I like the idea of gentleman's agreements for otherwise banned aspects of the game. If both players want to throw down on PokeFloats, let em. And if both players agree to wobbling, that'd be a rare enough occurance to not drag out every Icee match. It's like a side challenge the players could make against each other.

I think the PMLG tech confirmed what was already known. Steve was already broken and arguably banworthy, and now a new tech that straight up gets rid of hitstun makes him even more obnoxious. Steve is too strong, and like you said tech like this is exponential. It will only take about a week for Steve players to master it and find new ways to exploit it.

How do you counterplay near infinite adaptability, especially since some characters can’t even hit blocks with their projectiles? Like the strat against the best Steve players is don’t get hit, hit them first, bait out minecart and punish, etc. now you can’t even guarantee profit off hitting him!
To be fair, those games were completely broken even ignoring Meta Knight and Bayonetta, and Smash 4 would have died after the release of Ultimate anyway.

We waited until this happened. That's good because the case for an emergency patch is very strong with how much has been uncovered. Brawl and Sm4sh died because they had overcentralized metas and were heavily imbalanced from day one. That's different.
During the last "Tweek Talks", Pink Fresh said something that I think summarizes pretty well the anti-ban sentiment. He said: "If Steve gets banned and you just suddenly hate Ultimate, then you don't like Ultimate". You just like watching Steve, but you don't like the game itself. Tweek then adds how he has switched mains almost three times, same with Leo. So if they can due to circumstances external to their own will, Steve mains CAN too.
I think this take is like, startlingly unempathetic. This isn't like if Wolf or some other fundies character just happened to break the game, like in Smash 4 - annoying as it can be, Steve has one of the most unique playstyles in the entire game, in contention with Snake and probably a couple others. People thought Steve was a high mid tier for the first year and a half of his release, but labbers kept pushing the character out of love for how he plays. Even discounting the fact that Steve's tech is some of the hardest to execute that's actually meta-relevant, literally no other character in Ultimate feels the same to play. You can't 'just switch off' without totally rewiring how you look at the game. I think, at this point, Steve's potential has been pushed far enough to warrant a ban. But it's absurd not to see how doing so to a character that works like him would totally demoralize his mains.
@@TranslationHell It's not surprising, smash vets want things in certain ways, it's part of why HBox was the villain of melee, he played a character that didn't have a popular style. Imagine if puff got banned then. My main concern isn't so much Steve himself (though the ensuing Steven main bullying isn't doing the community any favors), but rather what it may open the way for: More bans but with less justifible reasons. It's why game scenes are slow to ban characters; it tends to invite more requests.
I like the idea of being able to play him through a gentleman rule. Like imagine all the crazy shit Steve mains will be doing in another year or so. I’d hate to see all that progress and dedication go to waste and it should have the opportunity to be displayed, just maybe not in a serious tournament setting
If the dev team is willing to fix a thing like this? Absolutely should be displayed however this tech is less a tech and more an unfair exploit. It needs to be fixed and no one would gentleman the character in a tournament.

Let all of their effort into a broken character, which is noticeable about 2 hours after picking him up, be for nothing. It can all burn away in a series of tournament bans nationwide. They can be a circus side show for broken in game tech and uncurbed ability power. Playing Steve seriously and calling any win “real” is an actual joke when the cards are in your favor from the start.
Emergent properties that arise in a game can add an insane amount of depth, fun, and replayability throughout a game's life. Tech based on this sort of stuff can define a game (e.g.,like wavedashing in Melee, skiing in Tribes), and elevate the experience for both players and spectators, especially when the tech ends up being applicable to the entire cast. Unfortunately for Steve, the rest of the cast isn't capable of buffering (or being generous with a hard read) a block place, and then being able to cancel any hitstun and immediately punish your opponent. When character exclusive tech starts to provide an unfair advantage, and has the serious potential to create a frustrating environment for players and spectators, action needs to be taken. It'd probably be more apt to call Steve's recent developments character exclusive jank, and to ban characters/tech when appropriate to protect the integrity of the game.
I think what I’ve been enjoying most about the ban is the regions/players that are trying to encourage Steve players to come to tournaments by either giving them free entrance for 1 or 2 tournaments, or the top players from regions that said they would help their regions Steve mains to find a new main.
It's sad to see the funny blocky man go, but tech that gives an inherent edge to the best character in the game AND that is also hard to rule on because it's hard to detect? Yeah, unfortunately, it has to go.
At first I was one of those Team he ain't no Brawl Meta Knight or Smash 4 Bayo, and one of those Team Wobble people, but when someone brought up to me the visual aspect of it, that's where everything changed. I think it would be a hassle for a CO having to be able to take so much time to identify if the tech was used or not, and it would slow things down a lot at bigger venues. As more time went on I see why he was banned. Also bans for the community might be a healthy step, Bayonetta definitely should have been banned in Smash 4 and EVO 2018 literally was a nightmare for so many people to look back at, as a community healthy steps have been made, and we should continue to rise up, just because a character is used by a massive handful of people doesn't mean that character shouldn't be bannned.

I think treating it as “let’s see how a ban goes” is the best way to go about it. People hate fighting the character, and I think a ban would really be beneficial for the community as a whole due to how strong the hatred is. I mean, me personally: I’d like to prevent another Onin situation from happening on the social side of the competitive scene, and if it means banning Steve, so be it.

Banning steve is a healthy thing for ultimate. Specially if you tackle the problem so early. The new tech is just blatantly broken and unfair. It will turn ultimate sour if it is allowed in tournaments.

Sakurai didn't even know bayonetta had a triple jump until mkleo triple jumped a ridley during pre release and Sakurai had pointed out that it was a glitch. if Sakurai didn't even know bayo had a triple jump for 2 whole years during smash 4 until a pro player had to show him live during development of smash ultimate then chances are he doesn't even know steve is good. fun fact bayo can still triple jump but nobody talks about it or cares because she is not a good character anymore.

Surely they just need a couple devs from smash to come back and fix this up real quick.
I think framing Steve players as "carried" rather than focusing on what attribures Steve has that makes such a thing possible is what got us here in the first place. Making choosing a character a moral choice will always be poisonous to a competitive community. It breeds resentment, from the top players all the way down to the bottom skill rung, and on both sides of the issue. If it ever gets that bad you need to take discussions of banning that character very seriously, removing all emotion from the situation as much as you can.
Refusing morality in the name of the hive mind is what led to Magnus "Mangs" Hestveen getting to sexually assault a woman at a cross-country convention. You're not convincing me that it's not a choice between morality VS cheap acceptance of bad things.

I'm honestly just glad that "just ban the tech" wasn't an option here. The intro kinda hit me hard with both nostalgia and sad sympathy. All the new things and tech that were popping up about Steve felt so long ago. I also feel sorry for the genuine Steve enjoyers/mains. People have been meme-ing about Steve being in smash for a long time. Then when he was revealed everyone absolutely lost their minds. Out of all the characters revealed in fighters pass 2 Sephiroth and Steve were the most hype by a RIDICULOUS margin. He was so faithful to the spirit of minecraft too. Endless creativity and freedom. But that same creativity and freedom was his downfall. I strongly believe that Steve has to be banned worldwide, but it's definitely not out of hate. And it's not without remorse. Sorry, Steve. You truly were the embodiment of creativity, freedom, and ingenuity.

I think it’s fair to ban Steve for Coinbox. Better that than having to carefully speculate every second of every Steve game and even have to look back after every Steve game to see if the tech was used
Steve is kinda like pac man on steroids, you need a galaxy brain to make creative tech plays with him and unlike pac man he can get away with everything 99% of the time. Now with PMLG he has become nearly unbeatable, this ban was definitely needed.
My concern is what will happen with Japan, they seem to insist on not banning Steve and Acola said he won't learn the tech cause he's not good with input stuff like that I wonder if the meta's will end up split between regions
I mean that's fine, but Japan still will have to travel out for actual cash tournaments since Japan's scene doesn't reward any cash rewards and even so you have to be registered to a shady ass probably Yakuza run company that takes away large portions of their winnings. It's a reason why for FGC a lot of Japanese players travel to compete and don't want to deal with that in region BS.
If the tech is really as bad as it seems then Acola will likely lose his position as a top player. If he can hold his position without the tech, even against other Steves, then it would actually serve as an incredibly strong argument for keeping Steve. I say he should go for it.
@@cantbelieve5231 Difference between MK and Steve is that ~70% of players played MK already and was already too late into the game where local bans actually had less entrance since that meant most people couldn't enter with their fav character. Japan Steves prob won't travel, but they won't win big money either and will fall off ranking which in this case would just be Acola. Honestly this wouldn't be a big loss at all considering in Brawl there were numerous Japanese top MKs.
I'm not an avid ultimate watcher, I mostly stick to traditional fg's and lesser known plat fighters. This is fucking hilarious, but also really sad. Steve imo is fun to watch, I'm a huge fan of games just not working and seeing how defensive play can break online discourse. The ban is justifiable, but pretty knee jerk considering we're still yet to see this used practically
This scene has been shown time and again that it can't handle the discussion of character bans and even today we still say "ah, we should've banned bayo" So I'm glad that at a time when the economy is falling down again, when smash falls into the same pit it's been in many times, we're brave enough to change something this time
I didn’t hear about the hitstun issue. Shit I need to get back into the scene before I’m completely behind. Holy shit. That is the first time I’m decided “for” banning Steve. This is an exploit that would be EXTREMELY hard to enforce. Unlike wobbling, it could easily be done on accident and would create insane upsets and tournament issues. Unless Nintendo wants to hot patch this, he unfortunately should no longer be allowed in tournaments. I think it’s sad when some character is *literally* so broken in a fighting game that it makes sense to ban them. And so much hard work from many young smash players around the country is likely going to have a huge setback for them.
It's such a shame that this tech has lead to the ban of Steve but at least this means I can finally show everybody that Zombie is the supreme character anyway.

Why is Arkansas just casually gonna ban Kazuya too lmao, sure he can steamroll you if he gets going, but, like, ONLY if he gets going. He has the worst disadvantage state in the game by a country mile, and unless you really know what you're doing you generally get obliterated when you try to play Kazuya
People don't want to put in effort to learn his counter play, far easier to cry until he's banned. In short people are so stuck with characters, the rare Kazuya main flips things upside down to them.
I feel like Steve should have been the 1st DLC character to be released since it was the most complex and therefore would need more review than the others, so it would have made more sense to release it first so it would have had more time in the spotlight for balance patches and fixes
Steve isn't complex, mainly broken because of numbers and too little commitment on his kill moves that double as burst and mobility options (minecart and anvil)
While I feel bad for the Steve mains, these kinds of things are helpful in the big picture. Steve being gone will help bring back the casual fan base, and will only make the scene healthier. Things like this need to be done for the greater good.

Tbh I don't think many people actually left because of steve. More people complained like they usually do sure, but there is no widespread provable evidence. And no "in my experience" does not count for stats. NA'S fanbases hatred for steve is a huge reason for his ban even before the tech. I am not saying don't ban steve, but it is important to analyze how strong internal bias has impacted the communities players and fanbase.
Steve annoys me but I never personally thought Steve needed to be banned... until this tech, which is something I do not think Steve is suppose to be able to do and the fact he can and its repeatable is problematic. Looking at Melee, there is a glitch that cancels your knockback sometimes which has changed games completely in an unfair way, and I feel like that will happen here except, unlike in Melee, now you can control it. As you said Hungrybox, this is the straw that breaks the camels back for Steve. I know Nintendo would not do this most likely but if Nintendo fixed this PLMG thing with Steve in an update, then id be fine letting him back personally, but for the time that he can do this tech.. I feel a ban is worthy now.
if you mean invisible ceiling in melee that's not at all how it works, it halts *vertical* momentum for a moment, but only following specific circumstances, and can even be intentionally used to kill an opponent with a move that'd otherwise give them some height when you knock them off the side of the stage however, it almost never happens because the circumstances to trigger it are rare, and it most often happens with luigi, who almost nobody plays
Imo I think a fun way to balance him would be to make the base knock back on up tilt, up air, downthrow, and jab significantly higher, to nerf his insane combo game, and make anvil and minecart have less knock back scaling, to make them worse kill options. I also think his air physics are too good, so I would make it so he has 3/4 of his current air speed/acceleration. I think that would make him a normal top tier, a setup character like Pac-Man or snake instead of a character that can do everything every other character does better, basically. That’s how I would nerf him😊 Oh and remove pmlg also duh

Doesn't matter, it can be learned in 5-10 minutes and perfected as easily. Knip it in the bud until he is fixed. You can unban a character when they get fixed. You can't fix a game if the character kills it.
@@ethaneggleton4724 my idea is to have one big tournament that allows PMLG, then make an official call for the next big tournament. That way we’ll have that data to know if a ban is necessary or not. As of right now we don’t know how consistent PMLG is in a high tense tournament setting. Sure we run the risk of completely skewing the results of that major, but the next 10 majors won’t have those skewed results and the fans will be happy.

I think the PMLG tech confirmed what was already known. Steve was already broken and arguably banworthy, and now a new tech that straight up gets rid of hitstun makes him even more obnoxious. Steve is too strong, and like you said tech like this is exponential. It will only take about a week for Steve players to master it and find new ways to exploit it.
There was an alternative to it called MLG and then they discovered the Phantom version which is WAY worse.

We waited until this happened. That's good because the case for an emergency patch is very strong with how much has been uncovered. Brawl and Sm4sh died because they had overcentralized metas and were heavily imbalanced from day one. That's different.

During the last "Tweek Talks", Pink Fresh said something that I think summarizes pretty well the anti-ban sentiment. He said:
"If Steve gets banned and you just suddenly hate Ultimate, then you don't like Ultimate". You just like watching Steve, but you don't like the game itself.
Tweek then adds how he has switched mains almost three times, same with Leo. So if they can due to circumstances external to their own will, Steve mains CAN too.
Besides, with the absurd amount of characters, there are bound to be at least 5 characters you like to play in the game.

I think this take is like, startlingly unempathetic. This isn't like if Wolf or some other fundies character just happened to break the game, like in Smash 4 - annoying as it can be, Steve has one of the most unique playstyles in the entire game, in contention with Snake and probably a couple others. People thought Steve was a high mid tier for the first year and a half of his release, but labbers kept pushing the character out of love for how he plays. Even discounting the fact that Steve's tech is some of the hardest to execute that's actually meta-relevant, literally no other character in Ultimate feels the same to play. You can't 'just switch off' without totally rewiring how you look at the game.
I think, at this point, Steve's potential has been pushed far enough to warrant a ban. But it's absurd not to see how doing so to a character that works like him would totally demoralize his mains.

My main concern isn't so much Steve himself (though the ensuing Steven main bullying isn't doing the community any favors), but rather what it may open the way for: More bans but with less justifible reasons. It's why game scenes are slow to ban characters; it tends to invite more requests.

Let all of their effort into a broken character, which is noticeable about 2 hours after picking him up, be for nothing. It can all burn away in a series of tournament bans nationwide. They can be a circus side show for broken in game tech and uncurbed ability power. Playing Steve seriously and calling any win “real” is an actual joke when the cards are in your favor from the start.
Emergent properties that arise in a game can add an insane amount of depth, fun, and replayability throughout a game's life. Tech based on this sort of stuff can define a game (e.g.,like wavedashing in Melee, skiing in Tribes), and elevate the experience for both players and spectators, especially when the tech ends up being applicable to the entire cast. Unfortunately for Steve, the rest of the cast isn't capable of buffering (or being generous with a hard read) a block place, and then being able to cancel any hitstun and immediately punish your opponent.
When character exclusive tech starts to provide an unfair advantage, and has the serious potential to create a frustrating environment for players and spectators, action needs to be taken. It'd probably be more apt to call Steve's recent developments character exclusive jank, and to ban characters/tech when appropriate to protect the integrity of the game.
I think what I’ve been enjoying most about the ban is the regions/players that are trying to encourage Steve players to come to tournaments by either giving them free entrance for 1 or 2 tournaments, or the top players from regions that said they would help their regions Steve mains to find a new main.

At first I was one of those Team he ain't no Brawl Meta Knight or Smash 4 Bayo, and one of those Team Wobble people, but when someone brought up to me the visual aspect of it, that's where everything changed. I think it would be a hassle for a CO having to be able to take so much time to identify if the tech was used or not, and it would slow things down a lot at bigger venues. As more time went on I see why he was banned. Also bans for the community might be a healthy step, Bayonetta definitely should have been banned in Smash 4 and EVO 2018 literally was a nightmare for so many people to look back at, as a community healthy steps have been made, and we should continue to rise up, just because a character is used by a massive handful of people doesn't mean that character shouldn't be bannned.

I think treating it as “let’s see how a ban goes” is the best way to go about it. People hate fighting the character, and I think a ban would really be beneficial for the community as a whole due to how strong the hatred is. I mean, me personally: I’d like to prevent another Onin situation from happening on the social side of the competitive scene, and if it means banning Steve, so be it.

I think framing Steve players as "carried" rather than focusing on what attribures Steve has that makes such a thing possible is what got us here in the first place.
Making choosing a character a moral choice will always be poisonous to a competitive community. It breeds resentment, from the top players all the way down to the bottom skill rung, and on both sides of the issue. If it ever gets that bad you need to take discussions of banning that character very seriously, removing all emotion from the situation as much as you can.
Refusing morality in the name of the hive mind is what led to Magnus "Mangs" Hestveen getting to sexually assault a woman at a cross-country convention. You're not convincing me that it's not a choice between morality VS cheap acceptance of bad things.

I'm honestly just glad that "just ban the tech" wasn't an option here. The intro kinda hit me hard with both nostalgia and sad sympathy. All the new things and tech that were popping up about Steve felt so long ago. I also feel sorry for the genuine Steve enjoyers/mains. People have been meme-ing about Steve being in smash for a long time. Then when he was revealed everyone absolutely lost their minds. Out of all the characters revealed in fighters pass 2 Sephiroth and Steve were the most hype by a RIDICULOUS margin. He was so faithful to the spirit of minecraft too. Endless creativity and freedom. But that same creativity and freedom was his downfall. I strongly believe that Steve has to be banned worldwide, but it's definitely not out of hate. And it's not without remorse. Sorry, Steve. You truly were the embodiment of creativity, freedom, and ingenuity.

Steve is kinda like pac man on steroids, you need a galaxy brain to make creative tech plays with him and unlike pac man he can get away with everything 99% of the time. Now with PMLG he has become nearly unbeatable, this ban was definitely needed.

I mean that's fine, but Japan still will have to travel out for actual cash tournaments since Japan's scene doesn't reward any cash rewards and even so you have to be registered to a shady ass probably Yakuza run company that takes away large portions of their winnings. It's a reason why for FGC a lot of Japanese players travel to compete and don't want to deal with that in region BS.

If the tech is really as bad as it seems then Acola will likely lose his position as a top player. If he can hold his position without the tech, even against other Steves, then it would actually serve as an incredibly strong argument for keeping Steve. I say he should go for it.
@@cantbelieve5231 Difference between MK and Steve is that ~70% of players played MK already and was already too late into the game where local bans actually had less entrance since that meant most people couldn't enter with their fav character. Japan Steves prob won't travel, but they won't win big money either and will fall off ranking which in this case would just be Acola. Honestly this wouldn't be a big loss at all considering in Brawl there were numerous Japanese top MKs.
I'm not an avid ultimate watcher, I mostly stick to traditional fg's and lesser known plat fighters.

I didn’t hear about the hitstun issue. Shit I need to get back into the scene before I’m completely behind. Holy shit. That is the first time I’m decided “for” banning Steve. This is an exploit that would be EXTREMELY hard to enforce. Unlike wobbling, it could easily be done on accident and would create insane upsets and tournament issues. Unless Nintendo wants to hot patch this, he unfortunately should no longer be allowed in tournaments. I think it’s sad when some character is *literally* so broken in a fighting game that it makes sense to ban them. And so much hard work from many young smash players around the country is likely going to have a huge setback for them.
It's such a shame that this tech has lead to the ban of Steve but at least this means I can finally show everybody that Zombie is the supreme character anyway.
I wonder how this is gonna impact the decisions made on the tier list. With this many bannings, will we see the character re tiered into his own category as to not interfere with the placement of other characters?

He has the worst disadvantage state in the game by a country mile, and unless you really know what you're doing you generally get obliterated when you try to play Kazuya
People don't want to put in effort to learn his counter play, far easier to cry until he's banned. In short people are so stuck with characters, the rare Kazuya main flips things upside down to them.

I feel like Steve should have been the 1st DLC character to be released since it was the most complex and therefore would need more review than the others, so it would have made more sense to release it first so it would have had more time in the spotlight for balance patches and fixes
It also was the hardest one to develop. It required about 5 months of development which would be something impossible to get back at 2019.
Steve isn't complex, mainly broken because of numbers and too little commitment on his kill moves that double as burst and mobility options (minecart and anvil)

Tbh I don't think many people actually left because of steve. More people complained like they usually do sure, but there is no widespread provable evidence. And no "in my experience" does not count for stats. NA'S fanbases hatred for steve is a huge reason for his ban even before the tech. I am not saying don't ban steve, but it is important to analyze how strong internal bias has impacted the communities players and fanbase.

Steve annoys me but I never personally thought Steve needed to be banned... until this tech, which is something I do not think Steve is suppose to be able to do and the fact he can and its repeatable is problematic. Looking at Melee, there is a glitch that cancels your knockback sometimes which has changed games completely in an unfair way, and I feel like that will happen here except, unlike in Melee, now you can control it. As you said Hungrybox, this is the straw that breaks the camels back for Steve. I know Nintendo would not do this most likely but if Nintendo fixed this PLMG thing with Steve in an update, then id be fine letting him back personally, but for the time that he can do this tech.. I feel a ban is worthy now.

if you mean invisible ceiling in melee that's not at all how it works, it halts *vertical* momentum for a moment, but only following specific circumstances, and can even be intentionally used to kill an opponent with a move that'd otherwise give them some height when you knock them off the side of the stage
however, it almost never happens because the circumstances to trigger it are rare, and it most often happens with luigi, who almost nobody plays
if Steve was just less broken he'd be one of the coolest characters in smash history
He’s just too over-centralizing on swordies/characters with disjoints, a category of fighters that was strong to begin with.
Imo I think a fun way to balance him would be to make the base knock back on up tilt, up air, downthrow, and jab significantly higher, to nerf his insane combo game, and make anvil and minecart have less knock back scaling, to make them worse kill options. I also think his air physics are too good, so I would make it so he has 3/4 of his current air speed/acceleration. I think that would make him a normal top tier, a setup character like Pac-Man or snake instead of a character that can do everything every other character does better, basically. That’s how I would nerf him😊

Pretty sure banned in coin box just means banned? Why would you attempt to play a banned character hoping to get a player who also plays him.. so you can only play him against them? It's a sad line of thinking that has to be done.

Doesn't matter, it can be learned in 5-10 minutes and perfected as easily. Knip it in the bud until he is fixed. You can unban a character when they get fixed. You can't fix a game if the character kills it.

@@ethaneggleton4724 my idea is to have one big tournament that allows PMLG, then make an official call for the next big tournament. That way we’ll have that data to know if a ban is necessary or not. As of right now we don’t know how consistent PMLG is in a high tense tournament setting. Sure we run the risk of completely skewing the results of that major, but the next 10 majors won’t have those skewed results and the fans will be happy.
