Story time: I begged my mum for a guitar for my 18th birthday back in 1997 and she got me the only one she could afford. A no brand acoustic. Didn't even have anything on the headstock. But I bought a chord book and practiced over and over for a few years before I played in front of anyone. I then upgraded to a nice Epiphone acoustic, then an Ibanez acoustic. I played open mic nights for a while and really enjoyed it. Then one night in 2005 my father came to see me play. The next day he told me that I wasn't that good and wasn't going to go anywhere with it. I was absolutely crushed. If my own father couldn't enjoy it, then I must be really awful. I felt like I was embarrassing myself every time I picked up a guitar. So I gave it up. I sold my guitars and became a nightclub DJ, then worked in a bank, then retail, then for a major airline. I met my wife in this time and she had no idea I could play an instrument. After 15 years of working for corporations, feeling like a sellout, and hating myself for it, I realized that I missed playing guitar. Those jobs weren't for me, even though I was good at them. So, yeah, I had a mid life crisis. But I quit my job, went back to school, and now I am a qualified audio engineer. I bought my first electric guitar a few months ago and I am loving it. I remembered so much from 17 years ago, I was surprised. So you're right about appreciating more after taking a break. My wife didn't understand fully when I first quit my job to go into the music industry. But when she heard me play guitar for the first time, she got it straight away. She's now learning banjo. If you've bothered to read this far, my advice is do not give up for as long as I did and don't let anyone tell you what you should or shouldn't get out of it.
Absolutely love hearing stories like this. Too often people become complacent in working some mundane job.. do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life!
Awesome story Im actually a drummer but wanting to play guitar now. Been around guitar basically my whole life,, self taught drummer at age 10, now 46 and wanting to play guitar. I still have a electronic drum kit but drums are kinda set aside for now for guitar lol but anyway thanks for your story it was inspiring.
My dad bought my first electric guitar from a pawn shop last summer during quarantine and I practiced hard for a few months then gave it up because I wasn’t sounding like the bands I loved and the tone I wanted in my head and gave up playing for months until recently I picked it up again a couple months ago and vowed never to quit again it was rough I felt stuck again and I wanted to quit i was mentally exhausted that I couldn’t learn or play anything right but I didn’t and right now finally I can play live wire- Motley Crue, symbolic- death, and parts of for the love of god - Steve vai it feels amazing that I can finally play something and seeing significant progress glad I didn’t give it up again because I’m a huge metal nerd

I learned this the hard way: If you take a break for a couple weeks or a month or more, ease your way back into it. Don't immediately assume you can attack it at the same effort level. My three week break turned into a six week break because I injured my left hand jumping right back to my old schedule.
I agree playing more than one style helps alot and playing different guitar types massively changes the way you play different songs etc
Learn the whole song, not just the cool riffs.
This can't be said enough. If I had a dollar for every time somebody learned the main riff and claimed to know the whole song, I'd be so damn rich lol
Who does that anyway? I'm a jazz player, when we study jazz standards, we study the whole thing. Seems common sense.

I'm learning piano at the same time as guitar. He's right. It's not really harder to do two instruments because each makes the other easier.
Ukulele helps with guitar also as it teaches shapes that you can use starting at the fifth fret. Speeds up expanding from basic cowboy chords.
I started piano at the beginning of 2023 and got my electric guitar this month! I totally see what you mean. For example, I have a tuner for my guitar, but because I know the notes on the piano I can use that as well to tune my guitar since I know that the strings are E,A,D,G,B,E. Its fun to play notes on the piano, and find them on the guitar, and vice versa.

Thank you for sharing these tips, Dagan and PMT:) I used to play guitar when I was 15 but that only lasted a year or so. But I got an electric guitar (Fender Duo Sonic HS) for my 29th birthday last month and I am so stoked to give it another go with the wisdom that I have now. For the longest time I had a limited belief that I was "too old" to learn an instrument but I now understand that that couldn't be further from the truth. I also started playing the piano at the beginning of 2023 because I wanted to understand how the music it self worked, and not just play riffs from my favorite songs. I know I have a long journey ahead of me but I know the most important thing is that I at least start, and to enjoy the process. To anyone who is wanting to learn or in the process of learning, WE CAN DO THIS!!
Yeah definitely agree with playing out of your comfort zone. I tried classical stuff and it helped me heaps, plus some of those licks are killer!
Being away allows tour diffused brain to work on things while you are doing other things. It is covered in the book "a mind for numbers". Great book, doesnt just apply to math

I practice on both acoustic and electric to broaden my horizons.
These are great. The 2 that have helped me the most is playing genres I’m uncomfortable with and playing with other musicians. No matter how you feel about the genre, there is always something you can take away and apply it elsewhere in some form or fashion. I’m such a visual learner that just playing along and watching others in person makes me grow the fastest. Plus I’ve been blessed with generous and down to earth people who are more than happy to show me a thing or two.
Heyyyy thankyou for all your awesome content btw! My first 5-6 years of playing I had to have low strings for playing but now I find I prefer a little higher. Seems to help with catching the strings when you go to do bends
I've had a couple year hiatus from guitar and am getting back into it now. Having the time off and coming back has given me perspective on my old habits and learning style, and what I can do better. It has helped me to realize what I had been doing that was not conducive to long term growth as a musician. Going forward I plan to focus a lot more on training my ear to pitches, intervals, and scales.

Just want to add to the "recording yourself" tip. It's also VERY helpful to film yourself with a phone when you write a new riff or melody etc... You always think you're gonna remember it a few days or a week later, and sometimes you will. But i cant tell you how many awesome riffs I've lost/forgotten over the years cause i didnt record them. This only applies i guess if you're writing you're own music. But trust me this is a life saver. Now i have a libraby of riffs stored away so whenever i need one they're not lost in the abyss

Can't agree more about the gain thing, fast thrashy stuff (even if in the bedroom it sounds toss) will sound epic with less gain, realy brings out the rhythm in the playing. On the upside it also makes the guitar a hell of a lot more responsive and versatile.
Some top tips right there sir and as ever that guitar tone... to die for (would loce to hear you do a vid with a mk1 Orange Rockerverb though, tis a beasty of an amp).

Give some simplified versions of classical music a shot. It sounds amazing on guitar and its the original building blocks for all modern genres. Turns out Beethoven and Mozart were musical geniuses as well as many others.

Bends take extra practice because you need to be able to bend between notes on pitch, usually quickly too. And starting bent on pitch, and releasing, is even harder since you have to have the pitch dialed in by feel alone before the play the note.

I'll be honest, I've always improved more when I've been regularly playing with other people than when I've been practicing on my own. Even when I've had to do things that I find morally abhorrent (I had to learn some Oasis songs, and I *hate* Oasis; the Wildhearts are best of the Britrock bands and this is a hill I will die on).

I go to shit when I record myself. I hate it. When I'm just noodling on my own I like it. Get three other people behind me and we hit the groove together and I play like no other.
