@@abp1400 I might be wrong, but it seems Belgians really value modesty in their champions. Eveonpoel (butchered spelling irony is dripping). Has heaps of potential but hasn’t won much.
He is petulant when things don’t go well, see Giro performance, not much of a team player ie world champs, vocal about things after the fact worlds again, and has been making self promoting gestures on his wins since the junior world titles.
Sure he has a great amount of potential but he hasn’t won much yet and there’s a fair bit of behaviour that suggests he has some growing up to do.
I’m not judging him by the way, if I had achieved that success by the same age no doubt I’d be a wanker too. I’m sure he will grow up, but for now, he’s a wanker and lantern, is too in love with him to see the red flags.

Remco will dominate for years to come, he's still a young man of 22 plenty of time for life to slap some humility into him, like it does with all of us. Unbelievable talent must be difficult to be humble when your body can do the things Remco has been doing in cycling for over 3 years at the elite, world level.

I dont think he can win La Vuelta, personally. He is an amazing rider, one of this best I've ever seen at this kind of races. He'll probably dominate Amstel Gold race as well one day. But as for as pure climbing goes; he has never showed he can compete at HC-level climbs. In fact, he has tried it and we've seen him fall short multiple times. That is not to say that he can't learn, or that I'm trying to doubt the kid. He is amazing. I just don't think Grand Tours are his speciality, especially not at this moment in his career.
And if competing at Grand Tours means that he should adjust his training and lose weight/muscle-mass and for certain sacrifice these kind of performances just to have a shot at maybe competing for a GC in a Grand Tour, then I would never even want to try Grand Tours if I were Remco.

Also, remember what happened when Usain Bolt arrived and took the 100m WR -- with a lanky, unripped physique. This was completely the oppositie of the current trend and people thought that it would not be possible. Although Remco projects overconfidence he could go on to become a multiple winner of the Tour, but that will depend on his biochemistry and genetics - in the GT the amount of repair work your body can do overnight is key. By for day races, he is usually a level above his main competitors, and he's just 22.

I agree that a professional’s ability to accurately recall their match afterwards is impressive. Check out a chess professional’s post win interview. They recall the entire game - every move of theirs and their opponent’s - from memory. What’s really wild is that they also explain mid-match hypothetical scenarios entailing whole sequences of moves that didn’t actually happen in the match, but would have if a single different move was made. It’s absolutely incredible.

The problem was (is) that Remco always was a footy player, not a bike racer, most of them start cycling at young age, he started much much later, his body needs time to adapt to a different type of recovery, but there's no doubt it will, he's 22 for crying out loud, most 22 yr olds are just coming onto the scene, he already won more than most of the peleton can dream of.

50k of ITT will give him a lot of time on the pure climbers.
He will have a strong team.
    He is Remco.
    Uncertains:
We don't know how he deals with high altitude. Highest finish is at 2450 meter above sea level. This can be both good and bad for him.
    Cons:
    Primoz Roglic

The thing about the altitude climb, yes it is an unknown, but at the same time that climb seems perfect for him in terms % after the first steep km's. So will be really interesting. Except for that climbing at altitude, I only really see one stage where I think it might be dangerous for him and only due to the finishing climb, namely Praeres, incredibly steep for 4 km's (13% average 😰)
So that stage, the possible altitude problems and his consistency is what I think could be a problem, if he can survive those, he has a really big shot I'd say.

Can he win the vuelta? Before today I'd have said not very likely, top 5 would already be great. Looking better at the profile now and wit the (possible) drop out this has changed.
imo he'll need to survive/show 3 things to win.
    1) he needs to survive the Praeres finish, 4km at 13% average is a crazy steep climb and should not suite him at all. He'll need to really limit timelosses here.
    2) he'll need to be good enough at altitude, at this moment there isn't really any trustworthy evidence either way.
    3) he needs to be consistent enough and in case of a bad day limit his losses enough (which I think he can, most times he dropped in the past he limited his losses).
So yes, he could but it will not be easy.
And ofcourse if Roglic participates in his normal form, it will be pretty impossible imo. Roglic is great at time trials too, thus he'll not take time there and Roglic is definitely still the better climber at this moment, unless somehow Remco can climb like at Norway for 3 weeks, which is unlikely.
Could definitely be a fight for white though, with Almeida and McNulty both also possibly in the running for it.

    • @bjornvandenbremt1717

Roglic who??? The only reason Roglic has won a grand tour is because of the weak competition and his team doing most if the wirk for him. Roglic couldn't even wear WVA's jock strap at this point.
I absolutely hate him, not a team player, never does something for a team mate. What did he do in the TDF this year to help WVA or Vingegaard? Absolutely nothing! Couldn't keep up with the rest of his team, even before his crash. He's done, period.

    • @MDP1702
      @MDP1702 2 роки тому +1

@@bjornvandenbremt1717 What a bullshit statement. We know from the numbers that at this moment there are only three consistent top climbers: Vingegaard, Pogacar and Roglic. Everyone else either is under them or much more inconsistent in their performances. Roglic both is still one of the 3 best climbers currently and the best time trialist (on the flat) from all real GT contenders, only of Evenepoel were to suddenly become a GT contender too, he might be better than Roglic in the TT's.
Roglic is definitely a team player, has shown that repeatedly and this is also repeatedly indicated by the people who actually know him. There just is currently a wrong impression of him being spun out there. This is not too dissimilar from Evenepoel, who also is a team player when you look at all his races and what people that know him say about him, yet there is the lingering story that he isn't a good teammate. Both essentially have the same problems: they are leaders who don't often get the chance to show they are team players, since the team works for them or if that is not the case that usually has a reason, like them being out of shape or having an injury.
What did Roglic do in the TdF this year? I don't know, maybe riding around with broken vertebraes, knowing his chances for GC are gone and still remaining to help the team if can, potentially jeopardising his Vuelta where he'd be sole leader and a chance to break a record. Injured as he was he helped put pressure on Pogacar on the Galibier, without him Pogacar could have just sat in the wheel of Vingegaard that entire climb, possibly not breaking like he did on the Granon and losing a lot less time.
Before the crash he was as fast as Vingegaard in the TT, despite taking the corners more cautiously and thus slower, meaning he was faster on the straight sections than him. And in the Calais final climb he lost his position in the village and had to make up a lot of distance, he made all other riders look like they were standing still when he passed them. He clearly did a great effort then, just payed the price for a bit later on that small climb it seems, though still very close to Vingegaard who also was at his limit.

@@MDP1702 you clearly don't have a clue what you're saying. Roglic did absolutely nothing in the TDF before his crash. Look at what WVA did. He solely is responsible for winning his green jersey, but he also waited several times for Roglic and Vingegaard to get them back or keep the time loss at a minimum. Even when he wad in the yellow jersey he did this. Also wasn't to lazy to go get some water bottles for the rest of the team. That's a team player. Roglic is anytime but that. Never ever has! Where was he in Milan - San Remo when Mohiric left on the Poggio? He should've helped his team leader, WVA!
Roglic one of the 3 best climbers? Give me a break, WVA had to pull back or he would have killed Roglic in the mountains. Look at what he did to Pogacar. There are far better climbers than Roglic at this moment. Kuss, Thomas, Goudu among others.
And Evenepoel is a team player, but for his team of Quick Step. But he wasn't a team player during the last world championship in Belgium. He helped Alaphillipe, but left WVA on his own. That's why a lot of Belgians hated him and said he wasn't a team player.

*you clearly don't have a clue what you're saying.*
And you clearly have no idea of what cycling entails or didn't watch the tour if you are saying Roglic did nothing and didn't act as a teamplayer.
*but he also waited several times for Roglic and Vingegaard to get them back or keep the time loss at a minimum.*
I can't remember a single time where VA waited for Roglic before his fall and afterwards only after the Galibier, where Roglic's GC was essentially already over and VA had nothing else to do.
*Even when he wad in the yellow jersey he did this.*
Because this is what he's meant to do? If he doesn't do it, he doesn't go to the TdF, as simple as that. This while Roglic went as leader and didn't need to work for anyone else untill he wasn't a GC contender anymore, at which point he already was to injured to do much, except for what he did on the Galibier where he seems to have wasted his last decent shape and possibly made his injury even worse, risking his vuelta participation.
You clearly need to learn the difference between a domestique and a (GC) leader. Clearly you don't know this (which means you don't know much about cycling) or you don't want to understand this because it doesn't fit with your narrative.
*Where was he in Milan - San Remo when Mohiric left on the Poggio?*
Not good enough. Roglic has never been good at long one day races and on the Poggio he was out of position, wasting a lot of energy just getting back to the front. After that he just wasn't strong enough to help Wout. If he was good enough he'd either have helped Wout or went for himself.
*Roglic one of the 3 best climbers? Give me a break, WVA had to pull back or he would have killed Roglic in the mountains.*
What a goddamn ignorant statement. Everyone with a little knowledge of current cycling knows Roglic is one of the best climbers currently and WVA isn't even close to his climbing level, never having pushed the W/kg that Roglic regularly does. Don't believe me, ask anyone else with a little proper knowledge of cycling and any professional analyst.
      *Kuss, Thomas, Goudu among others.*
Literally none of these are considered better climbers than Roglic at the moment, not even close. Can you tell me any race where either of these did better than a non-injured Roglic in the last 2,5 years?
*But he wasn't a team player during the last world championship in Belgium.*
Yeah, because pulling for 25-30km full when asked by Wout, losing any chances he himself might still have had, isn't a team effort. What a joke. Do you have any good insight in cycling, or are you just parroting things you hear others say?
*He helped Alaphillipe, but left WVA on his own.*
How the hell did he help Alaphilippe there by doing something he wasn't ordered to do by the Belgium team/Wout? If anyone helped Alaphillipe it was WVA with bad tactical decision that played in the cards of Alaphilippe and against his own. And before you think I just like to bash on WVA, I've been his fan since the first year he started riding in CX with the pro's.
*That's why a lot of Belgians hated him and said he wasn't a team player.*
They said that because we didn't win and they sought a scapegoat and as it happened Remco already get criticized a shitton even before the worlds, unjustly I would add.
The fact of the matter is that WVA made bad tactical decisions there and was just too weak that day. Was Remco flawless that day? No, he shouldn't have been pulling in that first break he was ordered to follow. But for the rest he did exactly what you should expect him to do in a proper tactical plan: be in a break from around 90km to go, allowing the Belgians to sit back in the peloton and let oher teams ride (they didn't do this, stupid from them) and then he followed orders of his leader (WVA), who asked him to go full on the front then and never rescinded that order so Remco rode untill he was completely done. WVA confirmed later he gave that order (and even if he hadn't, he never went to Remco to tell him to stop, so clearly he didn't mind what Remco was doing). Morover after this when he was done Remco got a thumbsup from the Belgian coach when passing that car. Unlikely that this would have happened it Remco hadn't operated as a teamplayer in their eyes that day.
