Saw Rory in the 70's in Aberdeen, Scotland. Unforgetable, just pure class. No fancy light etc, Rory in his tartan shirt and jeans. Played for 2 plus hours. Sheer talent and virtuosity. Incredible performance . One of the best concerts I have ever been to,
Was that the one in 1977 when he had to cancel the original show because he couldn't get there due to snow (in Ireland, no flights), took out an ad in the local paper to apologise and said to keep tickets and they'd be honoured at another show (they were) - which the band made a 600 mile round trip to fit in between 2 tour dates in England a couple of weeks later?

Look up Brian May from Queen he ask Rory how do you get that sound and Rory replied a treble booster pedal and box Ac 30, May used that combination all his career, he said I got my sound from Rory
I'm a HUGE FAN and I truly believe Rory had a unique talent to make that Strat sing in any way he wanted. More than anything else his tone was in his hands and fingers.
I'm 67 and saw Rory in Waterloo Iowa in 76'. Against the Grain tour. It was the best show ever and I've seen the stones three times. I have been a huge fan and lately been digging back in to my collection. Big Guns on UA-cam is great guitar. Great acoustic on Irish tours album "As the Crow Flys is the best I love it. I'm a huge Joe Bonnamassa fan .two favorites..try Slow Gin great...
Rory was famous for not using any peddles or other effects other than a treble booster. It was all about the amp and probably all the sweat that poured into those pickups on that 61 Strat
👍 Time keeps on ticking... Going through a box of old ticket stubs not long ago, My first rock concert May 19, 1973 (Dusty Hill's 24th birthday, I came to find out on his passing) East Tennessee State University Rory Gallagher ZZ Top $4 It was about six months before Tres Hombres came out. Rory Gallagher was pure fire right out of the gate, and I think he had as much fun as anyone. Then, BG and the boys came out. Back when they were the most badass blues rock band that ever was. Straw hats, jeans, no beards (but Frank. lol), and BG in a white tshirt w/ pack of Marlboros rolled up in the sleeve(lol). Needless to say, Rory and BG made a big impression on a 16 yr old. Blues rock, slide guitar nut ever since. RIP Dusty, Rory, Lou, Rod. Thank You!
Thank you so much! Rory didn't use too many pedals, but his equipment did include: Rory played his electric guitars most often through a vintage Vox AC30 combo amp. Starting from around the late 70s, he began pairing the AC30 with amps such as Marshall 2104 JMP 50-watt Combo, Marshall Bass Head, or a Fender Twin. But, he most liked the combination of his trusty AC30 and a vintage Fender Bassman 4×10. Regarding pedals, he used Dallas Rangebooster during the 70s. He then switched to a Treble Hawk Booster. His other main effect was either an EHX Memory Man or a DOD 680 Analog Delay. He had a lot of different pedals, but he always came back to the same ones, using the others for specific pieces.
To add to this, pickups on his beloved Strat were stock Fender (originals were replaced around '75 with virtually the same) and an early DiMarzio FS1 in the bridge. Whammy bar was broken years before and never replaced. The bottom pot was rewired for one master tone, middle pot disconnected, and volume left alone.
Back in those days I would say the 'Phase shifter" compresses and stretches the sound but stays clean. Saw Rory at the Whiskey a Go Go in the early 70s near riot, great show! There was supposed to be 2 shows early & late but the early people wouldn't leave, the late people (me) pushed in, fire marshal said shut down, we wouldn't leave, Rory came back out and played all night.
The Rory Gallagher Irish tour 74 film is a good watch as it's documentary/concert footage. The dvd version also has a commentary from his brother/tour manager and his bassist. Quite a bit of personal insight and technical stuff in it from Rory and others. Not really something to react to but in may be of interest none the less. Can't find it in full on UA-cam but it might be about somewhere else.
Love this guy's guitar tone, in my opinion Gary Moore was another unbelievable guitarist, Parisienne Walkways or Out in the Fields are my faves of his, well worth checking out

You were asking how Rory got that tone, but it has nothing to do with his pedals - - - Rory's signature tone comes from just 3 things: his used '61 Strat, paired with a Rangemaster treble booster and a Vox 30 amp - - and that's it! He played that same used '61 Strat since buying it at age 15 in 1963 at a second-hand music shop for 100 pounds after buying it on credit!
I would say the range master has a lot to do with his tone, as well as lots of picking variations, which do give it an almost phaser vibe and lots of sounds. Either through a ac30 or fender tweeds
That Dallas Rangemaster he used is very rare and expensive these days, but you can still buy clones. Rory used no pedals - that treble booster sat on top of his amp.
I saw Rory probably over a half-dozen times between '73-76 and he never had anything on the floor. In a Guitar Player magazine article from that time he said he mostly played rhythm with the volume cranked for crunch and backed off slightly for more clarity and sting on his leads! It surprised me a little at the time but rang true to what I'd heard him do live. What he's using here I haven't the vaguest, I'd thought channel switching but that could just be my shitty earphones. 🤔 😅 😳 🤣

Ok.. Check out Jan Akkerman a Dutch guitar player .. with the band Focus.. and the track Hocus Pocus.. ( live in USA tour 1973) .. recorded live on NBC. Midnight Special... if you want an education in ultra guitar playing... Jan Akkerman was voted in Europe as the number one guitar player in 1970 onwards. Clapton refused to share a stage with him in case he lost his guitar god status.. Another interesting piece about the NBC performance...the original track was over six minutes... NBC said they had to cut it to 4:30 secs... they disagreed to cut so they just played it faster after calculating BPM to get it down under 4:30.. This performance by Focus is truly an eduction in music and Jan Ackerman’s guitar work is must see for guitar players.. be warned .. hold on to your seat..
Legendary answer by Jimmi Hendrix in as he was interviewed by Johnny Carson on tv (or Dick Cavett not sure here). Host asked how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world and Jimmi replie: "I don't know, you should ask Rory Gallagher". Not much more to be said here. 🎸🎸
Jimi Hendrix never said that, I seen the interview, easy enough to find it here. He answered " the best guitarist sitting in this chair" but I personally think he was a better guitarist than Jimi Hendrix
There is a bar in my hometown of Toronto called the El Mocambo, maybe you've heard of it. It's where the Stones played when Keith was busted for heroin possession. I was fortunate enough to see Rory there twice, 1978 and 1979. It was a guitar slingers heaven at the El Mo. I saw George Thorogood there and also Stevie Ray Vaughn in 1982. They recorded the SRV show!!
Rory used the Dallas Range Master Treble Booster, which he paired with his Vox AC30. He then later switched to use a Treble Hawk booster, which he paired with his Fender amps. simple setup. he used his volume and tone controls on his 61 Strat a lot while he played.
Brian May of Queen has said in many videos how he got his sound from Rory Gallagher when he (Brian) "was just a lad" and Rory was a star. Funny because Brian is actually a year older than Rory. So you and Brian and a whole bunch of others really love Rory's sound.
Haha - you're right - never occurred to me that May was actually older than Gallagher...that's funny. "We were just kids and we'd say Mr. Gallagher, how do you get your sound?"
He set the guitar switch out of faze and used chorus. You don't need much distortion if you play that loud. It will come naturally when you push the amp tubes.
I think a lot of people my age don't realize that Rory's period to them is like Big Band stuff to us. I saw him in 74. It was a long time ago. I was 20. I'm 69 now. His pedal board was basically a dimed (totally) AC30 and a treble booster to get rid of the flubby bass you get from a dimed AC30.
It’s Rock Palast (not blast). Palast means palace. Rory used to use pedals minimally on stage earlier in his career - in fact he known for getting his tones out of his playing and guitar. He did however use a Rangemaster (?) but on top his Vox30 amp. In studio recording he did however use a variety of effects pedals.
Saw Rory 17 times through the 70s & 80s. Fantastic. Never the same twice. The only effect he used was a Vox AC30 and a Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dallas_Rangemaster_Treble_Booster
I lived through that time, but didn't know about him. I discovered him from UA-cam. He seems like he was a wonderful person and artist. I was traveling and living in Hawaii at the time. So we got Dire Straits, Talking Heads etc. Rory wasn't big enough in the international scene to make it out in my sphere, I guess.
My first exposure to Rory was Top Priority. 1981ish Some USAF friends while stationed in Italy are responsible! Billy from Philly, Face from Racine, WI., and a few others.
Correct re Rangemaster and Brian May. In fact he was hanging around the stage door and said, Come in. And that’s how May learnt his first licks. Which he still incorporates in his Queen performances and recording.
First time I saw Rory was with the band Taste back in 1969. I saw them again twice after that, and then twice with his own band. The first and second times were in a church hall in my home town. Phenomenal.
A guitarist when asked, whatsit like being the world's greatest guitarist, reply I don't know man, go ask Rory Gallagher! A certain James Marshall Hendrix!
I have the Taste album , I also have several other Rory albums. Hes my 3rd favorite guitarist behind 1) Duane Allman 2) Johnny Winter 3) Rory Gallagher 4) Eric Clapton 5) Eric Johnson.
I was there when Rockpalast recorded the gig on the natural stadium of Loreley, great band, great Rory. Seen him many times and if he was still be with us I would still go there. Watch Nine Below Zero and Band of Friends, both initiated by his bassist Gary McAvoy.
Early in his career Rory just used a Dallas Rangemaster and Vox ac 30s. Wikipedia says he used a boss me 30 later. I don't what pedals he's stepping on here. If you watch the beat club sessions there is no pedalboard at all.
Rory was the best live act I ever saw. Small club in then West Germany, 1972. Me and my mates had no idea what we were in for. Videos don't really capture the electricity.
I could be wrong, but someone asked Jimi if he was the best guitarist in the world? Jimi said, 'not if Rory Gallagher is alive', definitely paraphrasing ❤
Are you wearing the shirt for Rory ? First time I saw him he was wearing a Levi jacket for the first song or two , took that off to reveal his trade mark check shirt . Rolled up his sleeves for a couple of songs only to be down to a tee shirt by the end . 70 ‘s was his prime . 74 to be exact . The Tattoo album is a top ten album of all time .
Stumbled on this video late. Always loved Rory, and still think he was one of the best but under recognized players ever, right up there with Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton. What I never realized until this video is how much Peter Frampton's sound and playing was influenced by Rory! So weird, in the outro I kept hearing "do you, feel like I do" in my head. Lol!
I’ve lived with Rory as the the soundtrack of my life. I’m 68… I was 15 when he at 17 recorded the Taste album….. I was hooked.
I was hanging in the barracks with some friends when someone threw on Top Priority. This was 1980 or so… been hooked ever since!
My Oldman seen him in Limerick.
I'm 71 and saw Rory 13 times. ( 6 with Taste and 7 with RG Band )

Brian May always attributes his sound to Rory Gallagher. He asked Rory how he got his sound...AC-30 and a Rangemaster treble booster. Simple as that.
I heard that as a teenage fan Brian spoke to Rory after a show and to his surprise Rory spent an hour talking guitars with him.

Because of Rory I added a caitlin bread treble boost to my board, its the truest to the Dallas Arbiter.
Boss phaser, sometimes flange, sd1 in the front of his ac30
Ac30 and rangemaster treble booster I think.
Lol!
Rory always used a Dallas Arbiter treble boost , lol as if his strat didnt have enough high end.
Chorus, flanger, phaser, compressor...
Quite the combo.
Gerry did his part.
I think he was using 1 pedal. Chorus maybe. Most of the time he didn't use any.
liked your Rory shirt, or did he copy country and western fashion?
🤣😂 flannel is in!
Ah contrare Page and Richards also killed it on a telecaster. Richards still uses a tele .
