we had an old kellogg compressor that worked like this except that it had a centrifugal clutch on the engine so when it unloaded the pump stopped turning and the engine could idle slower. the unloader valve had a slight delay so when it kicked the throttle back up it allowed the air to vent for a few seconds so the engine could get up to full speed before the unloader closed. worked really well and didn't use much fuel at all, the engine had a 1 gallon tank and that would run it for 6-8 hours easily. don't remember what engine it had, probably a briggs but it could have been a kohler. big heavy cast iron thing...
Does the stainless steel braided hose need to have a check valve built into it? Or would a stainless steel braided hose without check valve work since the pilot valve already has a check valve built into it? Thanks for all the responses, it has helped me get closer to a finished project!
I'm going to be building a pretty nice compressor myself 13 HP Honda gx390 20 gal tank etc. Setup for natural gas 175 psi pressure. Among other things. Just slowly buying parts for it. The main reason for building it and not. Buying I want to be able to stack stuff on top of it. So I want it to be short to the ground and a cage all the way around it like a generator and a lifting eye to load it I. The back of the truck

What did you use to make the compressor cycle on and off? I’m converting an old electric compressor to gas but the compressor cut off and start up is controlled by electricity?
Its called an unloader check valve. It has a spot for a throttle cable to run the engines throttle. It doesnt unload the compressor like an electric compressor since the engine doesnt turn off when it gets to pressure. It just sends the air coming off the compressor to atmosphere.

The engine should have a throttle to bring the speed up to compress and down when its idling. I think you need to be concerned with having enough horsepower to turn the pump you want to run.

When you install the bull whip throttle control do you need to remove the original throttle return spring on the engine? i.e. Does the engine have all the original springs still installed or does it only have the governor rod installed when using a bull whip cable?

It doesnt need a check valve since the pilot/unloader has a check valve in it.

What's this strong enough to run? Mechanic air tools? Pneumatic construction tools? Or just refill air in tires and run grinders?
It keeps up with half inch gun and small grinders. We run a 1 inch gun to do tires on semi truck and its a little slow but not horrible.
Where did you get the throttle cable/controls to increase rpm when the tank pressure gets low??

Nice, google a pilot unloader check valve and find one that has the fittings you want. They are pretty simple.

All I did was install the throttle cable, and back off the nut where the throttle lever pivots so the lever would move freely. Works great.
