- John Gillespie Magee, Jr. was an aviator and poet, made famous for his poem High Flight. Magee served in the Royal Canadian Air Force, which he joined before the United States entered the war
As a grounded pilot this always brings tears to my eyes... My last flight was in a Tiger Moth, I was chasing a sunbeam through the clouds, flirting with stall I just wanted to touch it, I knew it would be my last flight, just wanted to get those last few feet... The clouds forming cathedral like around me, blue above and green earth below, that was my sanctuary, my place of worship... I did touch that sunbeam... And it was like touching the face of God... And I forever walk the face of His creation longing to return.
A sublime reading of my Uncle John Gillespie Magee, Jr.’s WWII aviation poem “High Flight.” He had penned the poem on the back of an envelope and sent it home to my grandmother, Faith Backhouse Magee in Sept., 1941. A few months later he and another RCAF pilot were killed in a tragic training accident when their Spitfire MKs collided in the skies above Leasingham, England.
I like this too much. You should be a pilot. It's fun.
Thanks,@@romanov7000! A childhood friend from NYC took me flying on a crystal clear night in November some years ago. We flew from Peterborough, N.J. south down the Hudson and the city was all aglow to our left. The Empire State Building, Chrysler Building & other famous city skyscrapers seemed like chess pieces one could reach out & just pluck ~ until one got up close, that was! I was absolutely AGOG! He let me take the helm down the Hudson. I felt zero fear (from the get go ~ my sister was zombified with terror every moment). It was as though I were simply floating on a cloud. Perfect Peace. The denouement came as my buddy circled the Statue of Liberty, its iridescent copper green bathed in stunning, golden, pink light ... and then dove in close and buzzed the Lady in the Harbor in REALLY tight ... 3X 'round. Unforgettable !!!!! Happy flying, Romey! Stay safe up there !!! Peace.
That's amazing. You should be very proud of your grandfather. Not a lot of us have a grandfather who's a fighter pilot. Maybe my grandchildren will be 😁😁
@@romanov7000 it is fun many decades ago I read Jonathan Livingston Siegel and that book put me on my path to aviation
Beautiful that you still connect with his words. I watch this today, on the hours before the launch of the Dragon Crew capsule, inspiring moments, mirrored with the words of your uncle.
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air…
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew -
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
Absolutely beautiful poem. I heard this for the first time recited in a film with Mel Gibson, 'A Man without a Face'. Great movie.
I lost my grandfather today. A WW2 bomber pilot for the RCAF. When I was a boy he taught me this poem so I could recite it for a Remembrance Day ceremony. He knew it by heart. It was special to him and it will always be special to me.
I'm so sorry for your loss. 😓
@@romanov7000 I appreciate that, thank you for posting this poem.
I have had the privilege of seeing every view in this video with my own eyes. First, a kid sitting on his mom's lap in the Cessna while dad flew, then as the kid building models of every fighter from WW II and all of the 'teen' fighters of the 20th Century, then as a 20-something commercial-pilot-in-training then as a young 2nd lieutenant in UPT - straight up, down, through the 'cloud canyons' at 500 knots, inverted over a buddy, canopy-to-canopy. I read this poem at a young age and it was one of many things that inspired me. I always wonder if John Magee knew how far his words would reach? I am proud to know that we shared the same skies.
… and a quick shout-out to Richard Bach - another great aviator and literary inspiration. If you want to read a work written solely about the joy of flight, read Jonathan Livingston Seagull - or if you have a quick hour or so, listen to the UA-cam condensed, narrated version with Richard Harris at the helm.

"On Memorial Day, I don't want to only remember the combatants. There were also those who came out of the trenches as writers and poets, who started preaching peace, men and women who have made this world a kinder place to live. "

Great poem but I don't like the voice.🥴
He’s buried near my home, he crashed during a training flight over Lincolnshire 💛
