    I rented a Sigma 100-400 last year and it was decent. Then got away from Sony and didn't worry about it much. Now I am coming back to Sony and we have this great lens available! I will probably get the Sony eventually as well, but I cannot wait to get my A7RIII and Tamron lenses next week. 28-75 G2, 70-180 and 150-500 coming in hot! Thanks for the definitive reviews!

    My first time watching your review Dustin. Thoroughly enjoyed the detailed but yet succinct review. I recently purchased a Sony A7RIV and looking to expand my reach. This lens is definitely on my list now.
    Thank you so much!

    Been watching your videos for years now. Keep it up! You provide not only indepth reviews of many lenses, but provide detailed comparisons between similar lenses which is mega useful. I'm planning to buy this guy over the sigma 100-400 as the sharpness and little each reach is worth the cost upgrade.
    Have you every considered testing third party telephoto lenses on crop bodies (a6xxx) knowing that you can't use the song teleconveters to get even more reach?

      I'll do it every now and then, but I'm so busy that adding additional testing is often difficult.

    Just ordered one! I almost ordered the Sigma 100-400 but in the end the reviews sold me! Its the biggest lens ive ever owned. Ive shot over 100k images on a sigma 15-30 so this will be a game changer to say the least

    Great job reviewing this lens and the competition! I'm torn between the Tamron 150-500mm and the Sony 100-400mm GM. While the Sony has a shorter zoom range and is more expensive, it does have the option of a 2x teleconverter.

    Nice review!!! Would YOU go for the 50-400 or for the 150-500?

      @DustinAbbottTWI  Рік тому

      Good question. For me, personally, I'd go with the 50-400, but I already own the Sony 200-600, so the 50-400 serves more of a need.

      The Sony 200-600G is slightly more consistently good across the frame. There's little difference in the center of the frame between the two lenses.

    This review sounded so positive. I got the Tamron to try against my Sig 100-400 DN with my A6600. Well ... long story short I returned it the next day. The Tamron was just plain soft at any focal length. Maybe it was a bad copy and might try again when more copies are available?

      Hi Bryan, you must have gotten a bad copy or some other variable, as the lens is very sharp.

    Hello Dustin, great review as always! Would you suggest this lens for someone using an A6000 camera for bird and other wildlife photos? Ive looked at the Sigma 100-400mm and the Sony 70-350mm. The Tamron seems to deliver much more range for a reasonable amount more in cost.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 роки тому +1

      In many ways I would say that if you are using the a6000 and intend to continue to shoot APS-C, the best option for you is the Sony 70-350mm OS. It's designed for APS-C and will be much more compact (and is also a very high performing lens). The Tamron is a good option if you think you need that much reach.

    I've been looking forward to seeing your thoughts on this lens. I am still on the fence on getting this or the sony 200-600. The tamron is cheaper but at $1399... it isn't a huge savings. I dont mind the shutter slow down but do wish it could use a teleconverter. I guess it will come down to seeing if street price drops here in a few weeks. I was thinking at a thousand... it would be a no brainer purchase. At 1400... I am wondering if I will be kicking myself for not just spending the extra 600 and getting the sony.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 роки тому +2

      It's a tough decision. This video where I compare the strengths and weaknesses of both lenses might be worth watching for you: ua-cam.com/video/8z_bAeA1hCo/v-deo.html | I will say this: any kind of price drop on the Tamron is probably more than a year away, and I'm skeptical it will be any more than $100 or so. The 150-600mm G2 lenses only see sale drops of about $200 from their also $1399 price...and they've been on the market for nearly 5 years.

    Any chance to see RF mount ?

    • @Be-Es---___
      @Be-Es---___ 3 роки тому

      No, RF mount isn't 'open' to 3rd party lenses as the Sony mount is.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 роки тому +1

      The jury is still out on that. At the moment, there are no Tamron or Sigma lenses in a native RF mount. I can't believe that will be the case long term, but so far Canon has been limiting third party access.

    How does the Tamron compare to the G Master 100-400?

    • @ArrakisDunedt
      @ArrakisDunedt 3 роки тому

      It does not.. It's 150, 50mm longer, and 100 longer once again, 400 vs 500.
      It's a compromise between the 100-400 and the 200-600. If I can I will purchase one in the future.

    • @Hrubicundus
      @Hrubicundus 3 роки тому +1

      @@ArrakisDunedt I know the focal range is different but I want to know how they compare sizewise (they look roughly similar in size, suggesting they could be alternative options if you want to bring a telephoto but the the 200-600 is too big), sharpness, image quality, VR, bokeh, general handling and use etc

    • @ArrakisDunedt
      @ArrakisDunedt 3 роки тому +3

      @@Hrubicundus Sharpness the Tamron will not let you down, magnification also will not although I think the sony is superior, handling likewise the sony is possibly better and if you own an
      a9 /2 or a1 on the sony you can have full speed + Teleconverters, as Dustin refers, its a limitation of non-sony glass and rear mount of the Tamron / Sigma options. The Tamron seems better than the Sigma and slightly worse than the Sony native glass, still very worthy still for a 3rd party!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 роки тому

      Bruno has give you a good answer below. Optically the Tamron is great. Autofocus will be about 95% of the G Master. The limitations will be no teleconverters and burst speeds will be constrained to 15FPS on Sony's sports cameras.

    • @Hrubicundus
      @Hrubicundus 3 роки тому

      @@DustinAbbottTWI thanks Dustin and Bruno. Teleconverter and burst speeds are not important to me, so I guess it would come down to the slightly better performance of the Sony versus the extra reach of the Tamron. I suppose the other main difference is the larger aperture of the Sony. Do you know what the maximum aperture of the Tamron is at 400mm?

    Hey Dustin! Great review as always. I’m really torn between the options - sigma 100-400, Sony 100-400GM, and this Tamron.
    I want a taste of telephoto lenses but still want things as compact as possible. I think I’m between the Sony and the Sigma… the sigma is a bit smaller and lighter but I’m not sure if it really is enough to sway my decision to bring it with me or not

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 роки тому

      This is a really a different lens in kind from the other two. You would have to use a TC on the Sony to compare focal ranges, and the only problem there is that you end up with maximum aperture of F8 on the Sony/TC combination. It's also more than double the price for that combination.

  • @vads4683

    Sigma 100 400 should be also tested with A1 to compare with Tamron ;) Some have found Sigma to be with faster AF with same camera body.

    How would this lens perform on an A6600 ?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 роки тому

      I didn't specifically test it in that application, but the focus should work comparatively well. None of them are going to give quite the performance of the Alpha 1, but the focus system in the a6600 is very good...and the Tamron functions like a normal Sony lens
