i have canon ef 300mm 2-8 and i wanted to buy the r5 canon it will be working on it?

Joe I was looking for the link to watch through your part 2 on how to make that vertical grip work with a shutterbutton can you please tie that in with your original part one cause I've been looking everywhere to watch that video you have you for doing what are you doing .

Don't have any plans to purchase an R1? Actually I like DSLRs too, but I also want to try new mirrorless lenses, unfortunately Canon will never release any new DSLR models or new models of modern lenses for them again.

I went from 7D to R7. I skipped the 7Dii. Still have my 1D3. After a year and a bit I will say I love the R7. It outperforms in every aspect. I will get a FF body at some point, maybe R6ii or R5 used. But in no hurry as most of what I like to do suits the crop sensor anyway. I think the 7Dii was a nice body though.

combine this cam wirh a 6d and its all you need. fast like hell af unit and a lowlight point focus iso wonder on fullframe. best two choices for budget if already got some canon lenses. other than that get nikon d750 for the all arounder, also budget af combined with classic nikkors

Love this camera. I’m a bird photographer and the combination of an R3 and an R7 has me covered for any situation. There’s an evf boot from AMZ that’s proven very durable.

I do love my R3, but 24mp is not enough for birding photography in general (unless you are very close to the bird or it's a large bird filling the frame). I eventually wanna get back into motorsport photography though, and the R3 will be perfect for that.

Hard to beat the sigma especially when mounted on a 7D MK ii. Incredible reach. I stay at 500mm which is a 800mm full frame equivalent.

Great video thanks for sharing, interestingly I've had a 1D Mark 2, Mark 2N, Mark 3, Mark IV, X, X Mark ii, 1DS Mark iii. Loved the 1D mark ii N for it's film like sensor, probably got the nicest images from the 1DS Mark iii but the buffer was terrible and low light capability wasn't good. 1DX great, 1DX Mark ii even better. One niggle I do have about Canon's is the 1DX seems to attract a lot of dust, really fine black specs in the viewfinder and I've noticed the 1DX Mark ii does as well. Not sure if it's because the focus screen is super fine compared to the coarser focus screens. Also the 1DX Mark ii seems to suffer a little from oil splatter from the shutter mechanism onto the sensor. I think next camera for me will be the R3. Prices seem sensible compared to the R1 and the R1 doesn't appear to offer much more than the R3. Also want to get my hands on the new 70-200 RF 2.8... in black... 🙂

Will Canon ef 500mm f/4L work on a Canon RF 7 camera ?

I still run my Mark II switch between that and my R6. I use my 5D Mark IV for portraits. I’m saving for an R3!

I handhold my mark 1 500f4 with R3 and 1.4x III TC...no issues. My personal notes on the combo is that it is slow to grab initial AF, but once it has acquired AF, it is pretty good at tracking the subject. The mark 2 primes are faster, especially on initial AF acquisition. RF lenses are even faster. I notice very little degradation in AF performance with and without TC. Even less so with optical performance.

I recently bought a second hand 7D mark ll that I came across whilst paying a random visit to the store where I buy a lot of my used photo equipment from as they are quite cheap as they are not a dedicated camera store but a general second hand electrical goods store Slash pawn shop mine came complete with a yongnuo 50mm 1.8 lens which in my opinion makes a good basic general lens but I also have a 18mm to 55mm kit lens on my older canon 1000D that is a more all round basic lens mostly I am into street photography as a hobby so can get away with using a narrower lens than usual but i might keep my eye open for a smaller prime lens one the used market at some point m

The problem with older lenses is that the iris blades weren't designed to open and close that fast (for AF). Without AF you'll get full speed because the iris just stays at the value you've set it at.

The 1ds was my dream camera when I went to IPS in 2002. Worked at a grocery store and tried to save. I’ve bought the 1ds3 now and I love it.

I have the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 and 2x tc which is heavier but comparable, though not as good. It isn't ok for hand holding and why I bought a monopod. It is too heavy to keep stable as it is equivalent of a 960mm on a 7d mk2.

I used to shoot these about 20 yrs ago and loved them but GAS made me sell n “ upgrade” . Now many years later all my “ pro work” are done with Sony . But for myself I still love the 5d classic and my sigma Merrill collection … and now just repurchased the 1d classic . Obviously the CCD madness got the better of me . And perhaps the GAS again as it’s getting harder n harder to find one . I have paid a pretty penny for it but it’s in a mint condition with 30k on the clock so it’s almost brand new . Love this thing and It will stay in my collection for sure. I think sometimes it’s a great exercise to limit oneself. As you said , it’s pretty much what you shoot is what you get . It helps to stay on point with composition etc . . It’s crazy what can be done with the Sonys nowadays . And that’s perfect for paid stuff because you have to deliver . But they are not much “ fun” really . Funnily the old 5d classic and this puts a smile on my face every time I pick them up . 👍

PS the mark 2 super telephoto lenses will be serviced until 2029, when they will then reach end of life support. mark 3 (600f4) will be supported longer of course. Canon didn't release a mark 3 500f4. And, we don't have a RF 500f4 (yet) and probably won't see it given the strong rumours about the 200-500f4 RF lens supposedly due out in 2025.

just as a FYI - astro-physics (US company that manufactuers telescopes and mounts) provides spare parts for ALL of their manufactured items and they have been in business for nearly 50 years...

Just a suggestion, you could add one of the RF /11 lenses and the RF100-400 to 1) give your initial impressions & unboxing, 2) short term review, 3) compare against your current kit 4) long term review 5) compare against each other that’s 9 or so videos (expense aside) My RF600/11 is so fun on my R7 due to its weight and focal length. IS works well and I recently got the EF100-400L II also a great lens. Your mention of fps speed reduction I myself didn’t see on the 400/5.6 L which worked great! Just lacked IS like its 300/4 L sibling. Ended up selling my mint copy. RF do have advantages being its hit rate with the IS & AF working at faster speeds and the RF100-400 even sporting a USM motor!

I just ordered a "vintage" 300mm f/2.8 a few days ago, for me, the money saved is well worth the risk, and I will be shooting DSLRs for the foreseeable future. I'm glad to have a way to purchase lenses that I would not be able to afford new! Hope you're feeling better soon, by the way 🙂

Recently bought a 500mm F4 is version 1 that was completely serviced by Canon including new is system, new aperture diaphragm, and focusing motor. Previous owner was a CPS member and wanted it like new. He never used it after all that expense. I gave $1500 usd. Looks and performs like new.

All 3 points are most definitely valid ! For some of us photographers, it is either the budget RF lenses with f/11 only etc or the old EF lenses. Both are valid choices but the older EF lens choices lets you get F/2.8 or f/4 which gives a wider flexibility along with greater sharpness. On a side note the Rf 600 or 800 f/11 lenses do allow great pictures when you have lots of sunshine 🙂

Using R5 and R7. For birds almost exckusively the R7 with a RF 200-800. I considered buying this one for more light. But since I would use it with the R7, I'm not sure anymore. The reach with my R5 wouldn't be enough for me.

Back in the day, THIS spec + speed + image quality from the 1Dmki would have had us chemical photography folks practically fainting when comparing to our 36 image rolls of TRI-X !!! But now? It’s ‘yesterday's news’ while R3 cameras fire off 195 FPS like they’re shooting an action scene for an action movie. Are people better photographers now? Nope! Just faster at taking a million shots of their lunch.

Hey Joe, I bought this last month, it’s in fantastic shape. I’ve been shooting it with my 35mm 1.4 and must say the images and colors are great. There is something to be said about these older still only bodies.

I have set my R7 autofocus reaction settings down one notch and find it works well with my EF 500 mk1. I don’t buy the battery argument. It is more likely to do with the sensor and AF detection abilities of that sensor. Or some decision Canon made… but as an engineer working on stuff like this for a living I can tell you the battery argument is BS. You are right though - the R7 works flawlessly with the EF 100-400 ii, but to me, it looks like it hunts somewhat on the EF 500 i, and by tuning down the reaction it seems to do so less… or I convinced myself that it does!

I see in the comments below that many remark that the lens is very sharp. Some internet attention seekers claim this lens goes softer with age? I can’t see why. Any comments from owners regarding this? I am interested in getting a used copy at some point

I find EF lenses work better with RF cameras than they did with EF cameras. The focus is just better. My 200mm f1.8 is much more accurate on my R3 than it was on my 1DX Mark II.

I am using it with R5 and it works absolutely wonders. It's so fast, it's so sharp and both with the 1.4 TC engaged. Amazing lens for wildlife, zoo, bird photography, perfect universal setup. It's essential however to setup and adjust the AF menu section properly for bird photography. Most of the birds I shot recently in Ecuador I used TC = f5.6 and with R5 after cropping, thanks to the 45 mpx sensor, the results are amazing.

Dude please make a video showcasing the Original 1D mark I's shutter Please do all shutter speeds but if you can't, only do 1/16000 because i have never found a video showcasing it!

While older super telephoto lenses still offer impressive image quality, they can be problematic. Many of these lenses are no longer officially supported by Canon, and even independent repair shops may struggle to find replacement parts. It's important to note that some single cheap component can render an entire lens unusable.

I'd go for the Sigma because IMO its sharp to 550mm and honestly the difference in sharpness is mostly when you pixel peep. Viewed as a whole, I think both will produce excellent results and even at 600mm, its still fully usable when stopped down just a bit. The extra reach can be usable and for me more important than sharpness at a pixel peep level.
