Oasis RV Hydronic Heater Flush/Fill: How Hard Can it Be?

  • Today I return to the 2018 London Aire I brought across the country twice awhile back as the owners have been having a repeat problem with the oasis boiler. The circulating pumps for the transfer/antifreeze fluid have been failing repeatedly and tought maybe it was time for new fluid. While a possible DIY project, I offered to help and here is the process I went through.
Always follow the instructions from Oasis, but this was my process and I try to explain the system a little bit along the way.
    Thanks for watching!!

    What a coincidence.
I am looking at a used motor home. A Beaver (imagine that) it has a Hydro Hot system on it and I have been learning about the system.
And the very next day, James throws up a video on a Hydronic system.
It must be a sign. 😅

I own a Newmar MH with the Oasis system. I formerly owned an Entegra with the Aqua Hot system. I think both setups are overly complicated and somewhat fragile. My Aqua Hot was nothing but trouble for the 7 years I owned it. The Oasis is much simpler and robust. In my first 12 months owning the Entegra Aqua Hot my fluid turned into brown sludge….without me contaminating it by mixing green and red fluid. I flushed that system similar to what you did and changed to pink fluid. It was still the same color when I sold it. That Century boiler fluid sells for over $25/gal on a good price. It is a ripoff.

I’m so glad my early version Aqua Hot in my 2000 Monaco Dynasty uses regular antifreeze. And I use the antifreeze at full strength.

You mention that he should have still had hot water with the two 120V heating elements… those elements on the CH50 heat the transfer fluid just like the diesel burner does… if he had bad loop pumps, then the transfer fluid could get hot, but without the pumps, he wouldn’t have had furnace heating or hot water.
I carry 2 spare pumps in case of failure… losing a summer loop pump isn’t a huge deal, because you can turn on the furnace, or the bypass switch and get a hot shower… losing all 3 pumps? Ouch.
Great content! I got so excited to see you post something on the Oasis…

Being that you are very familiar with both the Oasis and Aqua-hot units / systems would be an interesting comparison video concerning the pros and cons of each. Thanks James.

Nice video. I guess I’m not the only one that had his shares of issues with an AquaHot system after looking at the comments. 🤣🤣
I have had one controller repaired and fixed it myself the second time. Bad ignition coil, wiring issues, a bad thermostat and a couple leaks and all that in less than two years. 🤯

We recently purchased a 2004 Foretravel U320 at an estate sale with the intention of fixing it up and re-selling it. Although it's in excellent condition overall, it had been sitting outside for almost 4 years when we bought it. And of all the things that are giving us trouble, the Aqua-Hot is the #1 offender. The fluid probably had never been changed, and the only way to describe what came out of it is "Definitely Not Pink." Then the controller was giving us problems, and they're about $500 refurbished, so instead of plunking that down I removed the electrolytic capacitors and replaced them with new ones. This got us one step closer to success as the timing cycles came back to life, but then the ignition coil tested bad. Sigh. These are $450. This isn't a game for the faint of heart, or pocketbook. Thanks for sharing this, it's worth its weight in gold to someone trying to do the same thing as a home gamer.

Listen to is start up, for a grinding noise. That'll be the shaft bearings on the blower assy. Those are crazy expensive too. I used a guy in Elkhart that does same day rebuild. Good things are expensive for sure on an Aquahot.

I have the same Oasis system and have also replaced three pumps, but never the fluid, which is now several years old. ITR technical support was excellent, including quickly diagnosing dead pumps and providing detailed replacement directions, but I wonder if the original pumps were not defective or poorly designed, and I was also less than happy paying over $150 for two pumps (they swapped out one for free when the new one quickly failed, for a total of three pumps replaced) particularly since they appear to be simple 12 Volt pumps that are most likely made in China.
Question: At 6:51 you flipped the left and right hose lines How did you do this--move the drill pump from the left line to the right--without introducing air into the system? It would seem that all fluid would drain from each disconnected line when you disconnect and reconnect the lines and that the air that now occupies each line would be pushed into the Oasis.
Lastly, to save some money I have pondered measuring each pump's flow and replacing them as they fail with cheaper 12V pumps that are less expensive and heat tolerant. I would expect 212 deg F is the hottest the water will be (true?). Have you done this, and if so what are the flow rates?

So James, Thanks for the video. I've known about this method but I've never performed or watched how it was done. It is Spot on as I had expected. I know your Super Busy; but who in Phoenix would you recommend to work on an ITR Hurricane.
My Beaver needs a full tune up Including nozzle, burner cleaning, exhaust de-carbon and fluid exchange. And to make matters even weirder, the P.O. has gutted the internal hurricane fuel piping and re created it outside the case. but it works flawlessly for 7 seasons! So any trustworthy people in Phoenix who actually -know- ITR products you could recommend? About ready to head on up to Denver for service...

Is there an elusive (to me anyway) pre-fab way to add engine supplied hydronic heat to existing RV water heaters and furnaces? I find it ridiculous that it hasn't been at least an option to any but the more/most expensive RVs after all of these years. I can spend hours or days shopping for parts and cobble (properly, but PITAfully) a system to use the RV's engine heat to keep the inside of the coach warm (without having to use propane, especially when the engine is capable of producing a heckuva lot more heat - for free) and have a hot shower waiting when I'm done driving but...

There is a model of water heater that can take coolant from engine in to heat the water. Otherwise, there is no such complete system to do this that you can buy. Because even there is, it will take a lot of effort to run all the lines which defeat the purpose to being a "complete system". That said, I am one of the few that did install a custom system on nu system and I will make a video about it.

It's interesting, my 83 Bluebird wanderlodge has 3 hydronic heaters and the water heater all tied into the engine coolant loop. The newer stuff went away from using the engine in favor of the stand alone hydronic heater or strictly LP. I have considered plumbing in a webasto or something similar to heat the loop when parked.

James, what about the air that was in the lines and in the small container in the unit. There should be a way to bleed the air out of the system from each radiator like a house hydronic system right? Oops I see what you did never mind.

James, I have a 1998 Beaver Patriot with a Hurricane system and I haven't been getting any weird LED's but I have noticed if I shut off the remote switch the pump keeps running for a long time. In fact not sure if it shuts off. There is only 1 pump and it buzzes and is hot. I am not sure if fans are running but I know that pump is buzzing. Again no fault codes and the blower and remote switch work fine when it is heating the water tank. Is this normal because I don't know who to call for diagnoses? I think IRT is out of business. Thanks for any info or pointing me in the right direction on this one.
