    crazy how great Johnny M is. Every time I hear him go at it the hair on my arms and shoulders stand up. I was 19 in 1970 and he brings me back to those days every time! Every fucking note means something... Awesome.

    I first heard JM on a couple of recordings with Miles. I have almost every recording that he was part of. I marvel at his ability to still perform at his age. He is and always has been one of my favorite musicians. Bravo maestro!

    That is fucking marvellous! Always loved this track, full of vibe and atmosphere. When John starts shredding, he's so youthful (even now in 2024, in his 80s!) And his note selection has always been absolutely extraordinary and fascinating.

    Every musician needs to learn this tune. Victor does a way-over-the-top solo while John M. just smiles and plays along.

      Chick is the clock ... he's in the pocket ... whilst John takes off, goes soloing, does his thang and always finds back to the groove ....but the drummer ... he's a little shakey and even Wooten looses track in some moments ... I guess playing in the presence of greatness, of giants .. ain't that easy ....

    Nothing wrong with his hands brother.... This is F**KING awesome footage... I knew he played there with chick for a week or two and was sorry I couldn't make it... This is the next best thing... Damn, how he gets up to that speed still amazes me... Thanks for uploading these videos... Just awesome chops and speed from McLaughlin... I was hoping that Chick would release all the footage from that month long gig he did at the Blue Note!... This video is excellent... Thanks! Thanks! & Thanks again!!!

      I was at this show and McLaughlin played great as always. He did 3 or nights with this lineup and a duo show with Chick before this. Chick was actually at the blue note for about 2 1/2 months..80 shows in total. McLaughlin is my favorite guitar player so no way was I missing this. I also caught the Miles tribute Chick did with Mike Stern..that was great but this show blew it away. Though I gotta say that John's show here at town hall last month was my fave show of the year. The Mahavishnu tunes were like a dream come true hearing all of them live with the awesome band he had as well as Jimmy Herring's band also doing the 3rd set of all Mahavishnu with John's band. It was literally like a religious experience gettin to finally hear all the Mahavishnu tunes I grew up on live in front of me. So wish he wasn't retiring..he played phenomenally!! But he has said he'll still do the occasional gigs here and there so hoping he comes back at some point. Seen him around 30 times over the years and this was definitely one of my fave times seeing him.

    John is one of my biggest heroes. But I would like to hear him get back to the tone he had on 'Electric Guitarist' and 'Electric Dreams' (1978/79), his finest guitar tone ever, in my opinion. I never quite liked the tone he's had since he started to play the PRS although I'm sure it's a fine guitar!

    • @4Corners57
      @4Corners57  7 років тому +2

      I agree. His more modern tone is either a little too synthesized or too "smooth jazz". He needs an edge.

    I love the bass and first saw Victor Wooten years ago with Bala Fleck. He’s a wonderful player with great creativity and percussive drive. In this setting, however, I think John Patitucci would have been a better fit, with both the chops and feel to match the setting. In an ideal world, Jaco would have also been around to sit in.

      Carizmojones Which makes it even sadder that John has performed with Victor Wooten for the first time only recently. They could have collaborated many times already, yet things only materialized now, literally right before John's retirement. The smile on his face during Victor's bass solo says it all. Too bad. Old age has taken yet another legend from us 😔. Let's hope that others like Chick or Herbie aren't being plagued by arthritis as well..

    His hands might be giving him some problem, but Benson is the one with hand problems. I don't know how often Mclaughlin plays out, but Benson is touring. I have commented before on his sound....hate it! He is and always will be great and one of my favorites. But damn he needs to get a Blu amp or something. Jennifer Batten uses them and they are great AND portable. I just don't like his sound anymore. And i don't like that PRS he is playing. Sounds like one of those damn DGT models. Sounds good for Grissom but crappy in John's hands.

    McLaughlin is one of my favorite guitarist. He is still great. Still has the chops. But that tone is god awful. I remember The Gibson double neck and Marshall stack at the Ford Auditorium in Detroit 1972. I remember the Mesa/Boogie amps at the Masonic Temple. I remember him BLOWING a Marshall stack at Ann Arbor, MI. The love, devotion, surrender tour with Carlos Santana. Please find an amp that brings out that old fire........Cause as much as I love your playing...........your sound is not good.

      Tim I can't agree more with your comment, I mean, he doesn't even know what the fuck he's doing there, his style is not fussion, jazz or anything that can match with John's style or mahavishnu's, he's a joke

      The promoters are hoping you don't know more or lack there of, than they do about music and musicians...but alas, we do know more than them.'

    What a lame version this is. Even making allowances that they would not have rehearsed much, this is poor, especially from Lenny White. Do your homework guys! I was at Chick's 70th anniversary at the Blue Note when Gail Moran came on and they did Smile of the Beyond, and Brian Blade blew up a storm on the drums. Proper respect for the music

    I hate overrated Bass playing, typical for Jazz Music. And the guitar player does nothing, and he is the leader, lots of keyboards, typical Jazz Music. Not my style. Hipster things
