Great One Brother Otis!
Thanks Otis!
@@roscoenyc Stay safe out there, Roscoe!
Hank is a Martin D-28 and not a D-45. Roscoe just misspoke like we all do sometimes. Lets not make a big deal out of it.
Otis, I do like to here the story of `Hank´, maybe you have more information to share with us.
Whaaat? U recorded Neil in his barn? That is fing cool.
I sense a disturbance in the force.
Much can be lost in translation, but it is the story that matters and this was a good one. 👍
The story is the big deal.
I read about Neil owning Hank's guitar a few years ago....the best dream I ever had, was that I met Neil Young. I mentioned how cool it was that he owned Hank's guitar. Before I knew it, he came back and handed me the guitar to play. I started crying as I strummed those strings. I woke up. It was a good dream.
I just love hearing stories where people are happy. We need an awful lot more to balance the noise in the world!
4 SURE i made a large simple mural in downtown Hamtramck ( in Detroit ) by blocking out an old massive pepsi ad and leaving the word JOY
Amen
We need a knob for more Roscoe.
Thanks guys
Eric Amble helped me survive the 80s!!
Cheers!
in part Eric, him speaking , reminds me of Neil Young [tone and intonation] in the fashion he speaks, and the way he uses his voice.
This was the best Neil Young story yet! Thank you!
I saw Neil Young on a TV show, where he was surrounded by about 9 different acoustic guitars, and each song he played, he used a different guitar. Each one gave a completely different tone, sound and vibe. Talk about a Master. Neil is the Ninja of the accoustic guitar.
Ah! Great story!
Thank you, Otis! 🙏
Much thanks to "Roscoe" for the great story.
Love me some Neil Young 💛🤍
Be good to you! 🤍💛
Thanks Otis! Great Neil stories, so real. Eric is hilarious and he knows how to paint a picture! One of your best✌ " They asked me to stay, I gotta stay..."
Thanks David.
Otis Gibbs, Hello Friend, your after my own heart with Neil Young, to me he is #1 in my eyes as a acoustic guitar and folk type music, thanks to your friend
What a trip. Super funny, great jam.
Neil Young is more than a musician he is an artist and not for the faint of heart.
Sorry, Van Morrison, Roger Waters and Eric Clapton are true artists. Neil doesn´t understand Politics.
And if he's any kind of man, he'll put that guitar in his will to Shelton.
Neil was always one of my favorite musicians but he lost my respect over the past couple of years. Let's hope he redeems himself a bit.
I would say he's more of an artist than a musician. I think of a musician as someone who uses known standards and keeps things within the boundaries. Artists go outside of those boundaries. Innovative artists always bring change that sets new standards. Guitarists who are artists: Berry, B.B. King, McGuinn, George Harrison, Hendrix, Duane Allman, Young, Iommi. Artists change the way things are done. Lots of great guitarists but they didn't change the way the instrument is played. You can do this with every instrument and singer.. there are very few that change things.
The best, most honest and heart felt music related video on UA-cam. SO GREAT that you captured this and posted for the world. KUDOS OTIS!
The sheer and utter joy emitting from Roscoe as he spins this tale of hero worship is one of the best things I have ever seen on the internet. I mean every word of that in the best possible way. Generally, one never believes for a moment that one could possibly meet the people who, without ever knowing you, have such an impact on your life. It is clear the effect this encounter had on him and the lasting impression it made. And Roscoe being a person who does not at all come across as "star struck". Clearly a dude who had been around more than his fair share of famous people. Otis, your channel is great! Not being all that much of a country fan, it is through your channel that I became familiar with Kenny Vaughan's playing and he has become one of my favorite musicians to enjoy. Thanks again for your creating this channel and keep up the excellent work!
glad you enjoyed it!
Crooked Line. One of my favorite albums.
Thanks!!
Love this. Great story and thank you for sharing. I'm also a big Neil Young fan. How cool that you got to work with him and hang. So cool, congrats!!
I really miss my D-28. ❤️ Best acoustic guitar I every owned.
An absolutely fabulous interview regarding the backstories of one of my heros
Thanks for this story. I've been following Roscoe for a while, after hearing his wife's tape recording Blood on the Tracks (see also Mary Lee's Corvette).
I just loved the ending of the story. Now...off to find some Ohio Blue Tip matches and Crooked Line. Cheers.
One of the best interviews yet. I nominate Neil Young as most interesting man in the world after this interview. Owning Hank William’s guitar is enough on its own. Thanks guys for the great stories
Wow, now Eric Ambel! You've got the best musicians as friends! I'd like to hear more stories from Roscoe. He must have lots of them!
Great story-its awesome to know that Neil is an artist chasing the muse in an authentic way no matter what the project. 100% inspiring.
That was awesome!
First heard Neil’s 1st record in high school, started playing guitar after hearing “Cowgirl in the Sand” on 4 Way Street, saw Neil in concert , Linda Ronstadt was the opening act ( with Henley &Frey). I can still kinda get into my patched jeans… Loved this interview, thanks so much!
So much to learn--NS10s!!
Neil has always been authentically Neil . I love that he has his NS10s in hand rubbed wooden cabinets .
Even though I am not a musician and know nothing about instruments nor equipment, I really enjoyed this story and not only because I'm a Neil fan. Great story about a very memorable event.
What an experience to have hanging out and working with your hero.
Been following Eric since his 80's Del Lords days. What a great NYC roots rock band that was. And he's done so much great stuff since then both playing and producing. Look forward to hearing more from him. So many interviewers get in the way of the person they interview. I love the way you just sit back and let them tell their story.
Thank you.
What a great and funny story. I really like Neil’s music and style too. Different by design. I saw him and crazy horse around 1987 in Dallas during their garage band tour. Awesome
Wow. That was a real treat. Incredible retelling of that amazing time. Always loved Neil, then when I heard "On the Beach" I realized just how truly amazing Neil Young is as an artist. Thank you!
Genuinely Authentically Fantastic. Great Editing also .... just super fun. Thank you again Otis!
Hi Otis. This is a top story. Big Neil fan. Thank you for this as always.
A great interview, and love the Batavia, IL mention! Eric is a great storyteller and was always extremely knowledgeable and helpful when I used to frequent the Dr. Z amps forum.
Thanks Ryan.
Hey Roscoe..! And Otis.!
This is the second.. and probably not the last.. time that I’m watching..listening..and lovin this story..!! I have the scenes in my head and fantasizing that I was there… just a fly on the wall… and it’s very cool..👍🏼❤️
Your stories and interviews are so good! Thank you for sharing!
Great Neil Young story. Eric seemed just as much on cloud 9 telling the story as I am sure he was when it happened!
It really was something!
To record Neil would be great in itself. To only be in the presence of Hank’s guitar would be awesome, not to mention having the privilege to play it.
Otis, you thanked me a while back “for giving a damn”. That I do.
While shooting pool earlier in the week, a young lady plugged the jukebox. She asked me to choose the songs. I was gonna turn them on to your music. I don’t understand how all that works, but, this new-fangled rig didn’t have your music in it.
I told them it was BS that your works aren’t recognized & ask their vendor about it. You’ve paid your dues & continue. I do give a damn !!
I hear that! Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a lot more than talent, hard work & paying your dues. Look at Big Star. 🌠 Alex Chilton. 😔
Having a Hank owned anything would be really cool. Cool interview.
Thanks for what you do, and for being Otis.
Thank you so much for this.
That was the best one, Otis. Made me chuckle.
That's my tombstone got it great PURE GOLD
I love this, Otis (and Eric)--thanks.
Damn good one man.
really outstanding,,,,,thanks..... it picked me up!!!!!
Otis..! That is one bad ass cool story..!! Thanks Otis..and Eric.!👍🏼❤️
My pleasure
What a great video! Neil is definitely one of my heroes and Eric is no slouch. Great job Otis!
Thank you.
@@roscoenyc I learned a good lesson from one of your old band mates Frank Funaro, never let a drummer play your guitar. 😂
Fantastic!!! I'm a Neil Young fan, and this is all so cool to hear. thanks so much for posting.
Thank you guys. That’s good stuff.
MOR NEIL...MOR ROSCOE! Thanks Otis
Hell yeah! : )
Amen to that!
Your channel always has great stories and that was a particularly great one.
Wonderful description of the gear!
Huge Neil Young fan but also Steve Earle, Bottle Rockets and Blue Mountain. I bet he has great stories on those guys. "Dog Days" by Blue Mountain is my favorite album of all time. Roscoe produced and played on it.
Thanks Otis for bringing all this to us music lovers. Can't find this great stuff anywhere else.
Thank you!
And Del Lords, Yayhoos, and on and on!!!
Yeah, Bottle Rockets, The Brooklyn Side. Oh my, that must have been something in the moment. You deserve that Michelangelo moment for all your work. I'll be listening.
@@brentpruner Thanks much. Out on tour w Sarah Borges currently for the record I produced for her. We do some of my songs too.
So good I had to watch it twice! Nice one
Love the storytelling. Learning something new. Great job.
This was truly an enjoyable listen.......thank you friends.
" I'd just been married about a year, and I thought, what if they ask me to stay? I'd have to call home and say I gotta stay".
Ha ha. I've been a lifelong Neil Young fan. I've seen him 5 times and the songs he plays on that Martin guitar have always been my favorites.
I love these stories ,
What a great story, Neil Young sounds like a really interesting guy.
Crazy, am listening to this while driving to work And then he says "I'm from a small town outside Chicago called Batavia. I was on my way to Batavia when he said that. Mind blown
❤Thank you so very much Otis! I love your content. Thank you!!!❤
BEST ANALOGY, FOR PASSING A JOINT... EVER 🤣💜
This is a great story thank you so much for sharing. So awesome!
You’re such a great story teller. Awesome
Great Stories! I love Neil.
Not to take the thread all gearhead or anything (self-ignorant or bald-faced enough to pass as honest?),
but ca. 5:40-5:55, he mentions "My guitars, I run sorta what I refer to as a 'resistance' setup, they're not really easy to play...Neil's was very much a resistance setup."
If there's any more audio on that lying around out in the editing room, even just 5-15 seconds connecting that dot a bit, I imagine a few of us would love to hear it!
Player and producer, he also speaks engineer when he wants to. Cut makes sense there, rolling right into another tasty story that exemplifies what the show is all about.
Regardless, many thanks to both of you for getting this down, and out on the web!
Any gearhead chat fallout would more likely take up space on tdpri, or gearpages, or diyaudio or such, I promise?
And thanks for the link I see you just posted! :):):)
By "resistance setup' I was referring to the set up of the guitar. A combination of the neck relief, action and string gauges. For most of my career I've used a set of strings that went from 12 to 56. A few years ago I relaxed into a lighter 11 to 52 set. I like the neck to have a little relief and to have the action not too low. I like the guitar to 'fight back' a little. For me that type of setup works well with my playing. Neil's gauges weren't that heavy but playing Old Black it did feel like a 'resistance setup' to me.
Oh man.....sooo gooood!
What an awesome guy, love this video so much!! His story is gold, and his appreciation
"Imagine if you liked equipment, and didn't have to sell any to get more equipment", hilarious........only rock stars know that feeling.
Very true... Gary Moore's gear is up for auction at the moment, the amount of gear is insane. I have a bunch of gear, but mostly just junk I need to get rid of.
Or professional football team owners.....
Great story. I've always been fascinated by Don Grungio. Love the vids
More barn? Less barn? We need to know!
I think that Neil bought his ranch on the strength of his sales of "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" and "After The Gold Rush." He was already living out there by the time he recorded "Harvest," and a photo of him and the Stray Gators playing in the barn our there is depicted on the back of the album cover.
Neil Young is one of my favorite artists. He’s just cool. He’s just a great songwriter and performer and I’d reckon a great human as well. I’d love to see this place and hang out with him. Now that’d be cool
Awesome story! so cool!
This is priceless.
Otis, Larry Cragg would be an interesting dude to interview. He’s pretty out there. He also has a massive collection of guitars and amps he supplies to top talent when they record here in the Bay. Also was one of the first guys to get into what became the sport of mountain biking in Marin County. Still has a little workshop in Marin.
Larry would be a great interview!
So great to see Roscoe...such a great player himself, so fun to hear him speak as a fan likre the rest of us.Terriffic, thanks Otis
I have always seen Eric’s name in the liner notes on The Bottle Rockets’ albums. It’s great to put a face to the name. I don’t think I knew that he was from the Chicago area. Interesting Neil Young story. Sounds like Neil is doing pretty good for himself.
More Barn!
Great story, thanks!
Just finished up with my D28, working on some new material....and then I visit Otis on my break. Fantastic!🎶💥🎶💥🎶
Hank Williams' herringbone D-28 is in the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.
Hank owned a few guitars Gibson's also. Also Martin's were 10 a penny back then for Hank.
Ha! Roscoe is my dear friend. He's got some great stories.
Cheers Victor!
Hey there Otis,
Someone else may have already chimmed in about the Movie Link you posted:
"Neil Young & Crazy Horse-A Band Of Brotherhood-A Barn". That's not the same Barn that Roscoe is talking about when he was at Neil's long-standing California "Broken Arrow Ranch", outside of Redwood City and San Francisco.
The Barn in the New Movie, "A Band Of Brotherhood-A Barn", is on Neil's newer Colorado Ranch, where Neil and Daryl Hannah live part of the year. They also recently purchased a 117-year-old cottage on a lake near his hometown of Omemee, in Ontario, Canada. According to Neil, he and Daryl "moved back to Canada to an old cottage on the lake" sometime after September 2020. He uses the place as a bit of an isolation chamber. I haven't been able to glean any information about what Neil has done with his Broken Arrow Ranch that he gave to his late wife Pegi, just before she passed in 2016. I'm sure he still owns it, considering all the possessions he had stored there. I believe his son Ben may still be living at Broken Arrow with his caregivers?
Anyway, different Barns, but BOTH are set up for makin' great music. His whole recent latest album, simply called "Barn", is where he recorded it with Crazy Horse 🐎, (with Nils Lofgren back replacing Frank "Poncho" Sampedro, on Guitar, Piano and Accordian in The Horse.
Anyway, just thought some folks might find that tid bit informative?
I hope someday you find someone to tell the famous story about the Barn in California... Out on the lake in a boat and yelling, we need more barn...
Graham has watered down that story enough times to fill the lake they were in.
The reason for The hard R is he is from Canada and in parts of the open plains they talk similar to the Northern USA Plains from Upper Nebraska up and Western parts of the Midwest if you got to ever hear a person from there, Corb Lund and his band with his wife called Corb Lund is very similar.
That barn studio is my end game. Holy grail. 🥹
Ha ! Great story .... :D

I have seen him play that guitar onstage. He told us about the guitar, and did a few songs on it. The tone was like no other.
I love Neil Young and his music. I've been trying for years to play the acoustic guitar like Neil does, and I'm still working on it...maybe someday.....
Otis, you know all the cool kids, don'tcha??
Haha! : )
When you are at a session thats the coolest phrase you want to here..
Go get Hank!!!...too freakin cool..
Love you music obsessed nerd channel otis..Ty...from s.oz
Sick, awful, great.😂😂😂
I’m still laughing. “On my tombstone.”
Thanks
Great freaking story!
Back in the early 90's. My buddy said to me "Neil Young is the Godfather of rock and roll!" I get what he means by that now.
