Great video man. My main critique would be that the face cam sections feel a bit off, just interrupts the flow a bit from a really entertaining video. Keep up the great work!
Perfect video imo. It’s just perfect. The details, the quality. It ascends what humanity is capable of. This video is proof that this man should become president. #VGGeek2024
Great video mate! First one I watched and loved the editing style as well as the boatload of sound choices. One small nitpick is that green background. It was a kinda distracting, ngl. Still! Great video!!!! Subscribed!
I wonder if the increase in popularity of indie games will eventually encourage Triple A devs to make smaller games or do things that make them seem similar to indies. Dave the Diver has all the signs of being an indie game (such as "Being good" and "Being not call of duty") But had a large team funding it and I wonder if there will be more cases like that one.
Thank fucking God, I'm becoming a indie game developer! Speaking of that, if there any gamers out there that are becoming a indie game developer or be part of a indie/AA game studio, don't make a MMO rpg, or a Stardew Valley-like/cozy farming Simulator, or souls-like, or rouge-like (especially Vampire Survivors ones or bullet hell/heaven ones), or mascot horror, or open world, or metroid-vania, or walking Simulator as your first game project that you made. Try remaking games or make a knock-off version of a game like pac man, snake, angry birds, tetris, cut the rope, or better, make a fan game of Fnaf, Sonic, or Dark Deception. Start something small, then build your way up to improve your creativity, 2d/3d modeling, coding, and development skills.
I don't think indie games are consistently better than AAA games, it's just that every AAA game gets hyped up to a large audience and often disappoints. Bad indie games just get overlooked and not played while the good indie games are talked about a lot more. Not to mention, there are a lot more indie games out there than AAA games.
Don't forget that AAA titles also have higher expectations because they costed a fuck ton of money to make. Indie games? Some guy in a basement made it. Even if it's a little sucky, ppl won't get mad at it.
Good video! I think you are close to the cause of the Indie Explosion, but are missing the actual key bit here: Accessibility. You actually grazed this ("Anyone can make a game now!"), but it's worth more then a line. Until Unity showed up, making games was fucking hard. So fucking hard. You either had to wield a commercial engine (which was so hard at the time), or you needed to build your own (good luck with that!). Before this, if you wanted to make a game and were kind of a doofus, you did your best with the Starcraft Map Editor - the only accessible 'game engine' for 15 years. The Indie Explosion was paved by Unity - by a toolset that was substantially more accessible then what came before it and is probably now going to be continued by Godot as a general purpose tool since Unity sucks ass now. Full credit to things like GameMaker Studio and RPG Maker as well - other engines focusing on accessibility and ease of creation. Making games is still hard, but it's not, 'You better understand 3D vector math and DirectX implementations'-kind of hard any more. Also, a video about the timeline of Indies with no mention of Braid??? Tsk Tsk :P
I am richard nixon and I approve this message

Hey VGNerd. This is a wonderful video, especially for those that are fans of indie games and their history!
Yea, I really find VGdork (it just tried auto correcting to burien) as underrated quality content.

Good take. Yeah the actual game-making is a side of the timeline that I'm not very familiar with.
