So just to clarify, Alaska's orientation of the Big Dipper was correct. The North Star is not a part of the constellation itself and can be located by drawing a line through the two stars at the edge of the Big Dipper's 'cup' which is on the opposite side from the 'handle' and following it from the star from the pair that is on the 'lip' of the cup.
I’m a native of South Carolina so I’m probably a bit biased because I like my state flag. The reason why the flag has a palmetto tree on it is because of an attempted naval invasion by the British in Charleston harbor in 1776. The only defense the harbor had at the time was a fort made of palmetto logs. If that had fallen, the U.S. war for independence would have probably been lost.
Technically there is one mistake. The Florida flag is more based on the Spanish-based Cross of Burgundy. Also, Utah’s new flag will be officially used starting next year.
Yea, Alabama’s flag is based off the fact that southern Alabama was once part of Spanish Florida. That said, Florida has more claim in my opinion to the Red Cross flag then Alabama ever has due to historical context
@@insanity693 Alabama’s a bit more complicated because some evidence suggests it might have some Confederate origins. This is why people assume the same of Florida’s, which never fails to irk me.
@@stevenchoza6391 that may be true, but it doesn’t change the fact that Alabama does a have a claim to the flag design due to part of its territory being old Spanish Florida. Florida it self has always had a superior claim to it in that regard, but Alabama still has a claim none the less.

To answer your question about the meaning of Scotland’s flag (which probably inspired Alabama’s), Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, was crucified on an X-shaped cross.
Apparently, Oklahoma's second flag was almost what you described back in 1925-1941. Then they changed the shade of blue, and added the word "Oklahoma" in an effort to combat widespread illiteracy... but there's no real evidence it helped. Still, it stayed through two more shade changes. Yeah... Florida's the state I've lived in since I was a baby. It hasn't changed its basic concept -- the Great Seal on a saltire -- since 1900, and they quickly made it worse by CGP Grey's standards by changing said seal to include the state's name for the first time since its pre-statehood days. Its first flag as a state was just the seal, no saltire.
Just for clarification, North and South Carolina were never one state; they were one colony before 1712 and were two colonies for many decades before admitted to the Union in 1788 (SC) and 1789 (NC).
25:38 did not touch on WHY the union jack was there as that is technically the last Official Kingdom of Hawaii flag , it was adopted duirng (iirc) the war of 1812 to show neutrality to Hawaii's buggest economic partners, the United States and Great Britain, who were at war at the time , hence why it combines BOTH flags
Fun fact, Russia is also represented in the flag as the stripes are the colours of Russia. So, it actually represents the 3 major powers around it at the time.

So the reason we here in Arizona have the copper star is because we lead the country in copper production. We also produce a substantial portion of the country's molybdenum as a byproduct of copper mining.
Yeehaw friendos, There is one thing the guy didn't mention about my flag, the single star, we're called 'the Lone Star state' which, and the white for purity, red for courage, and blue for loyalty
As someone very much into flag design, I take a lot of issue with some of Grey's choices. Particularly when it comes to California and Colorado, he was far harsher than necessary, and his own biases pushing NC much higher up than they deserve is frustrating, and with South Carolina, a flag that is fantastic and his design is just straight up worse by comparison, putting it down in D feels ridiculous I've also come around to the option that text is not inherently a flag ruiner; if the rest of the design is good then text doesn't intrinsically ruin the flag, like with California or Mississippi. California especially with it's text is calling back to their first flag and an important, if brief, part of their history.
I think the issue with his tier list is that he assigns general rules for flag design (don't use words, keep the design very simple and easily recognizable from a distance, etc) and then grades flags based on how they adhere to those rules, rather than a more subjective sense for the aesthetics of the individual flag. Speaking as a Pennsylvanian, I've seen proposed redesigns, and I'd rather we keep our current one over most. They meet his standards (simple color scheme, simple design, obvious symbology, more easily recognizable)... in fact, the problem is that they meet his standards *too well.* They feel artificial because they're ultimately designed the same way he decides good flags (follow this ruleset even when it makes the flag less striking or diminishes its history) and it makes them feel phoned in. Our flag isn't good, but it's better than some minimalist design that's just a keystone arch.
The fault wIth Grey and many vexillology geeks is that they zealously follow the five rules of flag design. The rules are meant to be a guide, but they aren't the end all be all because "good design" isn't objective in any way possible. Rules are fine to break if breaking them makes a unique and well designed flag, meanwhile following them all doesn't matter in the end if all it creates is a bland, uninspired flag. The recent flag redesigns in Mississippi and Utah prove just how following the rules don't matter. Mississippi made a beautiful, meaningful, flag that was quickly adopted by the people within that state despite breaking the five rules. Utah faithfully followed the rules yet the flag is just a boring, corporate-looking logo that will probably be replaced again in a decade.
When you try to remember which flag had an animal silhouette, correctly guess Wyoming, then un-correct yourself by settling on Montana, literally one of the first flags Grey had gone over, and the first one he put front and centre, less than two minutes prior
As a Minnesotan, I wholly agree with Grey's assessment of the current flag of Minnesota, but I strongly oppose his proposal for a replacement (along with most other recent proposals that have been made for a new flag for Minnesota). The thing about Minnesota's flag woes is that there is a perfectly viable proposal for a new flag that was first proposed in 1989: The North Star Flag (there is an image in the "Criticism and calls for redesign" section of Wikipedia's article about the flag of Minnesota, if anyone's interested). The main reason why the Minnesota Legislature refused to adopt the North Star Flag was because the legislators felt the current flag was "tradition" (weird, considering the current version was adopted six years before the North Star Flag was proposed) and should be preserved for that reason. Since that time, there have been a flood of new proposals, but the North Star Flag still remains the most popular proposal, and all any other proposals have been doing is fracturing the support base for adopting a new flag. IMO, all of the support for changing Minnesota's flag should be aligned behind the North Star Flag, or else the change will never happen. One proposal I really like involves adopting the North Star Flag as state flag, making the current flag a gubernatorial standard, and bringing back the 1893 flag as a "state banner."
Personally, I think the name works with the design. I also didn't realize how many states chose to use blue as a base color. I thought there were a lot more red flags.
native of Georgia I'm pretty sure our flag has changed the most out of all of them, it was the classic confederate battle flag with that same crest on it. funny how it still is a battle flag now
Here’s the thing about his reasoning for South Carolina being low, the palmetto and crescent moon are incredibly important to its states history. The palmetto was incredibly important in the defense of fort sumpter and the crescent moon was a symbol worn by soldiers, and used by Charleston to know if British were coming.
As a Kansan, it's simple and shows off our history, so you can't blame us. But if we modified it, it would be nice but I like ours. Which could use a sunflower more.
Georgia should probably be the next state to change its flag. They should change it because the design that the seal is placed on is the main flag of the Confederacy (the Stars and Bars) during the Civil War. If Mississippi ditched the popular Confederate flag (the flag of the First Virginia Battalion, Lee's Army) in favour of the magnolia flower, then why doesn't Georgia ditch their Confederate flag?
Well, in my opinion, it should be up to the people which flag they want their state to have. Even if the states remove or change all confederate symbols. It’s not like they can do anything about people flying confederate flags going down the highway or in their front yards.
@Insanity It should be their choice, but flying a Confederate-derived design is questionable considering they're states and the Confederacy was a bunch of rebels and traitors fighting to split the Union because they lost an election. It's a dumb hill to die on when they've got so much history to call on outside of those four years where their ancestors shot at their countrymen.
@@TheAngryXenite fair enough, but you operate under the assumption that everyone who fought for the confederacy did so of their own free will. That is not the case. There is a movie called “Free State of Jones” that depicts what I’m talking about quite well. The confederate flag that so many call racist is only a battle flag. In my opinion, that battle flag represents those who fought and died without ever being given a choice in the matter. That flag is their memorial. I say this because I am descended from some of those who were forced to fight. At the time, those who were able to fight yet refused to fight were usually hanged.
Pennsylvania native here. I've done the work and I honestly think we could keep our design with minimal changes. Just blow up the design a bit, make the flag black with the central emblem being made white, and (kind of meming now) make the flag shaped like the state. Because fuck Rhode Island and Ohio being the only ones with irregular flag shapes. I've seen a number of proposed redesigns and they have a tendency to overrely on the Keystone symbol, which makes them feel a bit... artificial. video starts at 5:10, in case you guys wanted a timestap to click to to skip all the intro stuff.
it's kinda adds to it, that Grey actually used to work as teacher. Physics iirc
He must’ve been a horrible teacher considering how petty he is and willing to shut down any criticism.
To answer your question about the meaning of Scotland’s flag (which probably inspired Alabama’s), Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, was crucified on an X-shaped cross.
As a Mississippian I strongly believe that we deserved at least a B! 😂
Same profile amd similar name
Minnesota's new flag is pretty awesome too.
You should watch huggbees roasting the state welcome signs, flags, and license plates
@@doodlebug4360 uhm no? The russian flag has no representation on the flag whatsoever, i mean even if you say its based off of the colors , but the Russian Flag was Withe , Blue, Red , The Kingdom of Hawaii has it White Red Blue,
Plus the Russians and Hawaiian Kingdoms didnt officially interact until 1869 , 26 years after the flag was standardized
My home state, Tennessee, got A tier.
Honestly, I agree, we do have a great flag.
So the reason we here in Arizona have the copper star is because we lead the country in copper production. We also produce a substantial portion of the country's molybdenum as a byproduct of copper mining.
30:04-30:20 HELL YEAH, S-TIER! Totally not biased at all!
Yeah, my state was intense it fell off the bottom and landed back on the top.
S-tier!
I’m an Alaskan and I love our state flag because it’s the Big Dipper and it has a heart warming story behind that the flags makings so um yeah
Personally I think Georgia should replace the top left corner with a Megalodon tooth, the state fossil
Alabama's flag is St. Andrew's Cross (decussate cross, saltire,) in Red it does conflict with a few others so I'd only give it an "A" vs an "S"
I really like the Iowa flag since it's just the French Flag but with more stuff on it which means it's cooler
The flag of Alabama is in honor of its time as part of the Spanish Empire, the flag reflects the design of the original Spanish Imperial Naval ensign
Yeehaw friendos,
There is one thing the guy didn't mention about my flag, the single star, we're called 'the Lone Star state' which, and the white for purity, red for courage, and blue for loyalty
As someone very much into flag design, I take a lot of issue with some of Grey's choices. Particularly when it comes to California and Colorado, he was far harsher than necessary, and his own biases pushing NC much higher up than they deserve is frustrating, and with South Carolina, a flag that is fantastic and his design is just straight up worse by comparison, putting it down in D feels ridiculous
I've also come around to the option that text is not inherently a flag ruiner; if the rest of the design is good then text doesn't intrinsically ruin the flag, like with California or Mississippi.
Thing is, it's HIS tier list, so it's his opinions.
Just gotta say "The Stars at night are big and bright... clap clap clap clap ..."
When you try to remember which flag had an animal silhouette, correctly guess Wyoming, then un-correct yourself by settling on Montana, literally one of the first flags Grey had gone over, and the first one he put front and centre, less than two minutes prior

Wisconsinite here, I wanted to see our flag updated for such a long time and I'm still waiting.
Careful, Grey appears to be a petty individual who goes after reactor type channels by immediately issuing copyright strikes.
...Do you mean "a *petty* individual"?
@@Emmariscobar 😂
Yeah, he gets pretty upset when lazy-ass f&cks sit on their ass to make money off of the actual work of other people. Crazy.
appears to be? for doing it once in I don't know how many years? isn't more likely that there is another reason?
Arkansas - Remove the name, and we'd have a perfect flag.
Personally, I think the name works with the design. I also didn't realize how many states chose to use blue as a base color. I thought there were a lot more red flags.
22:10 West Virginia's flag needs a desperate update
I really like Bhutan's flag, because it has a dragon on it.
native of Georgia I'm pretty sure our flag has changed the most out of all of them, it was the classic confederate battle flag with that same crest on it. funny how it still is a battle flag now
Here’s the thing about his reasoning for South Carolina being low, the palmetto and crescent moon are incredibly important to its states history.
Here's how I'd make the California flag better. Add the word new and give the bear another head
In flag nerd circles most of these are called SOBs: Seals on Bedsheets. Not good.
Shout out to Mississippi and Utah for the glow ups tho
The reason the brown bear in californias flag is scared is because now the california brown bear has gone extinct.
It's been a week now and it's still up, CGPrick definitely targeting vth
4:50 for folks that like to skip the "witty" banter.
As a resident of Idaho, that hurt.
23:00 I personally give it FF Tier because I'm more of a Gray Mane person
Pennsylvania native here. I've done the work and I honestly think we could keep our design with minimal changes. Just blow up the design a bit, make the flag black with the central emblem being made white, and (kind of meming now) make the flag shaped like the state. Because fuck Rhode Island and Ohio being the only ones with irregular flag shapes. I've seen a number of proposed redesigns and they have a tendency to overrely on the Keystone symbol, which makes them feel a bit... artificial.
Also, people keep suggesting truly heinous color schemes. No, bright yellow and navy blue is NOT pleasing to the eye. Please, stop.
As a native from Tennessee, Nate, it is West middle and East Tennessee. I’m from middle Tennessee. I got so angry when you said central Tennessee it’s middle.

Oklahoma, the only state flag to feature tobacco, in other words, a drug.

Pennsylvania flag is commerce
what are the chances
California.
Yay Texas
The New York City flag is better than the state flag. They get rid of the basic blue background.
The Alabama flag is just the flag of England
No, that flag is derived from the cross of burgundy, Which is a flag of the old Spanish empire. Parts of Alabama were once part of Spanish Florida, it’s why both Alabama and Florida have a similar flag design.
Hailing from Michigan and I love our flags design.
