I've been waiting for this exact video. I'm 43 and grew up in Bonney Lake (and still live here). In my mind I can still picture how it looked in the 80s but now it's great to have actually video!

Having more places to shop is nice in a way, but I don’t look forward to all of those stop lights when I go through there now. It’s nice to look back at the old days. If you look at a video of Port Townsend from 86, there would only be like 2 new things lol 😂.

Was the Bonney Lake PD viciously enforcing traffic laws on people heading to Crystal back then too?
My mom got a $500 ticket for turning over a double yellow lol.

I’m stunned silent, I was born in 2000 and I’ve lived in Bonney Lake all my life and cannot believe how much has changed! 29:30 gave me chills, I pass by that Dairy Queen and 76 station (which is now a Chevron AM PM) every single day

Same!!!! I was in awe watching the whole video! I lived in Bonneylake from 1991-2005, I live in Sumner now and drive up 410 frequently! It's insane how different it is! Only thing recognizable is the Dairy Queen!

This video is crazy. We’ve lived in BL for three years and even during the “not so busy” times it still takes us about 15 minutes just to get from our house from 214th south of the Safeway, through all the stop lights - just to get to the hill going down to Sumner.

Born in Pierce County in 1965.
Moved out of state as a teen.
Moved back to Bonney Lake in 2012 (Sky Island area).
Blown away by the change revealed here!
So eager to see how it looked back in the 80's.
    This is terrific.

I would have been visiting my grandparents at the time this was done. They had a farm one street over from 410 coming into Buckley. They are buried in the cemetery along with several other relatives. This video stirred many wonderful memories. Seeing trees instead of concrete was the best part. Thanks for sharing.

Was it the white house off 234th? My husband grew up off what is now 254th. My great grandparents owned and started the sweet shop

What a wonderful memory!! 🙂I moved to the Lake Tapps area in 1989 and BL area in 1998. I remember driving up 214th from Lake Tapps when Safeway was the only grocery store and Lumberman's (tropical fish place which closed earlier this year, 2023) the only hardware store. The growth over the years has been very sad to watch. Yes, it's progress, however, it's also much too crowded for the area and watching the population explosion as well as many of the trees disappear with little to no growth / widening of the roadways to match the population explosion has been heartbreaking to see and makes everything and everywhere too crowded. Thank you to whomever shared this video.

Ive lived as an adult in Tapps area/Bonney Lake since 87....I miss the way it was! Used to go to Bowens auto wrecking... and then they moved down 410 towards Buckley when they got bought out and now they got bought out again and HUGE center being built there....Bonney Lake is so different now!

  • @gaylegaston5110

I remember before any of that was built. The only buodings at the top of the hill were the BLT and a building that housed Lake Tapps Realty, a laundromat and a beauty salon. Hwy 410 was only two lanes all the way through. If you needed groceries you had to go to Safeway in Sumner or into Puyallup. This was in the 60's to mid 70's.

Saw some old pics of the old PacHwy back from 80-83 going all the way to Tacoma. Everything was just farmland. Miss these places. I have some old pics of Martin Luther king way when it was Empire Way. It was mostly open land also compared to now.

@highwayvideos3434 - did the archivist give you a list of all of the Sumner/Buckley 410 photos and videos? Was going to send in a request for the earliest I could get and start from there. Hoping to find footage when 410 going up Elhi Hill was switchbacks or something that shows the Mid Town and East Town developments in the early 90s.

The videos in this highway program started in 1982, the photos back in the early 70's. Unfortunately, last I've heard the photos are taking a considerably long time to process as there are likely several hundred thousand photos at a minimum. The SR-99 photos are the only still images I've been able to obtain from them. The WSDOT does have routes going back to 2003 that can be obtained through e-mail however.

Viz’s Dairy Diner. Frank Visnaw built it in 1960. Mike and Judy Nordean bought the existing drive-in in 1992 changed name to Wallys , also owns Wally's Chowder House in Des Moines
