wall in shirley’s room.) poppy’s truly the only evil one because you’re right; everyone is either a spectator or tried to help like hazel. (william didn’t do anything all he wanted was his hat and the others didn’t cause any physical harm.) abigail is real. if you listened closely to mrs. dudley, she talks about not letting her daughter out/come to the house. the show does a good job at making her seem like a ghost because luke really is the only one who saw her and spoke to her prior to this episode. so liv actually did kill her.
One note, Poppy wasn't evil, she was insane and the house fed on that and corrupted her, just like the house corrupted Olivia by using Poppy. Both Poppy, Mr. Hill (who was also on the asylum and endedup locking himself inside the walls), Nell, Luke and to some extent Theo were the most vulnerable due to being more "sensitive" and the house preyed on that. The only pure evil thing is the house itself. The people who lived there and died were willing and unwilling victims of the house.
@@daytrippera the biggest reason why nell and luke were the ones “chosen” was because they were young enough. the other siblings were already “tainted” by the world aka it was too late for olivia to save them. but luke and nell were only six, and they weren’t “tainted” yet
I think if we go back to the little poem Poppy tells Hugh in the next episode we can pinpoint the moment the house became so predatory. The first Hill ended up killing the original owners of the house, all of them, before taking up residents there. I think that tainted the house, and the Hills forever.
I understand what Blake is saying about Haugh going back for Olivia but his first priority in that moment was to get the kids to safety, so I don't fault him for just leaving
@@RaggedyPackWill you also please do The Fall of The House of Usher after Bly Manor & Midnight Mass..? Carla Guigino (Olivia) is perfection in it! Along with the rest of the cast of course. Just discovered y’all yesterday from this Hill House reactions, y’all are great!
Guys, Abigail was mentioned by Mr. Dudley in an earlier episode. The Dudleys had a second child after the first one died. Abigail was assumed to be a ghost child by the family. This episode is when we find out that she is real. Then, Olivia kills her.
@@tealhiid yeah, i was so surprised that the guys didn’t realize that abigail was real (at least that’s what it seemed like to me) especially corey since he’s so observant haha
There is nothing that says the woman was Abigail mom. As far as we know here, the woman was just someone part of the house & now Abigail is part of it to...
Actually, that's Abigail's grandmother. One of the parents (the dad, I think) told them a story about how she would wander in the woods and was chased by dogs even though there weren't any.
That’s why dialogue is so important. You have to listen to Mr. Dudley’s monologue and you pick up on it. That being said I don’t think I realized it until the third time I watched it.
Poppy was already insane before she was in the house. This story was told by Mrs. Dudley to Liv. She was in an institution and met her husband there. Poppy is the only evil spirit in the house. The others do nothing or even try to help. But you can't really say evil with Poppy, because she's just crazy. Easy game for the house. The conversation between Liv and Mrs. Dudley at the beginning of the episode should show what happens when you don't live out your emotions, but swallow them. At some point, everything just bursts out at once and it rains stones. That was a reflection of what the father is responsible for. He remains silent all these years with the result that everything has gotten worse, which led to the death of Nell, to Luke's drug addiction, Stevens fear of loss loved ones to mental sickness, Sherryl becomes the ice queen and Theo builds walls. In his effort to protect his children through silence, the father has made everything worse. He prepared the way for the house.
Omg I had NO idea that the dad is Eliot from E.T.! His acting as a kid in that movie is so good, and it's a fun movie. Also a baby Drew Berrymore! Def worth watching as a classic
The problem with Emmy's is that, at the time this aired, Netflix series weren't eligible for an Emmy, because Netflix isn't a TV show; it's a streaming show, so it didn't qualify. I think a year (or two) after this show, people agreed that streaming shows should be rated in the same way as TV shows on regular channels and the eligibility for streaming shows were included for the Emmy's. So in that sense this show paved the way for other shows. Also, if you like these kinds of shows, you may want to watch _Midnight Mass_ later, which is another Mike Flanagan Netflix series. That one doesn't have nearly as many jumpscares as Hill House, but it has the same disheartening, oppressive and suspenseful atmosphere, not to mention the stellar acting, storytelling and dialogues. Blake would've appreciated it if you'd watched that one instead of Hill House ;) I personally had trouble getting through Bly Manor, but perhaps that's more because that storyline and characters didn't connect as much with me as Hill House and Midnight Mass.
Since I know you guys have already seen the finally, I want to explain Abigail and Poppy. For Abigail, if you were to rewatch the monologue by Mr. Dudley when he was talking to Hugh, he did say that they had a second daughter that isn't allowed at Hill House. It's pretty common for people to miss this detail. I did the first time I watched. Mr. Dudley also mentions that his mother worked at Hill House and died there. I believe that's who we see taking ghost Abigail's hand after she dies. As for Poppy, I don't think she's any more powerful than any of the other ghosts. I just think she's more menacing due to the fact that she was mentally unstable in life. If you recall Mrs. Dudley's conversation with Steve when he was checking out the dressing table he wanted to finish for his Mom, after finding the photo of Poppy in the drawer, she told him how she was clinically insane and that she and Mr. Hill had met in the insane asylum. I'm not sure, but I suspect that Poppy may have killed her own children using the same flawed reasoning she was passing on to Olivia. Great reaction, as always. Can't wait to see the finale!
the woman that takes Abigails Hand is Hazel Hill in her young form; she’s credited as such in the episode, you can see a picture of her on a mantle as well, and Mike Flanagan confirmed it in an interview. It’s pretty confusing though, I’m not even sure why the scene IS there, without the credits you‘d never know is Hazel and it has no bearing on the story that it’s her
So incredibly stoked to watch y'all react to this one. Entirely in the past, not a bit of future timeline other than the glimpses Olivia gets. It's so good!
I have seen a lot of reactions but I've never seen 4 people MORE CONFUSED about who Abigail actually is or if she is even real or a ghost. Lmao it's both frustrating and hilarious. Love the reactions guys.
Does remind me when we lived in Hawaii and my siblings kept talking about this little kid that would be in the house when they got home from school(we lived on military base on Oahu, so never locked doors, and their school was in our backyard, literally) and we didn't believe them until I was home sick and this little boy, waltzed in, and sat down on the chair and asked me what I was doing here. He lived a few cul-de-sacs down, and had absent minded parents. 😂
And Fall of the House of Usher, especially since I they were talking about Edgar Allen Poe in a different video not too long ago, so some of them will be familiar enough with the stories to pick up on the kool details.
@@Raven_Luna_Tick I think you're right, I haven't seen it myself but some people say that the actress confirmed on a post on Instagram that it is in fact Hazel Hill.
I hope this isn't a general spoiler, but for the sake of Blake's poor heart: the Nell jumpscare from the last episode was worldclass, unsurpassed (so far) in other Flanagan projects. There will be other jumpscares, but you can rest easy knowing you survived the worst (best!) one
Is Blake at least enjoying the story? Once you get past the horror aspect and jump scares, it’s a beautifully tragic story, I hope Blake’s at least enjoying those parts.
Remember, Poppy was in an asylum when she met her husband. The reason she's the way she is, is because she's feeding on Olivia's fears and insecurities about her children, and she switches between being old and young and beautiful to show how easy it is to manipulate people. Also, Abigail was very much a real child and the whole show does a really good job of making you think she's a ghost until the moment she starts foaming. In one episode, the housekeepers talked about how they keep her from the world to keep her safe so the only time she's out is when she sneaks out. Olivia actually kills her with the rat poison.
Mr. Dudley tells Hugh about losing their first child. I think that's made Mrs. Dudley overprotective and that's why she talks that way to Olivia, unintentionally playing into her paranoia and Poppy's manipulation. The Dudley's dead child was a still born baby. Not Abigail's age. Poppy was mentally ill when she married William and came to Hill House. She tells Olivia about watching her kids die terribly. William disappeared, he being the guy who bricked himself in the wall. I think it broke her completely. Interesting side note, the way Poppy described her children's conditions and death, lines up with long term exposure to black mold, which Hugh finds in the walls of Hill House.
A cool reddit theory about Poppy is that she had a touch of what Olivia had and that's why she was committed. So, it made Poppy extremely vulnerable to the House.
i love the actress who plays poppy!!! she is in fall of the house of usher, which PLEASE add that to your list, it is my next favorite after this show!!!
I hope you'll react to one of the UA-cam videos that shows all the ghosts hidden throughout the series. This series tops anything I've ever seen, it's just so good. I'm excited for you to see the finale, but sad that it's the last one. After watching this episode I felt so bad for Olivia, the happiness she felt at the beginning, then what that house had done to her, and the sadness that took over. This wasn't her fault...this house is diseased. Great reaction guys!! ~Dawne

Ghost Abigail is led by her grandmother.
blake you have to understand hugh’s first instinct was to get the kids to safety; which is what he should’ve done. he doesn’t know what the house is doing to her or the extent of how it’s preying on her so he didn’t know what was happening only that he needed to get them away first.
poppy killed her own kids; so she’s using olivia’s vulnerability and sensitivity to prey on that and have her think that killing her own kids is the only way to keep them safe. (corey picked up that it was the boy in the wheelchair but he was also the one banging on the wall in shirley’s room.) poppy’s truly the only evil one because you’re right; everyone is either a spectator or tried to help like hazel. (william didn’t do anything all he wanted was his hat and the others didn’t cause any physical harm.)
abigail is real. if you listened closely to mrs. dudley, she talks about not letting her daughter out/come to the house. the show does a good job at making her seem like a ghost because luke really is the only one who saw her and spoke to her prior to this episode. so liv actually did kill her.
Carla Gugino is AMAZING
"You guys go on without me."😢 Welcome to the heartbreak! Can't wait to see you react to the ending. Great work, guys.
Igli tearing up had me tearing up 🥺💔
Another great reaction guys 👏🏻
I understand what Blake is saying about Haugh going back for Olivia but his first priority in that moment was to get the kids to safety, so I don't fault him for just leaving
Clara said that Poppy was clinically insane … so I guess she’s like that ever since she was born
This is an Olivia-centric episode, and we get to see how the house affected her.
Igli deserves a hug, Olivia is such a tragic character
Two episodes left, Blake! Oh wait. Are you guys reacting to Bly Manor and Midnight Mass? Both less scarier so Blake can handle it 100%.
Yes
Midnight Mass is so good. Looking forward to that one!
After this show, Bly Manor was boring af. Was a decent story, but definitely lacked the scare factor that this show had.
Bly manor sucked tbh.. midnight mass was fine. They're both nowhere NEAR the calibre of hill house. Imo.@@boznik7
Wow. They hadn’t put it together yet, but it becomes clear in the next episode. But way to be a spoiler.
@@bknsty14 I feel like it was pretty obvious when you see her dead body and then see Olivia talking to her ghost.
@@bknsty14I mean everyone I know and every reaction I've seen understood that Abigail was not a ghost by the end of this episode.
@@tealhiid yeah, i was so surprised that the guys didn’t realize that abigail was real (at least that’s what it seemed like to me) especially corey since he’s so observant haha
This is my favorite episode, boys. This was Olivia's episode. The ending almost had me in tears
@@kflowers8276 ah yes, that makes sense it would be her to take care of Abigail. Didnt think about that, thanks for letting me know! :)
@@kflowers8276 that's kool and all but I feel like this is kinda spoilery cuz they haven't realized this yet
@@CamillaDrakenborg 👍🏾 I'd watched the show multiple times before I caught that. ☺️
That’s why dialogue is so important. You have to listen to Mr. Dudley’s monologue and you pick up on it. That being said I don’t think I realized it until the third time I watched it.
The Dudley family adds such an amazong layer to this story. Took me a few watches to actually catch it was her name being called from the sick bed.
Why Blake is always looking everywhere but the screen and seems like he’s in actual physical pain 😂
Blake would've appreciated it if you'd watched that one instead of Hill House ;)
I personally had trouble getting through Bly Manor, but perhaps that's more because that storyline and characters didn't connect as much with me as Hill House and Midnight Mass.
It’s pretty confusing though, I’m not even sure why the scene IS there, without the credits you‘d never know is Hazel and it has no bearing on the story that it’s her
@@ginster458 Ah, okay. Thanks for clearing that up.
35:53 Istg I was crying along with Igli by the ending, and then Olivia goes "dOn't bE sO dramAtiC" loll
So incredibly stoked to watch y'all react to this one. Entirely in the past, not a bit of future timeline other than the glimpses Olivia gets. It's so good!
the end of episode 9 leaves me with such complicated emotions, what good storytelling
I have seen a lot of reactions but I've never seen 4 people MORE CONFUSED about who Abigail actually is or if she is even real or a ghost. Lmao it's both frustrating and hilarious. Love the reactions guys.
Thank you? - Blake
@@RaggedyPack No problem lol, love you guys!!
Abigail is the house and the servant, confirmed?!? 😮 😂
Iv watched this series twice over and you guys still spotted ghosts in the back I never saw before 😂Corey’s got a good eye
Totally forgot this was coming today, excited. After Bly Manor, you should check out Midnight Mass.
Midnight mass was awesome. I enjoyed it more than bly manor
And Fall of the House of Usher, especially since I they were talking about Edgar Allen Poe in a different video not too long ago, so some of them will be familiar enough with the stories to pick up on the kool details.
The music in this show is beautiful, but at the same time it's sad too ❤️🥺 And it fits very well to the acting 😊
It would be so evil, but if I was one of these guys I’d have a “ghost” hiding in the background of my room.
Is Blake ok? You’re gonna pack up a woman who just tried to kill your kids in the car with them? He did come back after the kids were secure.
too bad it was too late 😔
@@victoriab98of course it’s too bad but he made the right decision
Abigails ghost walks away with a younger "normal" looking Hazel Hill.
I though it was her grandma, the one Mr Dudley said died after being "scattered" and running around the woods giggling and stuff.
@@Lii170 I did consider that it might have been Grandma Dudley, but the clothing the ghost wears is just a little to fancy for a servant.
@@Raven_Luna_Tick I think you're right, I haven't seen it myself but some people say that the actress confirmed on a post on Instagram that it is in fact Hazel Hill.
I love this episode so much but also it makes me so sad that there’s only one left!
this episode hits so hard 😭
The kids went straight Cheaper by the Dozen on the dad As soon as Olivia left lol 😂😂😂
When I saw that episode when it came out it scared me so bad I spilled my drink on my bed.
Go back and listen carefully to the conversation with Olivia and Mrs. Dudley
Is Blake at least enjoying the story? Once you get past the horror aspect and jump scares, it’s a beautifully tragic story, I hope Blake’s at least enjoying those parts.
I believe he is -Corey
Someone tell Blake I'd marry him but he's a wimp. Love him.
Love how much most of you are loving this..looking forward to the finale next week XO
Was looking forward to this. Right on time! Thank you guys for being consistently awesome!
yoooo if yall are planning on continuing over to Bly, then I really hope you watch Midnight Mass too!! I'd be SO HYPED to watch yall react to it 🤩
Can't wait for you all to see the final episode. Somebody restrain Blake's arms 😉 🤣
Can’t wait for you to watch Bly Manor next 😍
Remember, Poppy was in an asylum when she met her husband. The reason she's the way she is, is because she's feeding on Olivia's fears and insecurities about her children, and she switches between being old and young and beautiful to show how easy it is to manipulate people. Also, Abigail was very much a real child and the whole show does a really good job of making you think she's a ghost until the moment she starts foaming. In one episode, the housekeepers talked about how they keep her from the world to keep her safe so the only time she's out is when she sneaks out. Olivia actually kills her with the rat poison.
I don't think you should have said some of this, it feels very spoilery to me. I hope they haven't read your comment before watching the last episode.
Not every time someone tries to find a logical explanation for something is gaslighting :P
love to see the mike flanagan praise
This show stops being scary and just gets depressing tbh 😂😭
Hazel is like that, because she is just a kind old lady. Poppy is wild tho. I mean, not all ghoust here are evil.
i love the actress who plays poppy!!! she is in fall of the house of usher, which PLEASE add that to your list, it is my next favorite after this show!!!
~Dawne
Im not ready for y'all to finish this, but still so excited for the conclusion next week!
You guys all realized Abigail was a real, live, human girl by the end of this episode, right?
And she had rabies, the poor thing. 😂
The woman that took Abigail’s hand was the young version of Hazel, in case someone else hadn’t commented it yet 😅
Or Mr. Dudley's mother. It is not really confirmed anywhere.

Imo the saddest episode, broke my fucking heart 😭

Poppy was already a bit off her rocker, so her and the house are perfect for each other. The ghosts are as they were in life, so Liv really was suffering from mental illness. Should be wprking outside on this lovely day, but I started watching this playlist with my coffee and now I gotta finish it. 😂
