Thanks to your quiz /survey, I let my son try. He was struggling. Thanks to your work my son is saved. He is 9+ now and he's very grateful his "brain has changed". But it was a rough ride because it was me against the world when I went on my crusade. I had a small window of opportunity last year and I acted against all odds even if I was accused as being "the problem".
You are correct, there's no support or awareness. I am in Malaysia. There's no channel to get help, every authority I went to said they don't have the mandate.
My son is so happy, thriving at school and friends and our relationship is so beautiful now. I see him a few times a month
When he comes back for vacation I will show him this video. He will feel very very proud of himself. He is a champion of his life, he doesn't yet know how brave and strong he is to be able to arrive at recovery and thriving.

This channel needs so much more attention. Your videos, community, and 9 month challenge changed my life and helped to break me free of my addiction. My life is in such a better place and I now have my first child on the way. I now have these resources to keep myself in check and make sure my little one stays safe from the psychological warfare many of these games wage on our minds. Thanks Cam!

I am currently playing a game with "energy" that refills every 2 hours. This is good in a way because it keeps me less engaged. 5-10 min in the morning and 5-10 at evening. However, I felt I was playing too little and the past few days I was searching like crazy for an additional game to keep me entertained.
All this process made me realize I don't actually need to add another game to my life. I need to do other activities that I like but barely find time for: exercising, reading. Watching these people's stories confirms more gaming is not the right idea and my gaming should be less. There are other more important things to prioritize.

I can finally end this subscription here on this channel. I looked into my Steam account today and was so happy that my last game I played was 8 weeks ago. I briefly had a relapse for one day in those 8 weeks where I played Football Manager and after that I felt so bad that I deleted the game again. I've now started university and have met new people at college and in the city. I do sports regularly and have been to cool parties. Believe me, real life is so much better than just pressing buttons. I am aware that I still have a long way to go and that I need to keep improving. As long as I keep my life exciting, I have no urge to play games. Reading and listening to podcasts are a good alternative. Unfortunately, I've also noticed that UA-cam and streaming services have enormous addictive potential. Take care and good luck

My console gaming days are behind me. I was addicted to TERA for five years. I played that game day and night. One day, I just decided I was done and quit the game. I deleted Genshin Impact from my PS4, and every other game I had, only using the console to watch movies or series.

  • @Brokenhill42

As with many behavioral issues/addictions, so often it starts in the home with parents. Parents providing various limitations to excess indulgence in a child's desires coupled with engaging with them on a personal level goes a long way for their general health. But we have too many parents that are too busy, lazy, or in some way ignorant to their child's needs and fail to guide them in a rigid enough environment. Kids need to be bored some times....they need to use their imagination and create, as opposed to being spoon fed entertainment/snacks constantly.
I grew up from age 5 with a game console and TV in my room in the 90s. I definitely had my periods of stronger addictions (mainly in summers of middle/high school due to lack of social connections) but thankfully I don't think they ever got too extreme. There was even a year or so when video games just didn't sound that fun anymore and I stopped playing for a while (post-college). But even as an adult there are brief periods that pop up where I'm playing a lot and get addicted to a game).
I think the recurring waves of interest/brief addiction are most likely because I had a lot of access to games from an early age all throughout my childhood. And I was never forced to join a social club or to build some kind of skills.
I do plan on allowing my kids to play games, but under a much more controlled environment. So far my thoughts are:
-They can start at age 6 (I have a 3 and 5 yr old now)
-Never will they have a TV in their room (and probably not even a handheld console)
-Game times will be limited heavily (maybe 4-7hrs a week) and there may be specific windows of opportunity
-They will have to work for/earn their gaming time somehow

Lol, if you realy think this kid was healthy you are totally wrong. Yeah, all bad parents descibe themselfes as loving and their childs as happy and can think about anything is missing in their life. But this is one hundred percent false. This kid was definitly traumatized. I don't know how, if it was abused or what ever. But with all my experience and self develpment I can clearly state that his game addiction wasn't the problem but a sympthom. I would argue his parents were extremly controlling and monitoring him, breaking his will at any time and telling him all day and night how to behave. And games were his retreat where he can be hisself of some kind. And by forbidding him to play they made it worse because this tiny space which is some kind of controlled by him became smaller and smaller while restrictions und pressure increased. But this is only a guess. Maybe they were perfect parents, made nothing wrong, school was awesome and he was just an ungrateful brat with no reason who decided to suicide just to punish his innocent parents even more.

What also disturbes me is this instagram like showing of how amazing life is after quitting games. This is just not true. Quitting games might be important and usefull but if you don't attack you deeper problems the likelihood of getting a great life is very low. I would realy like to see an serious statistic about people who swapped from game addiction to substances. That's why I would argue that for a lot of people it might be better to be game addicted then stopping it, because this addiction serves a very important purpose in their life and if they don't overcome the need for this purpose they might tap into even bigger problemes. I would rather play 12 hours a day video games then smoking weed all day. And if your problems are caused by some real life obligations or bonds you can't easily get rid of you have a substantial problem and gaming is your retreat. You should identify the deeper layers of the problem and try to attack the root. And maybe it is a matter of time when you are old enough or have enough money to move away from the place where you need to get numb. And then the real healing can begin. But it is all individual, no general advice will save you.

Too freaking true, this was my case, but it also kept me trapped at the same time. Hated my family life and played to escape it, and it worked amazing. Problem is, it also kept me from leaving the nest. I only was able to begin to break out once my folks allowed me to live on my own in one of their rentals (im privileged, I know) aka I broke into the place and lived there for a few months before I got busted and almost got "fired" from my family. Fortunately they let me stay there and only then was I able to get my shit together which was a slow process and took years and therapy, quitting gaming came much much later. Obviously most people don't have that luxury and while living at my folks place I was in absolutely no mental state to save money and find my own place since any money I would have earned would be transferred into rent/food. Also I had no friends since it was wake up > school > home > game > sleep and repeat.
Now, my oldest uncle, my dads oldest brother was in a similar situation (cycle of hate am I right?) except that was in the 60's so there were no games, so what he did was always stay at school or his friends place, basically his friends parents became his surrogate parents and worked on weekends to save up enough money that when he turned 18 went over to England for no other reason than he liked the Beetles and hoped he'd find his way there. It worked out for him but I promise you, if gaming was in his picture, he, like me, wouldn't have any friends, no job and probably still been living at his folks house miserably. I can't tell anyone to not game especially if they are in the shit and it keeps you from killing yourself, but just know that gaming will make your life harder, even when you feel like you need it the most.

Most of the gamers commenting here are online multiplayer players who lose themselves in life playing these highly addictive games that don't lead anywhere or resolve the loneliness that many feel, which is precisely why multiplayer games dominate, right? at least for many people, it is an empty multiplayer game experience, but it is much more addictive because it involves more challenge and more interaction, but in terms of experience and appreciation of the game, which is also art, there is none.

When we are powerless, we start identifying with what we want. "I want, what I want". That is identity though; the collection of repeated behaviour. Repeated behaviour is habitual, not a rational sum-up of our own ideals and wants. So we, in many cases, do not actually want what we want. But we defend our way of life because we have not stepped back and actually reasoned and thought through what we do want, and how to overcome habitual/sensory habits.
