Great review! I happen to have a really old 5Dii and was looking to sell it and invest in a used 1D body, maybe even a 1Dx if budget allows. 5D weren’t really made for wildlife hence the frustratingly slow and inaccurate AF.
5D3 has already a great AF, the "61pt AF" which is the most advanced Canon put to DSLR. But 5D3's sensor is dated, it's just a wee bit improved 5D2 sensor, and the lowly 6D has still a tiny edge over that, so if I were to buy a FF DSLR from Canon these days, I'd go for 5D4. It's 5D3 with the new era sensor that is really good for a Canon world. I already made big jump and went from 6D straight to R6/2 with the plan to use my EF lenses adapted and they work very well, including couple of my Sigmas. Not all Sigmas are reported to work well though. I only have use for only one native RF lens which is has no EF equivalent, and that's RF800/11, it's great for the price. I actually still have my 1D2N which I bought from the newspaper as a journo beater, but since that thing is built like tank, it performed flawlessly and gave me a awesomely focusing Canon body at the times when Canon thought that only 1D class should AF really accurately. It's my nostalgia body I would not sell, it's got the ring of fire and the parabolic submirror to operate the AF. It's a nice piece of retro tech. Also it's possible to refurbish its NiMH battery cells (since there are industrial AAs inside) so the camera would work "forever". I also miss its higly incompatible several-buttons-at-once controls, because ot took me some time to master it. 😀I'd say its shutter button is still s bit better than the one on R6/2. Maybe I am holding a nostalgia bias.
@@mmiYTB a used 5D4 would be out of my budget. 5D3s are great but they lack the FPS of 1D bodies, which is why I am leaning towards them. Mirrorless have truly changed the game. Small and light bodies with great autofocus, but a little disadvantage of battery life. I also have a R10 (got it new just 2 months ago) which is a great little mirrorless body, and I’ll be using a 100-400 version 2 on that which arrives soon!
@@thorsrensen3162 yeah those are some heavy tank like bodies. I lost the battery door on my 5Dii so I always use it with a battery grip so I guess I’m kinda used to it now 😆
Sadly, I never fell in love with my 1DIIn. I went from the original 1D to it and IQ was never the same. I still have my 1DIIn, and it is a very well built camera, but it's 8mp and high ISO performance are well, not particularly good today. A far better option is the 5DII.
@@joewhitnallphotography good luck. The 5DII has the best IQ imho, but the 5DIII has better video and AF. The 5DIV is better again, but still quite pricey for a quite old camera now. It is, imho, overpriced. I can get an original 1Dx cheaper than a 5DIV...

Glad you enjoyed it! If you're in the UK check out MPB
I have the 5dmk2 as well but I am worried the 1Dx series is too heavy for my arms to walk around with all day.

I'm planning to get some 5D's so will be interesting to test
