anything that makes you release dopamine could be addictive, video games are easy to get to and release a lot of dopamine, so it tends to be a easy choice.
finishing a tough job also releases a lot of dopamine, and some people get addicted to that, but working tends to be a lot tougher than playing games, and is therefore not the most obvious choice ;P

No, unfortunately you are very wrong. Some substances are more potent and more immersive than other like video games, tv, UA-cam than lower on the spectrum would be books, comics, chess

Gaming can also sprout new addictions.
I know several people in RuneScape, Alcoholics, Stoners, all type of drug addicts, etc, litteraly most clan chats are full of people talking about drugs, NOTHING ELSE.
it's honestly so depressing to look at, that's what made me quit gaming, I'm gonna focus on school, I wanna be an engineer and build stuff in the future.

No offense man, but you are grasping at straws here. There is no correlation between being an alcoholic or drug user from playing video games. I am an engineer, and guess what! I still play video games.

As the phrases go "all sunshine and no rain make a desert" and "all work and no play make Jack a dull boy". I recall my boys gave me a 3ds as a Xmas present, I said to them "all I want from you is good grades, not this", they replied "we r just trying to help you pa". I hope I'm less lame now.

This was an excellent story that really touched home. I played them for years but I grew out of them. I look at those kids doing the e-sports and while it's great to have a new sport out there to choose from, it's sad to see the bastardization of gaming. Communication, people skills and self development become impacted and like the brother in this story, gaming is entertainment but it's also distraction that can lead to missed opportunities to develop mentally.

After a good 2-3 hours of gaming my eyes and my head start to hurt and I know I have to turn it off. I used to be almost addicted over 15 years ago but then I started another hobby: listening to music. I still enjoy videogames a lot but I can easily differ reality from virtual.

Actually, we don't talk about it because we know for a fact that everything can be addictive if you are feeling engaged into it that you are too lazy to do other activities. Not stereotyping or anything but from what I've seen, people these days hate video games for the most braindead reason I've ever seen and they blame violence such as shooting, murder, etc., On video games, when the truth is, it's not. Plus, we all know back then, a lot of people blame violence on Sci-Fi books or comics without any understandable reason.

Almost never, I believe you eventually get to an age where the real world is more interesting... A lot of things contributed to me feeling this; Pscadelics, sex, getting over anxiety, and social improvement; these thigns are some of the cures to video game addiction, or maybe, addiction to video games is the lack of things like this.

I think harvesting a passion in real life is the opposite of harvesting a passion for a video game. Let me explain: (I've been addicted to many things in my life, like drugs, gambling, video games, and the simple process of learning. - So everything below is my point of view according my own experience)
So let's say you start to learn, for example, guitar
At the beginning it will be boring, you will have to force yourself to play, your fingers will hurt, you will want to give-up because it seems too hard or complicated , and you barely see any progress. But the more you do it, the more you enjoy it. It becomes easier, and fulfilling. After a few years, you become better, and you get even more pleasure from it. And by playing at parties, or going out and play in a park, by the lake, the beach, you start to meet and make new friends (it's crazy how people will talk way more easily to you if you are doing something artistic outside). You will share your music with them, and people around you will enjoy you and what you do. At the end: You are happier, and this specific happiness will be available at any time, and growing on the long term.
Now let's say you start a new video game: (Or a new drug, haha)
At the beginning it will be really exciting, you will feel like forced to play, your fingers will hurry you to get back on your keyboard, you will want to discover this new world, and if there are some challenges, it's even better. But the more you play it, the more it loses its magic, it becomes a routine. After a long period, it feels like you didn't achieve anything or progressed a lot compared to the first few weeks/months in that game. You realize didn't really made long term/fulfilling relationships, you didn't really share anything, you mainly did it for yourself, and don't feel accomplished. Even people around you are sad to see you like that, or even annoyed, and you feel it. At the end: You feel a bit sad and lonelier, and if you stay stuck longer in that game, this feeling will grow.
That's how I felt after playing various games Like: Runescape: 5 Years / League of legends: 3 Years / And many other games here and there. (sometime 18 hours a day, or even more if I didn't sleep)
And also playing guitar for 8 years (I'm only getting more pleasure by playing more, that's crazy), juggling for 3 years, (same here), skateboarding for 10 years (it hurts, but feels so good to learn new tricks), painting, dancing ...
Of course I still play video games from time to time, but in a really healthier way.
If you want to see what I've learned in term of passion over the last few years, when I was not playing video games, you can check my UA-cam Channel, I made a few video, maybe it will inspire you.
    Cheers my friends!

My 8 year old is going through withdrawal. Last year we stopped letting him play because he would get violent, irratted and just mean. This year being home all the time from covid kinda relaxed game times. I go to work, he plays 10hrs / day. I get home tell him to turn it off for a break. He talks about killing himself and actually briefly ran away. So games are cut off again. Sucks, because I like to play about a hour a week of games myself.

This channel is incredibly fascinating and the comments are compelling, especially when I cross examine myaddiction with the thoughts people have in the comments. I was addicted to heroin and fentanyl for Years, opiates/ other drugs were an escape . They were my “tool” used to cope with life and multiple traumatic events and situations I wasn’t equipped to deal with. They were also my social circle, and the constant ripping and running around made me feel like I was accomplishing a lot, in reality it was distracting me from reality. I’m 25 now, I was addicted for 7ish years. Ill share my biggest insights. Addiction is NOT about the activities/ substances. It’s the individual’s relationship with them. I would detox and gain 90 days or more just to head right back to the trap house, KNOWING this is going to lead to me being in excruciating pain and sickness. I did it anyways because even though I had abstained, I wasn’t DEALING with the things that caused me to look at heroin as a solution to begin with. It took me multiple relapses and very humbling experiences to finally accept and believe the problem wasn’t the drug. It was my lack of coping mechanisms and my brain’s inability to moderate my intake of this substance. As an addict, I liked to make excuses though, and that’s why I avoided reality for so long. Acceptance meant I had to deal with these issues and begin to put in the work required to change. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results. And my experience with addiction was such that I would CHOOSE insanity and SELF deceit.. today my life is very different. I still have plenty of issues and things I’m working through, but taking responsibility for my mental health, my situation, and my life-and not continuing to blame my behavior /drug use on my trauma - is what SAVED me and my life.. to those struggling with an active addiction, and those who have clean time, y’all are fucking amazing. Idc what the addiction is, we are some of the strongest people alive. You deserve freedom, and the ability to wake up every day and make decisions based on what’s best for YOU. Bc we are all worthy of great love. Stay safe 🖤

I feel like they are confusing e-sports with gaming addiction. When I watched e-sports, it was awesome! I think similar if not better than watching a normal sport, you're just excited for the night's battle or what ever. But at the end of the day, you go to sleep just fine, it's like ESPN, not so much an addiction. On the other hand, actually playing the game, being totally immersed, that's where it's hard to sleep sometimes or go to work/school the next day. I think e-sports is awesome but personally immersing yourself in the game is where a problem can really develop. When I watched sc2 e-sports, i wasn't really interested in trying to be a pro sc2 player, i just really enjoyed the esport rather than play the game sun up to sun down myself. If I had a chance to go to the live tournament, well that's real, a true sociable environment, the real world, what is wrong with that even if there are costumes involved at times? Everyone's having fun. It's not the same as being in a room yourself in your own video game world totally immersed all by yourself.

@@Arceus948 how? Simple. Diversity of content. TV addiction has the same problem. But UA-cam is far worse, because you can jump at will to some other kind of content. Do you get it? You can overcome game addiction just because you get tired of the game you are addicted to. This happens with games and with everything actually. Oh yeah, and the fact that UA-cam is free. It is like game addiction is being addicted to weed, and UA-cam addiction is being addicted to drugs. When you start getting tired of weed, you go with cocaine, get tired of cocaine, go with heroine, get tired, go with weed, etc.
If you want to overcome addiction, you have to understand why you have that addiction and find something else to do. UA-cam addiction usually have somehing to do with shitty people the person has to deal with, depression, lack of opportunities for good conversations, etc. Maybe it is not your case. Probably it is. Good luck.

I was addicted with video games since my youngest age, but manage to maintain a work, exercices, social lifes, girlfriends, and descent amount of sleep . So none of the symptomes they are talking about was happening. ...Until my first kid born and that's when shit started to hit the fan.
Stopped go outsided with friends, no more gym, and if i wanted to still play, i had to sleep less and less (and the baby was crying during the night).
The symptomes appeared immediatly, always irritated, no energy at all, didn't want to do anything but gaming. I was depressed as fuck and a terrible person to live with.
I was even yelling at my baby for stupid reasons. Sometimes didn't have enough energy to stay up in transport.
I realised that it was an habit for me to go to the computer when i was bored. I was just playing game without passion.
Last month i stopped gaming, without even trying, i just removed all the videogames video from my youtube page and replaces them with bodyweight training and motivation video (Joe Rogan is very good). I started play guitare again and organize things for my wife and my kids.
It's been a month now that i'm going 3 time a week to the gym to do some 20 minutes HIIT. I'm so tired at the end of the day and i sleep so well i can wake up everymorning around 6:30. I no longer play video games or twitching or look at stupid things on social media until 1am.
I feel better now. I don't think that going cold turkey is the best way to go. I can still play a little bit of game sometimes, but i'm very disciplined and my session are very organized (1h max long).
To sum it up, you can still play video games if you are disciplined and if you are priotizing the following things in order : Sleep, Healthy Food ,Family, Exercice, Social interaction, Gaming..
I don't know why i wrote all of this. Hope it will help some of you.

Thanks for sharing I also had the same experience and I'm glad I'm not alone. ADDICTION is complicated. When it comes to explaining addiction to those who haven’t experienced it first-hand, many people still look at it as nothing more than a lack of willpower. The fact is, people don’t choose addiction. It's true, even myself I have to admit I got ADDICTED with a Chinese mobile game for TWO years!! First few months I was able to managed it, I played out of boredom (very unproductive). Made a friend in the game and unfortunately we got competitive til I can no longer discipline and control myself. One day we were just like, " Oh hey why don't we make few accounts?" Til we ended up making 25 for two years!! then worst I ended up spending money upgrading my main.. smh crazy! Instead of sleeping I'm all awake playing the entire night, it even affected my work it led to tardiness and i couldn't focus anymore. It's like being zombie at work.. i know it's so freakin stupid right?!
I stopped meeting friends in real life, missed some big family gatherings and worst even work. Anyway after playing since 2017 i got all the signs and symptoms of depression my family was very worried. Then I got constant migraine, it was so so so bad like legit everyday even my eye sight deteriorated. So last January i decided to give access of my main account to a friend then took a rest for a week. Honestly it was hard at first, like an addict I got pretty bad withdrawals. Thankfully for a couple of weeks without the game I felt well and I'd say I think I finally got my SANITY back I appreciated the real world. I decided to help myself so I deleted and uninstalled the game! Hallelujah! Took me two years for my realization!!! Oh guess what..did I sell the account? NO I didn't, I gave it to a friend. Haters gonna say "oh you're dumb biss what a waste!!" but I guess it was my way of punishing myself, a closure to end the chapter of my insanity. Actually It's not just the money but its the TIME I wasted..that was my biggest regret. I know most people will be judgmental and will say, "Biss your fault!! IF only you weren't stupid and tried to discipline/control yourself. Unfortunately for me I can't defend myself, it wasn't easy i just felt stuck and trapped in a deep hole I can't get out. I actually missed the warning signs, the red flag of addiction and depression. I know I made friends in the game and it was sad to say goodbye after two years. But I realized we have common denominator and that's "DEPRESSION", different stories but the game was used to escape the negative emotion in real life. It's either the Addiction put ourselves at risk for depression or it's the depression that leads to behaviors that resulted to the addiction. It's so complicated there is no denying that. The fact is, people don’t choose addiction and depression. Before you can even begin to hope that you can explain the complexities, it’s important that you understand it yourself. The decision to try and get help for yourself or someone you care about who has an addiction and depression is never easy but with your support, they have a greater chance of overcoming this issue. Each situation is unique, but there are some general guidelines that will help. This people don't need criticism they need support. I know I can't have my two years back but at least I was able to overcome it and I'm proud I did.

I love gaming but recent years made me limit how much. I have my days where I play for like 5 hours but i had to stop to get my life in track before I rewarded myself with gaming. I cope with my addiction by treating it like a reward so if I didn't do shit I don't play. Keeps me productive but like I said I still have days where I get lost in immersion. I've had a great life tho. I just wasn't popular in school so games took in where parties didn't. I also have good friends and all. Gaming just came in at a time where I needed em. I am glad to say tho I am not as bad as I used to be. Got a college degree. Great girlfriend and my own place. Two years ago was completely different. Just gaming.

    some friends to play online).
When young, my "why" was just to have fun. But eventually, gaming lead me to live without purpose... feeling that playing, was the most that I could get from life. Right now thanks God I have purpose. I'm and still playing, but it's a secondary task; doesn't compromise my real life.

All addictions become problems when lifestyle choices, circumstances, lack of discipline etc. are all factors. TV, Movies, board games, habits, sports, exercise, eating, drinking, smoking, talking (almost anything) can become an addiction. Not everyone loses control, but some do and become slaves to their addiction. Bad parenting can allow children to become so self-centered and undisciplined, they become a victim of addiction. Choice is always a factor and the addict has to want to change if they reach a state of addiction that is seriously unhealthy for themselves and others.

One more comment to gamers to help them in time management. I’m not an expert but in my quest to defy and understand gaming to step off the ship, I learned a massive amount.
How to moderate gaming and short the 16 hours a day.
Take my steps read them all before deciding if you need to be skeptical ASAP.
You need a day activity that takes a good chunk of your day, this is for gaming to not be a priority and it’s a perfect step to make gaming even more fun but no have total control.
Listen to Batman, Bdobbins i think ir another streamer. They on here tell you, 1-3 hours your brain is fresh, 3-5 your measurement change and you see that you are failing, needing to keep going to have a good match to make you think different and feel it was worth it, problem is you’ll find that match and actually think it’s worth it, and time management fails here. 5-9 you noticed the game failing you, and that’s why you go down, teammates aren’t putting in the work; it’s their fault. You may even raise your voice, if you’re calm, scream if you aren’t the calm gamer (I never threw a controller).
Watch your self go through these stages and decide to fit 1-3 and make it really fun everyday. Do yourself a pro favor and use the training at the beginning to warm up. After 3 hours if you had a good game, hit power and turn off!! This will end your session on a positive note, ultimately, after a bad game, turn it off, use autopilot if to can’t do it on your own, or talk to yourself and remind yourself why you are doing it, what you are trying to, and what it gaming is like when you actually do the 1-3. Set a timer! If yo can’t moderate it (like me) quit cold turkey. Throw your HDMI away and take a picture of the system, put it in your closet and immediately put it up on Facebook marketplace.

Untill recently I have quit gaming. ( 3 months now) And life has been so much better. I go to the Gym, I travel, spend time with my girlfriend. Games are just pixels and I asked myself whats the point, of reaching a level in a game? What kind of bennefit can I get from that in real life? The answere is nothing. The only thing your doing is sitting behind a screen all day, and if you wanna look back at your life when ur 50, what you have accomplished in ur life, do you wanna say you : ‘traveled alot, hanged out with friends, done jobs where you are truthly passionate about, got kids and a beautiful wife‘ or: yhea i’ve reached max lvl on wow, got highest rank on cs go global elite, higest rank on rainbowsix siege and spend thousands of dollars/euros on games and gaming’? For me, an enthusiastic gamer especially survival game, he will try to play the game (mostly) from the medium or normal level not from the easiest level. where in the normal mode the difficulty level will increase from the easy level and will increase the level of stress and curiosity to pass or complete the game at that level and continue to a higher level. for example devil may cry (dante) game in this game level and difficulty level is broken into many (maybe even up to a level that for me is very difficult to play (enemy 1 hit player dies)) the problem is not the difficulty level of the game or try to keep challenging or completing the game (because enthusiastic game players not only make the level a challenge but sometimes the short completion time of the game is often used as a benchmark), the real problem is when the game produces stress and curiosity to solve it. become addicted. just like shooting games for example PUBG games, an enthusiastic player will make how many kill your opponent as a benchmark (mostly) or when using inefficient weapons as a mainstay weapon and able to survive in the game. another example is the game DOTA, how a player uses heroes from various types of heroes based on strength, agility, intelligence. his curiosity arises from when the player completes each of the hero items but does not use core items instead speculates with other items that might support that hero. in the world of games many cause curiosity, anger, stress when they fail to finish the game or when friends in the team make mistakes. this feeling is the main problem that makes a game player become a game addict.

Dont neglect my job as db architect or my physical activity, feel better at problem solving. I suppose its bad when you neglect the rest of your life, for me its been nothing but great.

I am trying to quit games to focus 100% of my time to my job and self improvement. My job is not related to video games though so every time I game is a waste of time.
One question, if your professional career is in gaming industry or gaming development as seen in the video, does it still make games a waste of time?

    • @GameQuitters
      @GameQuitters  8 років тому +1

Depends if you're talking about gaming recreationally or as part of your job. But I also don't believe all gaming is a waste of time. I don't agree it's all productive either.

    • @rempanda
      @rempanda 6 років тому

I don't think video games are entirely a waste of time. I mean, if you're at the level of addiction of the twins then I believe that can be very harmful, at the end we heard Alex talking about how it's even hindered his social skills and what most people learn as kids and teens, he was having to learn that in adulthood.
However, I love gaming. I'm a full time student currently studying for my masters but I still play video games fairly regularly. As someone with severe mental health issues, gaming can sometimes just help me escape for a while. It's also introduced me to a large online community. I know it's not the same but for someone who struggles with any social interaction, making new friends has been amazing. I've never let it get to the addiction stage though, I'm doing well at university and sometimes I recognise that I need to take a couple of weeks off to work on my therapy or to focus more on my studies.
I think my main vice is reading, which may sound like a good thing but I've legit cancelled on social events just so that I could stay in and finish a book... I think any hobby can be healthy as long as you don't get to the point where it interferes with your work/education or social life.

I found something in this video that I didn’t find very agreeable, the statement is basically saying all videogames start out fun and end boring or in other words fun to unfilling. Now compare this to a game like dark souls a game known for having a very big skill curve so taking from what is said this game was hard/boring to unfilling. Clearly that would not be the case for a game like dark souls and many other games.Overall addiction varys between games, to target games as a whole for addiction is other main stream trends to blame the nasty habits of gamers if you agree with me like this comment and let’s stop bull💩
