Hi Espen, in 12:14 the text says magnify or peaking doesn’t work with manual focus override; at least with E-M1mk2 and 40-150f2.8 the peaking is working, magnify is not, and I think that is the reason why magnify is disabled in menu when you have mf override active
Ah yes, think you’re right peaking is working with manual override. Think I wrote that too fast after without thinking it through. But I still don’t get why magnify is disabled, as it still works if you left it ‘on’ when you switch to manual using e.g the clutch (even though it’s disabled and says off).
Espen Helland put your camera to C-AF+MF mode and go to MF assist menu, magnify is disabled. Pull the MF clutch back in your lens and go to MF assist menu again, magnify is active. So it is reacting to you current AF mode, it’s bit weird, would be more logical if it had separate setting to all modes. Hope this helps
Thanks Espen. 🤓👍🏻. I’ve set up some similar settings. Also thanks for the info on changing the magnification in magnify view. I didn’t realize this until you mentioned and it was set at a default of 14x which was somewhat limiting. I just changed it to 5x which seems much more practical as a go-to setting. I recently just moved to Olympus and use an EM 1 iii. Im still experimenting. Ive also set up the function lever so position 1 is C-AF and 2 is single point AF. I am playing around with back button focus and I can see the value so I set this up as a default. But I also appreciate that at times it may be valuable to use the shutter release for AF. I noticed last week when out that if I quickly need to change AF target or point then my thumb has to go back and forth between joystick and AEL/AFL Button which can be tricky and it may be more effective for me to use shutter release for focus. So I’ve set up a custom setting (C 4), to switch from Back button focus to shutter release focus. This avoids having to go through all the menu changes and gives me the option to quickly switch if needed. I’ll see how it works. I’ve also set up my ISO button to go into a specific C-AF configuration to capture fast moving subjects. This way if I’m in aperture priority, single AF while capturing general nature and all of a sudden an Osprey shows up, which it has, I can quickly access settings to capture it without fumbling through settings. This works well as I don’t need to remove my eye from finder and it’s a simple button push with my thumb. My sense is i will continue to experiment.
Nice setup👍 I like having a quick way of accessing the AF configurations. I don’t use tracking now, but might start when they release the bird tracking update.
There's an easy way to have the functionality of the BB focus with the manual focus in Olympus: if you go in the A menu (AF/MF) you have the different functions for the AEL/AFL button for the different focusing modes. So if you put the mode 3 on the MF, you have the S-AF on the AEL/AFL button and the shutter locks the exposure when half pressed. Then, you can have the usual shutter button AF and, when in MF, you can do AF with the AEL button. I don't know if there is any difference with the normal BB focus modes.
Good tips. It was interesting to watch this video and see what you use. I mostly use the MF override feature - S-AF+MF or C-AF+MF. I find the MF on the focus clutch is too sensitive and I cannot do fine focus adjustments with that, so I switch to MF mode in camera. I also use the FN lever switch mode 2 configuration to quickly switch to MF. The Pre MF option I mostly use to find the focus distance to set on the AF limiter settings - I focus on some background like trees or bushes with Pre MF to find the distance, then I set a custom focus limiter range to less than that. It helps to prevent AF catching the background, then I use AF to quickly get on something and fine tune with MF override. It is a shame Olympus don’t have an info item with the focus distance to set up the custom AF limiter!
If only I'd known some of these when I did my comparison!! Love the fact that Olympus seems to let you basically assign any function to any button - Nikon seems to like to limit what features can be mapped to different buttons and it's pretty annoying!
Hello Sir.. i have the same lense i bought last day cuz i thought it will fit to my Olympus E-PL3.. and im thinking to buy a converter but dont know what is the type i will buy. Can you Help me for this??
Hi Espen, when did you get the M-1x ? Do you find it hugely better than the original mk ii you started with and in what way ?. I have the M-1 iii and when I tried to assign MF to the L-Fn button, as shown, I could not find MF in the list. Have I missed something or has the mk iii not got this ?.
Hi Vanessa, I got it only a week ago or so 😃 That's weird, I can change the L-Fn button to MF on both my em1ii and em1x, I'm pretty sure it should be there. Maybe try to assign a different button to MF just to see if MF shows up on the list then?
Hi Vanessa, I found i really like the handling of the "X", due to its size, especially with the 300 F4, on the M1.2, I had always used a grip to beef up the cam. I have average sized hands so no big deal, just love a big cam. www.rsdunphyphotography.com/mammals
Don't know if this could help: I have the function lever assigned to change the AF mode (I usually have the SAF+MF for position 1 and CAF for 2, but you can change it and it remains). In my E-M5 II I can assign MF to other buttons, but my E-M1 doesn't let me make this assignment if I don't change the lever configuration.
Hi Espen. I used some of your settings on my M1 Mark III and now my focus bracketing menu item is grayed out. Was there anything in the focus settings here that would have caused that? Thanks.
I don’t think so, its not that it’s in manual focus is it? That will grey out a lot of options. I’ve had a similar thing happen before, I troubleshoot it by changing one thing at a time to see what did it.
I’m a Canon man☹️🙁😕😟😰....but!!!!....after watching your video I now want to be an Olympus man lol😁 lol only kidding? I’m canon through and through? Oh I’ve a problem with my 28-300? Err code 1 keeps popping up, I clean the contacts but it doesn’t help and also it seems like the aperture is closed and no movement......Any ideas to help ?
Espen Helland pmsl.... I’ll pop it into wex and see how many hundreds of pounds they’re going to rob off me! I remember the good old days of the box with a pin hole in it....cheap as chips and our mobiles were 2 tin cans with a bit of string attached, never broke, flat battery or loss of signal and as for being smart they came with beans in them lol 😂
I have an OMD MK 3 and the menu shows none of the features in your tutorial. When I press the COG the setting goes to a, b, c1,c2, d1,d2 (reset lens). Where are the features that you have on your camera?

@@kallepyorala7605 Perfect 👍 Thanks for clarifying this, I've pinned the comment so other people can learn from it :)
Great Video, Espen. I haven't seen these settings on any other video. Thanks.
Your videos are excellent, thanks !!
Cheers, glad you enjoy 🙂
Excellent tips Espen. I set quite a few of them, that I was looking for.

That’s a great idea about having a custom limiter range! I’ll have to experiment with that 👌
Very useful, thanks

Definitely a handy feature, just takes forever to learn everything in the menu 😅
Thank you, Really useful. You have completely converted me to BB focus. Can the Clutch be assigned to magnify?
Good to hear it 👌 I’ll have to check about the clutch for magnify
Useful tips there, out of interest what is the camera strap that you are using ?
It’s an old Goby strap 👌

Hi Fritz, sorry I’ve not bought a converter before. Best to check on the Olympus website 🙂
You need an electronic 4/3 to m4/3 adapter. There’s a cheap brand fotodiox or the original one which is 100 bucks

What strap do you use and how you connect it to your camera?
I use a peak design strap and I connect both to the tripod collar
